Rethinking Healthcare: A Personal Journey Toward Better Access

At our recent meeting, healthcare entrepreneur and community leader Jabir Nathu shared a compelling and deeply personal perspective on the future of Canadian healthcare—and why change is urgently needed.

Rather than promoting his new venture, Arden Health, Jabir took us through the experiences that shaped his mission. He reflected on his parents’ decision to come to Canada decades ago in search of better healthcare and opportunity, and posed a provocative question: Is our healthcare system still delivering on that promise today?

Drawing on both personal and professional experience—including leading a top-ranked senior care organization in the UK—Jabir highlighted a growing gap between the quality of care Canada can provide and the difficulty many face in accessing it. Long wait times for specialists, a shortage of family doctors, and increasing system strain were familiar challenges echoed by many in the room.

Interestingly, Jabir challenged common assumptions. He noted that Canada actually has more healthcare professionals and spends significantly more on healthcare than in the past. The issue, he argued, is not simply a lack of resources—but that our system is still structured for a different era. Designed decades ago for a younger population and episodic care, it now struggles to meet the needs of an aging population with complex, ongoing health conditions.

His proposed path forward? A more modern, team-based approach to care. This includes greater use of nurse practitioners as primary points of contact, supported by a broader network of allied health professionals such as mental health specialists, dietitians, and physiotherapists. He emphasized the importance of proactive, preventative care—helping patients navigate the system and manage their health before issues become critical.

Jabir also addressed the sensitive topic of private healthcare, suggesting that carefully designed, accessible private services—particularly in preventative care—could complement the public system without compromising equity.

Arden Health, set to launch in Richmond later this year, aims to pilot this model: combining team-based care, improved navigation support, and a focus on prevention to deliver better outcomes at lower cost.

Throughout his talk, Jabir’s message was clear: Canada’s healthcare system remains something to be proud of—but to meet today’s realities, it must evolve. His work represents an early step toward that transformation.

MEANDERINGS

Who doesn't like a grilled cheese sandwich. So naturally it has to have it's day of the year. Which happens to be Ta Da - Today. So enjoy. Unless you are like me and had grilled cheese yesterday. Oops!

April 12th is Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day, the ultimate comfort food. It consists of grilled bread and warm gooey melted cheese. The modern version comes from the 1920s in the United States, when sliced bread became a hit. Despite its simplicity, a grilled cheese sandwich can taste differently according to the toppings you add: a blend of various cheeses, white or wholewheat bread, and seasoning. Adding raw or sauteed vegetables and herb-infused oils can also make a huge difference!

But more importantly it is also the International Day of Human Space Flight. Read this star gazers and Artemis II watchers.

The beginning of the space era for mankind

The General Assembly, in its resolution A/RES/65/271 of 7 April 2011, declared 12 April as the International Day of Human Space Flight “to celebrate each year at the international level the beginning of the space era for mankind, reaffirming the important contribution of space science and technology in achieving sustainable development goals and increasing the well-being of States and peoples, as well as ensuring the realization of their aspiration to maintain outer space for peaceful purposes.”

12 April 1961 was the date of the first human space flight, carried out by Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet citizen. This historic event opened the way for space exploration for the benefit of all humanity.

The General Assembly expressed its deep conviction of the common interest of mankind in promoting and expanding the exploration and use of outer space, as the province of all mankind, for peaceful purposes and in continuing efforts to extend to all States the benefits derived there from.

I've taken the rest of the day off to ruminate on whether a straw has one hole or two.
