The external Paul Harris Dinner is scheduled for June 15th at Quilchena Golf Club and tickets will be $75 each.

Joint board meeting May 31 – present and incoming board at Richmond Country Club.

June 21 is the new District Governor installation at Inn at the Key in New Westminster starting at 5:30 and a ticket costs $75.

The President’s dinner is Wednesday June 22 at 6 PM at the Steveston Seafood House. The cost will be $50 per person plus drinks. A set menu will be sent around in advance.

Max is coming. We need to find three more host families and we have only one so far through Sandra. We voted as a club to take an exchange student. He is here from August to June and a family usually host for three months. He has a lot of interests and speaks 5 languages. Even if not hosting please try an include the student in activities. See Sam's email for Max's application.

So there is room for more.

May 25^th is the District 5040 AGM by Zoom.

As Bobby will club treasurer next year, Michael will be the contact person for club Riverside bookings to avoid conflicts.

Marg is still looking for breakfast providers for October and December.

Only two days that nothing can be done yesterday and tomorrow.

Marg's sister still living with them and getting along sometimes(actually mostly) but memories of growing up are sometimes different. Like events that happened before Carol was born(possibly reincarnation). Ben has joined special Olympics soccer team and after the first practice, (which was great along with the coach) Ben exclaimed "they are all special needs" There were some kids on the team that he knew.

Michael is winding down towards a busy weekend starting tonight. His Netflix subscription must have run out.

Chris B when her husband comes and speaks and after he speaks she has to leave to Alberta an then California. Not happy about having to be at the airport three hours before. Son is taking her to see Chicago and the Beach Boys. Who although not all still alive are active. If interested follow this link. are the beach boys still alive - Search (bing.com)
Kal was on a 52 foot yacht club for the clubs sail past. The vessel was immediately arrested as a result of sanctions on oligarchs.

Bob, speaking of child hood memories has a friend who remembers everything and Bob remembers nothing - at least that is what he says under cross examination.

Zara Shoker has finished her classes and is going to Alberta to see an Edmonton and Calgary hockey game. She said she was an Edmonton fan and was almost booed out of the meeting.
I was just back from the Okanagan and explained why the tooth fairy makes his/her/they homes out of teeth instead of bricks. Maybe if the tooth fairy collected brains she would have enough bricks for a home.

Gordon when he bought his place had a nice field and view and was told he would not lose the view. Huh, Britannia has been built since.

Sandra speaking of housing being built, has a house 48 inches from hers. Saw "Singing in the Rain" with the symphony orchestra and really enjoyed it. Has been speaking with Laine who loves Nelson and the neighbourhood. She and Ryan work remotely but Kai, who is now four and snow skiing, is in day care so Ryan and she can do their work.

Christine M. will never leave Richmond and is living on same property since 1960 when her parents paid $12,000 for two acres. Chris used to sail on dike ditches(Tom Sawyer anyone) and duck under the bridges. They had a huge vegetable garden and strawberry fields forever.

Garth survived five days of Chor Leone concerts. Received a great complement from note singers from the US. They are unique in the world Chor Leone that is.

Bobby had good and bad news, his daughter has been promoted with RBC and but will be moving to Toronto.

Carolyn moved to Richmond in 1984. Will be celebrating her birthday for the whole weekend and her four year old grand daughter is thrilled to be making the cake. Hmm will it be angel food or devil's food cake?

Dick enjoyed "Singing in the Rain" as well. No he was not outside doing his Gene Kelly imitation, Barb made him do it in the shower. Off to the hospital for removing a piece of skin behind his right ear. Hopefully back home at the end of the day.

Melinda is going to celebrate like there is no tomorrow. Then off to PG for the district conference.

Sam on Sunday celebrated his anniversary with Justin a close second event to his Rotary anniversary today. It was also Moose's birthday who tried to eat a bee. Was it a decoration on his cake? Sam is still recovering from something and the four negative Covid tests in a row has not helped. He will be back in person next Thursday.

Pat moved out and then back into Richmond in 1971 even though prices were high. Pat spent the weekend recovering from her bout of Omicron B.2(which is not a Vitamin B variant). Her grand daughter's volleyball team went to the national championship and placed tenth out of 106. Pat is also heading to the conference in PG taking the highway one expressway - hey it is only a 10 hour drive. Will possibly visit nephew in Smithers. Hey what's another 4 hour drive.

Our speaker, Mayor Malcolm told us about how much Richmond has changed over the years and how it has come to be now. Now we have Canada Line, an international airport, big buildings and big houses. In 1879, 63 Europeans signed Letters Patent to create the Township of Richmond. Many of those names are on Richmond schools. A town hall was built at 3 and Cambie on 5 acres of land bought for $400 and $444 for building. It was replaced over the years until 2000 when the new city hall was opened. The Lulu Island had a car ferry from Steveston to Vancouver Island and to Delta. There was a bridge in the south Granville area to Sea island and then to Lulu island. The Oak street bridge was built in the late 50s and had tollbooths until 1963. The tunnel was built in sections and then lowered down to the bottom of the river. The Fraser street bridge was replaced with the Knight street bridge in 1974. Arthur Laing bridge was built in 1976 but did not have on ramps from Richmond until 1986 because of Vancouver's concern over too much traffic.
Until 1958 the Richmond transit system was the interurban electric tram all the way to Steveston that was used for commerce as well. Until 1920 cars drove on the left not the right. When the rules changed the exits from the tram had to change to the right side. Way back when tall ships came to the canneries for fish, and the mail and milk was delivered with horse and buggy. The Fisherman’s hospital established in 1900, has a claim to be the home of medicare as fisherman were treated who did not have the financial ability to pay. There was an opera house in Steveston where Pauline Johnson performed. There was a theatre in Steveston. Malcolm showed old photos of the fishing docks, the Hepworth building and old stores and buildings.
The plan is to build 15 towers around the Richmond Centre. There were once two race tracks in Richmond at Lansdowne and Minoru. Lansdowne, built on the old race track after Langs was rejected, as a result of the new community plan, will become a mixture of commercial and residential development and green space. The idea is idea to have green corridor from Garden City Lands to Olympic oval long with civic space, affordable housing and an open air mall. What used to be a volunteer fire department is now 6 or 7 fire stations. The Police and Fire used to share the same building. The first air terminal was in 1929. New buildings in the city centre will need to use or be retrofitted to use geothermal energy. The City is building homeless facilities and a modular facility is to be built in the Bridgeport area and a permanent shelter in the ironwood area. The theme was knowing the heritage of the city is important when moving forward with plans for the future.

Meanderings

So if you think that technological change is happening faster and faster, you would be right. If you graphed technological change starting in about 1750 until now, the graph would look like a hockey stick. No it was not drawn by Al Gore. Moore's law says that the speed of microchips doubles every two years starting in 1971 and it has. Quoting from Thomas Friedman's book " Thank you for Being Late". If you took Intel's first generation microchip from 1971 and compared it to the latest chip Intel has on the market today it offers 3,500 times more performance, is 90,000 times more energy efficient and is about 60,000 times lower in cost. "To put it more vividly, Intel engineers did a rough calculation of what would happen had a 1971 Volkswagen Beetle improved at the same rate as microchips did under Moore's Law. These are the numbers: Today, that Beetle would be able to go about three hundred thousand miles per hour. It would get two million miles per gallon of gas, and it would cost four cents! Intel engineers also estimated that if automobile fuel efficiency improved at the same rate as Moore's Law, you could, roughly speaking, drive a car your whole life on one tank of gas."

Okay so viruses and bacteria are getting a make over as we have learned that many are vital to the well being of the planet including humans. Well parasites may well be starting to get the same treatment. Scientific American has an article entitled Parasites Lost, do some deserve protection? One that doesn't is a 130 foot tape worm "snugly coiled inside whale guts." Feeling uncomfortable? If you thought IBS was bad!
