Blair thanks Chris B. who did the work as he and Kal were the coaches for the scones. He was back to Saskatoon, taking over an apartment building, 45 degrees warmer than last time and now 4º!
Carolyn is on her yearly spring break routine, and everything is just as she left it when she gets home. But she misses them all!
Joyce was in Sechelt staying with her brother in the house that he built completely by himself, including the vaulted ceilings. Sitting by the ocean, it was a wonderful weekend.
Chris M. reminds everyone to enter items and ask for help if needed. Eleanor (1 month old granddaughter) is gorgeous and Moss, the golden retriever is so proud when he goes out with Olivia and the baby, prancing beside the buggy, tail high.
Debbie S. says John has made her addicted to dogs and babies on Instagram. One month today she will be running the London marathon. She reached her fundraising goal; funds will go towards supporting youth of diverse abilities all over the UK. She will be pounding the pavement with her sister - 42.2 km. Debbie’s sister had all her groceries paid for by a stranger who was in line behind her, who wanted to ‘pay it forward.’
Sam thanks us for baking as he likes attention and control. Justin finally got his Nexus card, but it was a long road to hoe. He has been trying since 2018, then it snowed when he tried in Dec. 2019 so he had to reschedule to April 2020, which of course was Covid time, then to Sept. 2023 when he did the Canadian side, knowing that the next time he went to the USA he would get the American part. So, in February he thought he could do it at the time, had everything printed but as it was from 2019, had his wrong name and address. He was sent to a disorganized area with numbered chairs, where he had to talk to everyone to find out his order (not Justin’s thing). He had all his documents, and everything was written clearly, but they wanted him to talk to the agent (not Justin’s thing). He finally got his Nexus in the mail and tried it out this weekend – disappointing as there was no lineup.
Peter says some may think of youth today as being unproductive, but he just read in Business Vancouver about a young group of SFU graduates in their 20s who created a company to recycle EV batteries. They stack the batteries and are using them as a backup power system at YVR and in remote lodges. That is very creative and there are many more batteries that will become available to them.
Chris B. was in California, for her grandson’s swim meet, in the Rosebowl aquatics centre, for 3 days. The swims are 1 min 30 s, but after a one-hour drive. He kept making the finals, so she had to drive every day. It was exciting and fun, with his dad and Chris and Matthew. She will be going back to be with him. Both the 12- and 13-year-old brothers are over 6 ft. She went to 3 museums, with a girlfriend and had a great time. Maybe Malcolm will go one year.
Kal applauds Sam with the Irish soda bread. Welcome back to Garth with no cane. Dalbir is away as he has his grandson from Penticton. We are thinking of Sandra. Next week the speaker will talk about the tunnel.
Marg is back from Palm Springs, where she got wind burn not sun burn. The masseuse comes to the house, but she couldn’t come as there was zero visibility due to dust winds. It is warmer here! But it was great tennis and great to be with Pat.
Garth doesn’t have a cane! Three weeks ago, he got 4 screws and two rods, and is hoping everything will grow together. But no more lifting anything more than the weight of 2 liters of milk during the recovery period. Also, no golf, no twisting, no reaching, no lifting but he can bend over. The pain is gone, the pins and needles are reduced, and he is hoping for back pain to go away completely. Interestingly, the metal detectors in the airport never pick up his metal hips but do signal the knees (where there is no metal). He wonders what will be picked up now.
Melinda had a fabulous week in Palm Springs, saw tennis for the first time which was amazing, and thanks Pat for the wonderful hospitality. The weather was poopy, and it was warmer in Vancouver. Her son and his wife, who goes back to work in April, were going to drive to Palm Springs, but they were all sick and the baby was projectile vomiting. Melinda was laughing, but her son wasn’t. They are there now, and it is 31º. Melinda got a new car – a Suburban, not electric so she gave us money. John traded in Melinda’s Buick, so Melinda guesses the Suburban is hers. But she uses the Volvo to get through the tunnel.
Larry thanks Sam. Last year he treated all his siblings to his place in Palm Springs in honour of their mom, rented them cars and they had so much fun that they are going to do it again, no spouses of course. Next weekend is Easter, which is like Christmas for Larry, who gives presents to the kids. He will have the house to himself because Steve will be in Las Vegas.
Jeannette went to the Star gala last Saturday with Susan. At the end of the event, a guy approached her, and she thought it was Susan’s husband as he was speaking as if he knew her. He thought she was April, a friend of May. So, they had a good conversation between strangers. Her sad news is that one of the nurses passed away with colon cancer at 54 years old. She didn’t have any treatment as her husband refused, and only did plant-based and juices, even though the medical people told her to do chemo, etc. She has three kids. She had the cancer for 9 years with no pain and discovered it in December. Larry is looking after the service which will be a party.
Danny was in Cambodia, for the third time. He visited the killing fields. In 1975 - 79 about 2 million Cambodians were killed as part of a broad Cambodian genocide. When he was in Phnom Penhin he visited the 2-story memorial with thousands of skulls, and he could feel the spirits. He has visited other memorials and is hopeful that something will be done about genocides.
Elena was in the Philippines for 6 weeks doing humanitarian work and will do a presentation soon. She was also part of the dental mission. She hosted a guest, a CEO of a Seniors Society, for 6 days, curious to know if she could expand her services.
Amanda thanks Sam. Her sister was in town for her dad’s 65th birthday yesterday. He is happy about the long list of the seniors’ discounts available to him, where he can eat, etc. She has booked a flight to her cousin’s wedding in Saskatoon. She has so many cousins, that she actually thinks this cousin may have been married before.
Carolyn saw the Museum of Memory and Tolerance in Mexico City, where the theme is ‘Never Again’, although there have been more genocides since. It was very powerful. Thanks to Danny.
Bobby says the girls in Las Vegas had same bad weather as in Palm Springs. His daughter was here from Toronto, so they went to run on the Sea Wall, and are going to the Parq casino tomorrow for her birthday. Micheal has been charging Bobby’s credit card for his house expenses. The kids were on Robson St. at the Black and Blue restaurant and tried to use Bobby’s credit card on their phone, but it was maxed out and they were astounded that they couldn’t use it! (Ed. Note - it was also used to pay Kal's delinquent club fees!
Pat was on Zoom as she woke up with a bad headache and has a dental appointment afterwards and is sad to have missed the cooking show. She had a wonderful time with Marg and Melinda in Palm Springs, had incredible tennis seats, but the bad weather was disappointing, and they only went in the pool once. She received a great video from Danny about the Caring Hearts Dental Mission.
Henry spends days in Victoria and hates hearing about vacations!
Bob thanks Sam. He is trying to get Bobby to spend more money, and so far, he bought shoes and a new car, but is looking at Rolex watches for over $100 000 dollars. But actually, the decimals were wrong, and it was at Costco prices. Since he was 4 years old, Bob has always had sugar - cookies, chocolate etc. For 5 weeks this Sunday, he has had no sugar other than fruit and raw honey. He feels great. The next step is alcohol.
