sergeant  At Arms Tidbits

Mary Lou had the best weekend celebrating Oscar's first Birthday. Especially fun organizing 80+ year olds on Zoom. Don't we know.

Kal was not Lavina

Peter is looking forward to the flower basket sales.

Elena did a presentation at the Semiamhoo Club not otherwise specified. Congratulated Peter on the basket sales.

Marg has had a massive rat infestation that decimated the tulip bulbs. Sounds like the baited traps weren't working so they will be replaced with Marie Antoinette traps. Don't lose your head! Maybe try some cake.

Judy found a fly with antennas but no rats on her floor. Spencer has an ant infestation. Call Peter's Pest Control. Sleep over with Grandsons was a success and they are master Lego builders.

Sam spent his time lowering expectations. Had a great weekend with Justin, Pizza and Rom Coms.

Dick explained how he can identify with the staff who are having to deal with the power outages in Texas as that was one of his jobs at BC Hydro. We were all fortunate he was there when we needed him. A lot of anger when there are three days without power.

Chris P. had tragic news about a close friends son who committed suicide. Life goes on so planning a birthday party for Maddie and Mitch has had his third solo flight and has a pilot addiction.

Melinda reports that John's back is seriously bothering him again so he can barely walk. Fortunately the spinal fusion is intact but Drs. still exploring the cause.

Debbie M. has been trying to help Samia buy a place but the one they wanted had 16 offers and sold for $175,000 over asking price. There is no inventory.

Gordon said there was no good or bad news and therefore no news but there turned out to be news. They are replacing the windows in his building and there is filming going on at Britannia Shipyards.

Bobby took some goodies to ICBC offices to thank them for their contribution to the toy drive. Wife and Daughter took him to shop for some clothes and sent him off on his own to buy polo shirts. They apparently spent in the hundreds. Banquet hall eerily quiet.

Ipad Ron sees the coming of spring in the baskets sales and is doing his 8,000 - 10,000 steps per day.

We got a new stove from our friends at Trail Appliances.

Kathy picked up her bike on family day. Barton had his wisdom teeth out no nursing required - Rachel disappointed?

Susan reporting live but cold from the Costco parking lot so covered with a $12 blanket. Ryan built a snow fort at 16 and agreed to go with mom and dad on a snow walk. Brother announced he is engaged and getting married this weekend on Zoom. Mom is stable.

Joyce continues to have quiet ground hog days.

Bill was happy to see Shelly. Weren't we all.

Dalbir went to Le Crocodile for dinner and the restaurant was busy. His wedding reception was held at the Riverside Banquet Hall. Apparently all the accounting firms are hiring and a better dressed Bobby could get a job right away.

Sandra has really enjoyed the dinner and wine pairings offered by wineries and with break out rooms these events last up to three hours.

Pat said Chris P. was 55 years young. Has had rats in the back yard for years. The rats are courteous though as they eat the poison and go next door to die. (That is better than your attic or walls - the smell). Pat also has ants and Peter Pest Control says there is a new chemical for ants that worked really well for him.

Carolyn finished her two weeks of isolation with grandchildren 1 & 3 and thanked Joyce for the groceries. Something about leftovers.

Debbie S. reiterated the need for volunteers on May 1. Loved the snow and walks in the snow. She has also been gardening and channeled Edward Scissorhands to experience the joy of hedge trimming. Recommends watching Big Sky and Firefly. Or maybe John does. B - I - N - G - E.

Our own Sam who was better than just alright. Apparently he was born and aged then went to New York to baby sit his brother and become a barber but ended up being a speech language pathologist - if  I heard correctly. I also think I heard that Sam likes force ghost but dislikes demon eye?????
Sam's works with students who have issues with speech disorders such as fluency, sound disorder, voice and resonance, and bubble prison. Helping those with a different gender then assigned modify the sound of their voices.
Those with the disorder have persistent deficits with social communication and interactions and restrictive and/or repetitive patterns of thought and behaviour.
Henry Cavendish who discovered hydrogen (wikipedia checked) was also first documented autism case. He avoided social interaction, ate the same food and was an obsessive in his scientific pursuits. Asperger in mid 20th century focused on higher functioning boys and created the first diagnostic criteria. Leo Canner thought it only occurred in boys subject to refrigerator parents.
Diagnoses of Autism has increased from 1/1,000 in 1995 to 1/68 in 2017. The DSM V has consolidated three previous definitions of Autism in the DSM IV into one. Many parents were encouraging an Asperger diagnoses in their children because of the way characters with Asperger's were portrayed on TV. He then described how he deals with expressive/receptive issues such as writing speaking listening and writing by using alternative or augmented communication. Also social language issues such as the hidden rules the reason's for certain language and expectations, and developing verbal and non verbal skills. He said he also dealt with executive functioning which is located in  the frontal cortex (sadly developing only until 25) which controls self monitoring, shifting focus, initiation and inhibition. Sam helps his students learn to use these features more appropriately. Sam then urged us to accept neurodiversity in that autism is not a genetic error but is natural and to be celebrated.

He left us with this quote:

"The world needs different kinds of minds to work together."

Meanderings

Given this is Black History Month in my history class last semester we were given the link below that shows all of the slave ships leaving the West Coast of Africa and arriving in the Western Hemisphere. Almost 20 times as many slaves were shipped to the Caribbean and South America than North America. Also more slave were shipped out of the East Coast of Africa to the middle East and India then to the Americas. This is an amazing Map. Click on a couple of the ships to see the make up of the cargo and the destination.

The Atlantic Slave Trade in Two Minutes - Bing video

A more positive story if you do not get the Vancouver Sun is the Chatham All Stars. The 1934 Chatham Coloured All-Stars baseball team broke colour barriers as the first black team to win an Ontario Baseball Association title. The team included star players such as Wilfred "Boomer" Harding, Earl "Flat" Chase, Ferguson Jenkins Sr. (Father of the Hall of Famer) and other talented players. There was often discrimination both on and off the field resulting in situations ranging from questionable umpire decisions during games to being turned away from hotels in the area and having to stay in nearby towns. Threats of violence were common as well as deliberate injuries to the team members, stone throwing and taunts during games. On a cool October day in 1934, two baseball teams met in Guelph to decide the Ontario championship. It was a tight game, but the All-Stars edged ahead 3-2 in the 11th inning. A leadoff strikeout in the bottom of the 11th put Chatham two outs away from the title. And then something unusual happened. Here’s how a headline described it in the Chatham Daily News: “Chatham Ahead When Game Was Halted by Darkness.” And, below that: “Stars were leading 3-2 when hostilities were halted and score reverted”. However it was only 4:30 in the afternoon and would have still been light enough to finish the game. The score was reset to 0 - 0 but Chatham won the next day 13 - 7.

TODAYS CHUCKLEs

Given the number of anniversaries this month I thought these two would suit the month.

A husband and wife in their sixties were coming up on their 40th wedding anniversary. Knowing his wife loved antiques, he bought a beautiful old brass oil lamp for her. When she unwrapped it, a genie appeared. He thanked them and gave each of them one wish. The wife wished for an all expenses paid, first class, around the world cruise with her husband. Shazam! Instantly she was presented with tickets for the entire journey, plus expensive side trips, dinners, shopping, etc. The husband, however, wished he had a female companion who was 30 years younger. Shazam! Instantly he turned 93 years old.

Two secrets to keep your marriage brimming 1. Whenever you're wrong, admit it, 2. Whenever you're right, shut up.

Next week covid jokes because it is time we started laughing in it's face!
