Warning - the following contains statements that were made at the breakfast meeting Thursday August 3rd.(Oh and some that were not made.)

Elena was at the UBC hospital in confinement last Saturday. She was not allowed to eat solid foods for 5 days, only liquids, and lost 5 pounds in 5 days. A suggested weight-loss program? (Not for Debbie M.! She would have gained 5 pounds!) Elena had her 5-year checkup for colin cancer.  All good. Hooray🥳
Jeannette had no holidays, but all good.

Peachy was tired last weekend as her apartment is being renovated, so she is packing her stuff to move out for 2 months.  Thanks, Susan, for helping with finding new clients and letting Peachy help with Susan’s Mom.

Micheal on Monday went to Cultus Lake water slides with the children.  It was so busy, with Americans. It is a big money grab, with no one sitting in the new cabanas.  He’s looking forward to the PNE next weekend.  Sue’s away from the office, in Ottawa, so Michael actually had to contribute to running the banquet halls.  Bobby has been amazed!!! 😲
Blair is almost completely moved into his condo but might stay longer at Dalbir’s. Kal is happy to have him. Dalbir, not so much.

Amanda says her 100-day challenge is going well, and she is turning into a good cook.  She’s been out walking for hours, but not running at all.  Look at her Instagram Account for countdown days.

Melinda reports that her ex and his wife are arriving this morning, but their flight was delayed, so she’s picking them up later.  They’ll be staying with her for a month. (Oh you white people!!) Newman’s will be in the parade in Tsawwassen, wearing bacon costumes, (better than the cow costume from last year, which might be flying behind a car this year). 🐄
Sandra spent 10 days in Whistler, biking and even played golf (pub version).  You choose a hole, a drink and the number of times you’ll drink it (e.g., hole 1, 1 beer, 10 sips is “par”).  Water hazards mean no washroom!

Garth won his long trial, which was reported in Richmond News without mentioning his firm.  L  He’s off to Whistler.

Bobby played tennis with his daughter for the first time. Pickle ball is busy.  Sue is away from the office still.  He is looking forward to the weekend.

Debbie S. was in Whistler, Nicole and Fred are in New Zealand.  She is decluttering.

John coached all his kids in softball while they were growing up, and they all played together this week, and he couldn’t help but continue to coach. He suggested a bunt and it was the right choice as they won.  But Darcy ended up in the hospital concussed, after she ran into a big fellow, catching a fly ball.

Chris M. has no down time yet, after the wedding, her ex leaving on July 24, at the cabin July 25 for a week, building and laying flooring, then looking after the dog for two weeks as Olivia and Matt are off to Montreal and New York.  Max is well on his German island, although it is raining, and he’s been sick.

Debbie T. thought Aladdin was fantastic at Queen Elizabeth Theatre, enjoyed the colours, lights, dancing and singing.   Welcome to Henry today.  The pub night sold out, with extra people that came, they had bands, and it was a good event. She is biking getting ready for the Tour de Cure but hurt her knee getting off her bike!

Henry Yao was at the Open House at Garden City Lands where sake was offered, from a local in Abbotsford where they’re growing rice.

Larry, we wish you a Happy Birthday.  He was struggling in the morning to get up and going, but he’s here as a committed Rotarian.  Yay!  He had birthday dinners through the week and a big weekend coming with his mom’s sister’s passing, so that makes 6 of the siblings in less than a year.  When his aunt died, her son who is also Larry, was mentioned in the obituary, so our Larry  is getting disturbing phone calls of misdirected condolences.  He says it’s easy to lose 5 pounds if you go 5 days without a drink.  (Unless you are Debbie M. then you would gain 5 pounds assuming she could go 5 days without a drink.) 🤣
Pat was at Granville Island last week and saw a mother seal and her baby who was doing flips in the water. She is leaving early as her son’s family is off to Saskatchewan.

Dalbir went to Kelowna last weekend for a wedding and felt ashes from the Osoyoos fire.  He has a new job as he has been helping a business part time since his friend Ron passed away, and is taking on stabilization of the business for a year, so they can sell it.  Meets his skill set!

Gordon apologizes that he invited his fan club to come to the meeting this morning, but they didn’t show up.  He used to stay with his ex in Mexico and vice versa, and it isn’t funny, we’re all good friends.  Sophie might be staying with Justin.(Oh you white people!)

Susan has been away for a few weeks, first with stomach flu, then working in another department at Costco starting at 7 a.m. There was a near miss with Ryan waking up late on Wednesday so she was not there to make sure he got up on Thursday.  She went to Granville Island with a friend last week.  Last night she went to try pickle ball and it was fun.

Chris B. has been away a few weeks, has been teaching and in Alberta.  She thought Chris M. said she got the Kahlua, not the “gluea” for her floor installation.  The grandchildren arrive tonight for 13 days.

Marg has been doing no walking, running or pickle ball this week.  She loves to watch TV.  A family reunion of 35 on the weekend, and canning every day, making dills, salsa, bread and butter pickles and ginger marmalade are keeping her busy.  She blended two salsa recipes and included cayenne with no red pepper flakes, but it was so spicy she needed two gin and tonics to get over it.  She halved the batch with no peppers and blended with other.  Watch out, you might be getting a jar!

Judy was at a Canadians game last Sunday fundraising for Alzheimer’s.  Yesterday her oldest grandson was 14, celebrating at the Spaghetti Factory.  She had lunch in Steveston yesterday with former teacher friends.  Tomorrow she’s off to Birch Bay for the long weekend.  She is watching the fires in Osoyoos as next week is the annual Oliver trip.

Debbie M. was at Dockside last week with Judy and Larry and Steve.  She’s having trouble with intermittent fasting so will try intermittent colonoscopy.🙂  She’s soon going to her ex’s place for a visit.  (white people?)

Kal had a great coffee downtown and his wife wants to live there.  The bad news is he will be away for two weeks, and the good news is he’ll be away for two weeks.  He’ll be doing seven days of drinking for a wedding starting in White Rock, then in Richmond, Vancouver, North Vancouver – he will float back in two weeks.

Bill was in the championship and won.  First one! 🥳  No Jaffe MVPs this time. 😩 The party to celebrate and awards was on Monday and Bill was the gayest player.  With two events for Pride last Thursday, a drag race, and the new pride route ending at B.C. place, it’s exhausting!

Sam was at camp for work, learning language in nature, focusing on a different sense every day, with “touch the bush and tell us what you feel” activities.  Friday, he went to the Posh Ball, a pride event with ballroom culture, a historical part of gay culture from the Eastern coast of U.S.  It was lots of fun.  Sunday he is walking with the hockey team in the pride parade.  Hopefully the next generation won’t need parades anymore.

Peter doesn’t have an ex to come to stay with him, although his wife maybe wishes so.  (wait until you spend your year as president – hahahahah!) He’s getting the house painted and it’s looking good.

Joyce was late arriving, but we’re glad she came.  She is looking forward to going to California tomorrow for a couple of weeks.

Bob on Saturday morning saw Nicci at the airport, and his ex (both kept looking straight ahead, never at each other) (Oh you brown people!).  The Mexico trip resort was great for families, with lots of kids, good food, amazing fish, swimming in the ocean. Except for the 15 ft long tailless alligator who comes every day to sunbathe for half an hour.  So, everyone was told to get out, then told they could go back in the ocean, but who wanted to?  He remained calm even though there was a drip in the bathroom.  He calmly phoned maintenance, who sent workers speaking Spanish and finally said there’s a leak.  But they got moved to a new room, upgraded to the penthouse (all because Bob was calm).

When an issue arises that has the potential to be divisive, what better way to get some independent perspective than asking what is soon to become our Overlord/Overlady/Overthey - AI. Here is what chatGPT has to say about the pros and cons of "Woke."

The term "woke" has gained significant prominence in recent times, referring to individuals who are socially aware and actively engaged in advocating for social justice, equality, and progressive values. While the concept of being "woke" has sparked positive changes and encouraged meaningful conversations, it has also faced criticism and encountered challenges along the way. This essay explores the pros and cons of the "woke" movement, shedding light on its impact on society.
Pros:
  1. Social Awareness: One of the most significant advantages of the "woke" movement is its ability to raise awareness about social issues. By encouraging discussions on topics like racism, sexism, LGBTQ+ rights, and environmental concerns, the movement has brought these pressing matters into the public spotlight, stimulating consciousness and empathy within communities.
  2. Promotes Inclusivity: The "woke" movement advocates for inclusivity and diversity, promoting an environment where individuals from different backgrounds feel accepted and valued. Emphasizing inclusivity helps create a more tolerant and understanding society, fostering mutual respect and appreciation for each other's differences.
  3. Encourages Accountability: The "woke" movement challenges individuals, corporations, and institutions to be accountable for their actions and policies. By calling out instances of discrimination and inequality, the movement pushes for transparency and justice, ultimately leading to positive changes in both public and private spheres.
  4. Empowerment of Marginalized Groups: The "woke" movement amplifies the voices of marginalized communities that have historically been silenced. By providing platforms for these voices, the movement helps empower these groups, granting them the opportunity to influence policies and societal norms that directly affect their lives.
  5. Cultural Progress: As the "woke" movement gains momentum, cultural progress is fostered. It encourages an ongoing conversation about the evolution of societal norms, values, and behaviors, leading to greater acceptance of previously marginalized identities and perspectives.
Cons:
  1. Overly Aggressive Approach: Critics argue that some proponents of the "woke" movement adopt an overly aggressive approach, leading to the cancel culture phenomenon. In this environment, individuals or organizations that make mistakes are often subjected to swift and severe social media backlash, sometimes hindering constructive dialogue and growth.
  2. Division and Polarization: The "woke" movement has also faced criticism for inadvertently contributing to societal divisions and polarization. In certain instances, the movement's focus on identity politics and group identity may lead to the alienation of certain communities, exacerbating tensions rather than fostering unity.
  3. Suppression of Free Speech: In its quest to promote inclusivity and protect vulnerable groups, the "woke" movement has been accused of suppressing free speech. Some argue that certain opinions or viewpoints are labeled as offensive or harmful, leading to self-censorship and inhibiting open discourse.
  4. Simplification of Complex Issues: Critics contend that the "woke" movement may oversimplify complex societal issues, reducing them to binary arguments. This simplification could undermine the depth of understanding necessary to address these problems effectively.
  5. Potentially Shallow Activism: There are concerns that the "woke" movement could lead to shallow or performative activism, where individuals engage in symbolic gestures without taking substantive actions to create tangible change. This phenomenon may dilute the movement's impact over time.
Conclusion:
The "woke" movement has undeniably brought about important discussions, empowering marginalized groups, and advocating for a more inclusive society. However, it also faces criticism for its aggressive approach, potential divisiveness, and concerns about suppressing free speech. As with any social movement, finding a balance between advocating for positive change and avoiding unintended negative consequences remains a crucial challenge. Engaging in constructive dialogue and actively listening to differing perspectives may offer a path forward, leading to a more equitable and unified future.

For the record your editor would hate to see the fellowship, fun, and laughter we have on Thursday mornings change.
