SERGEANT At Arms Tidbits
Bobby’s family is ditching him and going to Spain for 14 days, so he’ll be home alone (Bobby aka Kevin McAllister) but he’ll have his credit card statement to keep him company. They had only just arrived at the airport when he saw there was already a $3000 upgrade charged! His garden didn’t get started this year because of trips to London, China, etc.
Debbie T. is swamped with speech writing for grad ceremonies across the school district and changed it this year to include the four-way test and it’s pretty good. She is doing Palmer and Richmond High and is going to Kwantlen today to speak about social policy and the Richmond District SOGI policy and the process to get to it. When at Seafair, she got back into her car, and it wouldn’t go out of park. It’s in the shop and it will be a huge bill. The Metro Theatre recognized Rotary at Joseph and the Technicolour Dream Coat for supporting them with the purchase of a new sound system.
Sandra says her niece Kelly is home form London, is a lawyer and is moving to Vancouver, which is great because her sister lives on the Island and will visit more.
Melinda says congratulations to Debbie, Bobby and Blair who stuck it out to the end of the Firefighter’s charity golf tournament, and it’s for such a good cause (photos: Richmond Firefighters Golf Tournament | Rotary Club of Richmond Sunrise). She loves Mr, Februarry those firemen (so do others), but she was forgotten at hole 14 and had to call for help. She went to Whistler to Bobby’s condo last minute this week, but John was stressed driving up afraid he was going to miss the soccer game in Mexico.
Chewy was in Toronto for work, and extended family that he really likes live in Ottawa. He told them when he was arriving, but was warned that the cousins were in Denmark, one went somewhere else, and he thought oh no, it would just be him and his uncle-in-law, but it turned out to be great.
Garth was the only one who walked the course at the golf tournament. He was with John(actually it was Newman, John not Marquardt John), Brian and Micheal, lots of fun. So much fun, only John (Marquardt, John) showed up to the meeting today. He read an article about Santa Ono applying to be president of FloridaUniversity; he’s a mover, and had to be approved by a GOP committee, but was turned down for his position on DEI, (although he disowned it).
Pat thinks it would have been more fun if she’d played in the golf tournament instead of volunteering. The putting was changed from last year as there were bottles of booze before. She was stuck on hole 14 with Melinda. She won a London Drugs gift card, but someone had forgotten to load it. She was trying to fix some jewellery -- how do you keep the crazy glue off your fingers? It didn’t even work on the jewellery.
Susan was busy last week at Costco at 6 am but still managed to make it to the firefighters’ dinner -- without volunteering! She won BC Lions club tickets.
Larry was in Birch Bay to host 65th and 80th birthday parties. He’s hosting a dinner for 40 tonight for St. Joseph’s for their pastor who is leaving. 7 courses doing it all himself, for all the priests.
Jeannette volunteered at the tournament and it was her first experience riding on a golf cart! Big news from the hospital -- beer is now a prescription for patients.
Gordon was missed and missed himself too the last couple of weeks – he was “sleeping in the car park” (see previous bulletin for details). His father-in-law had a prescription for two bottles of Guinness every day. It was an interesting egg drop game this morning, and he hadn’t had so much fun since... grade three.
Elena enjoyed the dinner at the golf tournament and says congratulations to Debbie M on her Air Canada tickets. If she will be travelling around Canada, Elena wants to join her. She enjoyed the pancake breakfast at Gilmore. She went to Vancouver to organize the Victoria Drive event (the trouble when you have an idea is that it’s hard to quit – it’s been 18 years!). The consul generals will be attending as well as city officials. It’s on Saturday August 9.
Danny received our congratulations on the winning photos. He saw the Mesmerica 360 at the Macmillan Space Centre, an immersive view of hypnotic paintings, featuring the composer James Hood, sitting in a 360 dome with an aim to relax your mind, settle the stress and give you more power.
Chris M. is wearing white (almost all) because she already had the clothes out from her CFUW event on Monday evening, with a Diner en Blanc theme. Two members got out their wedding dresses! Her hat was a $3 Dollarama purchase! It was a great success.
Dalbir, with wife Kal away, was solo with 4-year-old grandson. Blair came over with 4 bottles of wine, he had won 18 and dashed out. The prizes were obviously very nice at the tournament. Dalbir learned how much people are willing to help, they have a child psychologist and her daughter to help, and they offered to stay at the house if they need a break. Jacob has had no parenting, so it is a challenge.
John was subjected to the little plastic duck trick – went to his brother in law’s place, where the kids and grandkids were hiding the little ducks around the house, numbered to 122. When they got back home, someone had hidden them in their home, too, and they have now found 63, and no one will admit to having hidden them. His daughter has 3000 viewers on her YouTube videos!
Martin is studying and working, with lots of reading about labour stuff for his job. Sounds like he needs a Rotary fun break.
Marg has beennon-stop eating, and for Choice school, attended an amazing dinner. It was the last Gilmore breakfast, and Drew made 144 sausages, which must have been so good because they ran out of pancakes for the first time, although there were other things to eat of course (photos: Gilmore Breakfast Wrap! | Rotary Club of Richmond Sunrise). They got a nice thank you card. In England, you automatically get Guinness. She was at the Steveston Seafood House last night for a Byng school fundraising for a new playground, $80 for a full course meal, and Shane gave $50 of each dinner to the school, and the staff worked for free.
Judy had a birthday dinner Sunday, with the twins, who turned 9, and another lunch too. At the golf tournament, she sat between Debbie and Blair, and was one number off each of their prizes, Debbie won flights to anywhere and Blair won the wine. She got a little message from Bobby who won the keg. No prizes, but she had fun. Connor, her 12-year-old grandson, played in the jazz band and was at the Children’s Festival at Granville Island on Saturday but too bad it was pouring rain. It took 25 minutes to get out of Granville Island, a nightmare. She just got a message from her daughter-in-law, that Connor was asked to do 3-week camp in July ending in a Peter Rabbit show, as they enjoyed Connor’s confidence and talents – and see him as a strong candidate for future roles (He must get his glam from his Grandma!).
Debbie M. had fun at the golf tournament but warns everyone not to go near Blair in a golf cart as he backed into them, the golf carts upended, clunked – who knew burning rubber in a golf cart was a thing. It was a great job done by the firemen who were very appreciative of Rotary (in fact, everyone there knew about Rotary!). She was paddling a lot this week, going out for lunches, but her birthday was in April and celebrations are running longer this year. Her granddaughter thinks she’s learning to spell, yelling out random letters and laughing when everything seems to spell “poopoo”. She’s hysterical!
Bill will be online for next couple of meetings as Shelley is having surgery, and he will be home dog sitting. [ED: those are two separate thoughts, Bill loves his wife.]
Sam and Justin have been together for 11 years. Sam has been playing hockey all that time and Justin hadn’t seen one game... which is “fine.” (Is it though?) Justin’s argument is that he wouldn’t get anything out of it, and anyways, Sam has his own friends and Dad to share the experience with. But Justin’s become friends with people on the hockey team who have been pressuring him to go, with the rationale that if you go to one, you never have to go again – which speaks to Justin. So, he came on Monday and Sam got to introduce him to people he’d talked about, too bad they lost 5-1. Sam told Justin he could be as critical as he wanted but needed to give at least one compliment. Surprisingly, Justin said he had a good time and might even come back. The lesson is that Sam should be pushing Justin to do more things he says no to. (There was much headshaking in the room). [ED: Indeterminate if the head shaking was up and down or left to right.]
Kal had a great time at the golf tournament but couldn’t walk afterwards after being involved in the golf cart melee; went to Reflections at the Georgia Hotel and couldn’t make it down the escalator. He is going to France and Monaco. His niece is getting married in Nice, which is nice. (Marg warned him to be aware that if you’re looking at your cell phone, walking along, someone on a bike might whisk by and steal it.)
Peter updated us on his cousin who slipped on the cruise ship. It wasn’t a slip but was a minor stroke and now she has had a major stroke. They flew her from France to Nanaimo in a medivac. The insurance said don’t worry, we have you covered. She’s now in Nanaimo, not talking, and her right side is not moving.
