Mary-Lou’s Dad’s Celebration of Life is this Sunday. She successfully drove the camper from Montreal. Northern Ontario was gorgeous, and Lake Superior has tides! They had a great time with Lindsey. There is a decided lack of WIFI in the backroads of Ontario. Arriving in B.C. they were faced with smoke, and she is thinking of all those who have lost their houses.
Garth had a nerve root blocked in his back, went back to do it again, as they rummaged around, and it worked, so he has 60% relief.
Pat is dressed for golf as she was taking Elena, Peachy and Jeannette to practise golf. Peachy is ill after the cruise. Pat leaves for Palm Springs this week, to check on her place which is ok.
Susan was on holiday last week, doing errands and facing challenges, arriving at the passport office before it opened, going to physio, then to ICBC, bought a replacement car in Delta, finished her day at 1 a.m. She is happy to get back to work. Her mom’s good family friend lives in West Kelowna and has been affected by the fires, and they are waiting to hear if their house is still standing.
Dalbir would like to do something for the victims of fires, such as donating through Shirley Pat (see email). He was in Kelowna last week, and witnessed the fire advancing, including to Keremeos and UBC Okanagan.
Kal is in wedding mode as Lavina’s niece is getting married in Chilliwack. At the Nike campus in Portland, Kal was wearing his Adidas shoes, and on the tour a security guard told him he wasn’t allowed to wear Adidas shoes and escorted him to the pickup! He is currently out on bail. He negotiated the same deal as Trump. You should see the mug shot.
Bill was in Seattle last week. Shelley’s check-up for colon cancer is fine. He jerked his knee when getting IV and has a bruise in his inner elbow.
Peter is supposed to be at the cabin but didn’t go because of the smoke. Friends live in Kelowna and were evacuated as big patches of embers were landing on their deck.
Marg was at Green Lake, with only one day of smoke, but then they couldn’t see at all, and she needed to use an inhaler. They got home before the highway closed!
Sandra reports that Laine Ferguson and Ryan are doing well, but many of their friends lost homes in the Lahaina area fires.
Judy had four wonderful days in Oliver, but then it became hazy and was raining ash on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday – they kept watching the situation on the roads. Her daughter-in-law’s grandmother (who is 98) and family were on evacuation alert. This year in Oliver the adults won the water gun fight again but that won’t last long as the kids are getting sneaky and big. The wine tours were good. Today she’s going on a mystery picnic with family, then babysitting in Birch Bay. She will go to the waterslides and look after Jack. Lindsey was hit in her car yesterday but is ok and had a witness and policemen on hand. The U-Haul driver who ran away, came back.
Debbie M. reported that one of their tenants just bought their first home and lost it in the fire. It is getting close to back to school and the Backpack Buddies fundraising is under way. Many children without adequate food are going back to school and we can donate (even $20) to cover weekend food. Maybe have a look and find out how to help. The Steveston Regatta had so much wind that some dragon boats almost capsized, some continued, some didn’t, and Debbie’s team won the silver medal. 🥈
Jeannette went to a cabin for two nights, including hiking and a visit to Lightning Lake, returned Saturday and missed the smoke. She went to a Philippines concert, promoting Winter Escapades a tourism package and flights deal. She has the brochure.
Elena came back from the Alaska cruise. There were 16 of them in the group and they enjoyed the “all you can eat” amazing food. There was a walkathon fundraiser for the Alaska park. Peachy was always at the Rolling Stone nightclub! Apologies to Pat for not being ready to practise golf today.
Danny was gone a month visiting the main historical and must-sees in Italy (including Pompei (79 AD), Greece, Turkey, Croatia, and France. He brought back a rotary banner from Athens. An amazing traveller!
Micheal was also away, to Playland over the weekend, for the third time this year, and also went to the PNE which was cool. He’s back to work this week. We’re glad he’s here this week, after multiple snooze buttons last week.🎡 🎢
Debbie T. had therapy on her neck last week, so it has been stiff. As insurers, they’ve had many clients come in for support. She is getting ready for her bike ride this weekend, although doesn’t feel prepared, but is hopeful. We’ll be thinking of her. August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day and there is an event at Garry point from 4-9 p.m.
Gordon is amazed by Danny’s travels, and is thinking of Pompei, and Lahaina and the devastation in both.
Bobby connected with KidsPlay last week to do the back-to-school backpack event, with Save On Foods, Ghirra Toy Drive and BC Lions and others. They drove 50 kids to the hall for games and gifts, supporting them with school supplies and food. “Giving is part of living” is part of the Ghirra family motto. He is spending time with his daughter until she leaves on Saturday.
Chris M. suggests listening to the New York Times Podcast describing a personal account of the Lahaina fire. (You can listen or read the podcast under Meanderings.) She is going to be a grandmother at the end of February as Olivia is expecting! 👩🍼
Bob’s Hawaii trip was cancelled, but he is waiting to see if he can book again. Mariel didn’t ask for support, but her cause is deserving.
