CLUB BUSINESS

 

  • Bobby: collecting glasses for Rotary program
    • Victor Ghirra back to school event on Tuesday (August 18th) from 4-7pm, set up from 3-4, looking for volunteers
  • Amanda: Proposal for funding for fires in the interior ($15,000)
  • Debbie M: Honorary membership for 2026-27 Chris Brodie, Brian Kirkham, Bob Shoker, Dick Wagner, and new inductee Harvey Kooner
    • Lily has resigned her membership
  • Susan: Go onto clubrunner to ensure that all personal information is accurate
  • Micheal: Next evening social meeting is on August 27th at Country Vines (Mexican)

Maddie Pughe, Classification

  • Maddie is an aquarius, the “most shy talkative awkward outgoing social antisocial person you will ever meet”
  • Maddie grew up in Richmond and graduated from McMath, and after graduating from U Vic in 2020 now works as a Senior Financial Services Representative at Vancity Credit Union after a stint managing Little Mexico Cantina in Steveston for 3 years
    • She enjoys the fraud and security realm of the financial industry
  • Went to RYLA in 2013, and from 2014-2020 was on the leadership committee, organizing RYLA for District 5040 with 20 other committee members
  • In her free time, she likes “going where the wind pushes [her]”: spending time with her friends, her dog, going to see live music, and being out in nature or at her cabin
    • Her friends often joke that she’s the grandma of the group, spending time alone, going to bed at 9pm, reading, and doing her “grandma crafts”
  • Maddie joined our Rotary club because she is the lead on her branch’s grant group, which recently gave $2500 to the McVitty fund which provides emergency veterinary care for low income and unhoused people
    • Any organization can email Vancity for funding, and Maddie decides on a quarterly basis which organization gets funding from their branch

 

 

 
SERGEANT At Arms Tidbits
 

Sergeant at Arms (and favourite movie)

  • Debbie T: Oliver! Way too much has been going on, and she is running for trustee again with the press release coming out yesterday with the group “Empower Education Richmond”
  • Bobby: Rocky. Hosted a board meeting on Tuesday (or perhaps Monday, according to several other members). Recollection foggy since he was cleaning up through Tuesday. Will be away next week seeing his daughter in Toronto.
  • Sandra: Moonstruck. Got a gift at Christmas to fly up to Whistler, would recommend – got dropped off at the Canada Line with her bike and then came off the plane riding her bike down from the airport. A couple waiting for their Harbour Air flight at the airport was wondering what they were going to serve for food during their flight to Victoria. A young guy at the airport complimented her “sweet ride” as she took the wheel off her bike to store it. Her sister met her when she landed in Whistler and Sandra flew up the mountain due to adrenaline, and took two days to recover.
  • Eleanor: The Sound of Music. Eleanor identifies with Maddie’s Aquarius quote. She talked about the devastating impact of the mountain pine beetle, and how we would have been in a different situation if we had mitigated the problem more proactively. She was supposed to be at her BIL’s 75th birthday celebration in Castlegar (“Cancelgar”) this week but due to the fires she has not been able to get there, nor her carry-on suitcase full of freshly-baked celebration cookies.
  • Garth: The Princess Bride or Project Hail Mary. Garth changed the lock set on his front doors.
  • Susan: Anne of Green Gables. Fabulous classification, Maddie! It’s been a devastating life with pine beetles in BC, sad and tragic about the fires going on in BC. Has never seen a better forest than at 2024’s Terrace rotary conference.
  • Danny: The Bourne Identity. Nice to be back from Oslo and visited the Nobel Peace Award Center. Then went to Stockholm, the home of ABBA, “the concert queen”, then went to an island in Sweden known as an enchanting medieval town. THEN went to Copenhagen where he saw a lot of cycling, a lot of people wearing shorts, and Tivoli garden. AND THEN he went to Amsterdam and visited the International Criminal Court, and visited a Rotary club that was founded in 1948. Leaving again this Sunday to do some meteorological photography in Alaska.
  • Melinda: Top Gun. If anyone knows of a butcher or a chef that is looking for work, Melinda is looking for help. Pirate Pack day with the grandchildren – five 8 and unders, was a gong show. Maddie is an amazing young woman who did a wonderful job both today and presenting at schools with Melinda.
  • Peggy: Project Hail Mary. Visited all of the same museums as Danny and just got home yesterday. Originally went to see her son for her 40th year old birthday (and be in a parade!) – a parade for decades: first 100 year olds, then 90 year olds, and so on. Went to Copenhagen, then boarded a cruise ship to Norway, the Faroe islands, and Iceland. Sailed between the icebergs, then did a 5 mile hike up the largest European glacier. Very excited to get involved in the club.
  • Sam: Ratatouille. Bought a house with his parents! Moving out of current place on the 14th, moving into house on September 29th. Thanks to Debbie M for all of her help with buying and selling.
  • Bill: Shawshank Redemption. Went to Montreal, where there was smoke from the fires in Ontario. Visited Sweden with the Smedbergs and it’s My’s birthday today.
  • Kal: Slumdog Millionaire. Had a great dinner at Nook, and proud of Punjabi people in Penticton volunteering to serve food for their community.
  • Debbie M: Fried Green Tomatoes/Steel Magnolias. Maddie did a great job, and has such a warm heart that shines through. Field trip tomorrow to the water park at Granville Island with her granddaughter, who is very excited that she’s coming.
  • Judy: Four Weddings and a Funeral. Went for a walk in the University endowment lands yesterday. Pirate Pack day was packed! Last night watched “Dogman” in the Olympic Village Plaza. Not sure if annual trip to Oliver will be happening this weekend, taking it day by day.
  • Marg: Saving Private Ryan. Having a great week – has been out every night, and tonight going out for dinner with a bunch of teachers from Gilmore. Canning in the off-hours – 200+ jars of dill pickles!
  • Christine M: Le Dîner de Cons (“typical French sarcastic cruel humour”). Today has invited for lunch five colleagues of her mom from “A Child’s Garden” preschool. Great job Maddie – bring more young people into the group!
  • Debbie S: Shawshank Redemption or National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Spent a week up at Whistler with the whole family with a surprise visit from her daughter Nicole. Nicole did some nice family photos of everyone including grandkids, and did an annual hike up the ascent (6km straight uphill) and then Kenan and Nicole did a trail bike ride from Whistler to Pemberton, which was brutal – a lot of downhill steep trail, and so they spent most of their time on the brakes.
  • Dalbir: Apocalypse Now or Animal House. Will be in Africa for the next couple of weeks on a safari – Dalbir, Kal, and ten of their other closest friends.
  • Chris P: Top Gun. Very proud of Maddie! Will be celebrating her dad’s audacious life on Mayne island on August 22nd – he loved red and white polka dots, and so there will be lots of that. Honour guard from Vancouver Fire will be coming as part of the celebration of life. “Dad would have killed us but that’s okay!” There will be about 150 people there, so going over early to prepare for the celebration.
  • Maddie: Les Intouchables. Was terrified of speaking but it didn’t come across. Was house/pet-sitting for her friend this past weekend and left her sunglasses at the house, and the dog wouldn’t go to bed because she smelled Maddie on the sunglasses, so her friend had to bring the sunglasses up to bed with her.
  • Amanda: Meet Joe Black, Thor: Ragnarok, Elf. Good board meeting, resonates with Maddie’s Aquarius comments. Excited for a relaxing week, but in the past 14 hours has changed since her dad is coming to stay with her for 4 days, and then her niece is coming to stay with a friend, and then next Wednesday, her ex-SIL and her friend are coming to visit.
  • Micheal: Can’t Buy Me Love. Family over from Edmonton, went up to Whistler then spent time locally. Took 4 hours to get up to Whistler because of traffic and accidents. Feels very lucky for the natural beauty of BC. Went to playland but is not a “ride person” but his son has passed the 48 inch line so they go on a bunch of rides together, including the pirate ship much to Micheal’s chagrin. Planning to relax for the rest of summer until school opens up.
  • John: I was not there but can's believe no one said SPACE BALLS!
