Susan had the wrong Zoom link, but we were happy to finally see her and hear her inspirational quote.
Bobby was on Zoom in snowless Whistler, looking for snow.
Gordon was talking with former District Governors about what they did 20 years ago, so the memory is still working for the old guys! They are also still capable of talking on and on and ……
Chris P. is excited about spending two nights at the Westin Bayshore with Dad. She is impressed by Garth and Joyce having matching sweaters?
Carolyn saw a private surgeon for a 50-minute consultation about her shoulder, and after cortisone shots, can now sleep most nights. She remembers that 40 years ago when working with adolescents, the mental health issues were already apparent, so this is not a new problem. But youth today are experiencing real trauma.
Joyce has a sweater collection including one more like Garth’s than Garth’s sweater. She will be travelling next week, but with no sweaters.
Jeannette is flying to the Philippines tonight but was looking for her passport! She’ll be gone for 3 weeks. She was happy to thank our speaker this morning and did an excellent job.
Blair went to Grand Prairie, and realized there is nothing there, but anyways, it was for work.
Mary Lou enjoyed Colin James at the Commodore. She attended the Richmond Chamber lunar new year event. A shout-out to Lindsey who is presenting a poetry evening in Massachusetts, and posters are all over town. Oscar’s birthday party is on Saturday, with tubing, then a pinata and friends at their house.
Amanda had her birthday in Whistler last week, with dinner and a spa, and in fact has had lots of dinners, the best of which was Taco Tuesday at the Flying Beaver. Today she had a cancellation, so she is going up to Cypress. (Ed. note: Did she get the memo about the snow?)
Henry is not sick; he has asthma and can’t talk.
Pat is booked with Susan to the District 5040 conference in Terrace, flying up and staying at the Best Western. Her cold virus is finally almost gone.
Larry survived surgery # 16, and feels he isn’t tough anymore (we disagree). He is excited about this one because it was mostly cosmetic with the top of his head reshaped, looking a little more normal. He has one more surgery to do and he is the doctor’s prize. Being married to an American means that this weekend Super Bowl rules the household. But it’s all about the game, so they’re going to a friend’s house to enjoy both game and food.
Micheal had jet lag for a week, is busy at work, and hosted an event for the City of Richmond. For the first time they did a grazing station with lots of appetizers and cocktails for over 200 people – something new and it went well. He is building a new house, having issues with BC hydro, bylaws, etc. He thinks the city is getting too green. He’s looking after events while Bobby is at Whistler.
Judy is back from her Central American cruise which had some glitches with rough water and winds keeping them out of two ports. She wouldn’t go back, even though they went on some excursions. The ship was great, and the food was fabulous. She has Jack on Tuesdays, and he is so excited, thanking his daddy for letting him go to Grandma’s.
Debbie M. was on a cruise, too – to Granville Island on the water taxi and back with her granddaughter, getting off at the next port. She is paddling and working this week, but had to quit one of her teams, as she is too busy. She injured her thumb and is going for treatment and hoping it’s nothing.
Kal thanks us for the Paul Harris stone. He says “go 49ers” for the Superbowl.
Bill congratulates Gordon on his 37 years. He recalls that Dalbir, Garth and Margaret are also long-time Rotarians and the only members who have been so longer than him. One of his friends is in Palliative care and it is so sad when one of your peers is dying.
Dalbir didn’t get to do much with kids when they were growing up but is spending time at gymnastics with the two-year-old. He was retired for two weeks but is constantly getting called to mentor people to become partners at small firms, and has trained many accountants in the city, which is an interesting, unexpected twist. The apprenticeship model needs to come back with force. There is no one in the offices downtown. Mental health is not a new issue, but we are in a better position now that there isn’t as much stigma.
Garth says the lawyers training program PLTC is still online even though the court is now in person. So much is missed online.
Peter says his garage door opener is fixed and he didn’t have to take over Jane’s side. Now the dishwasher has an F10 code, which means the motherboard is done, an $800 fix, so the question is do we fix the old one or buy a new one? Our clubs list of projects completed and paid for this year shows we only spent $30 000, so we need to support projects more quickly – and need more applications. Perhaps the Firefighters Golf Tournament may be an opportunity.
Chris M. says there was an article about her son, in Restobiz, an online newsletter for the Food Industry, about pivoting in your field, but following your passion. Her daughter is about two weeks away from her due date and is hoping to have the baby after Lunar New Year so it will be born in the Year of the Dragon – both parents were born in the Year of the Dragon and were Dixon Dragons in elementary school. Chris’ key entry for the garage was fixed and the code is a controversial mathematical pattern, in reverse.
John went to the Gilmore pancake breakfast and saw that Peachy was showing off her making and flipping of 6 pancakes-at-a-time skills. Jeannette was laughing at John, slopping his batter everywhere. It was a good auction meeting, Debbie.
Sam started gymnastics a year and a half ago, to learn a cartwheel, but is now leaning to do backflips on the trampoline – he wouldn’t have predicted that projectory! Garth notices that no one talked about Sam’s sweater.
Bob advises that to perfect your pancake flipping skills, you need to go every Tuesday, noticing that the worst flipper was Chris B. whose pancakes went everywhere, and even she made progress. He was in Whistler for 5 days, with no snow, although Gavin and his cousin came to ski, to the tune of $300 ticket (and you had to be off the mountain by 3 p.m.). He’s going out for dinner on Saturday to celebrate Gavin’s one year anniversary at work, so hopefully Gavin gets his bonus.
