As I was in the Peace Portal Golf course parking lot this all may not be entirely accurate or complete. In any event thanks to Gordon for once again stepping in when I stepped out.
Joyce had a nice trip to Sechelt with her brother in law.
Amanda has been in and out of the virtual meeting but stayed long enough to tell us about the bungee jump. Was asked if she wanted to touch the water and agreed with her fingers. Turned out she was in and out of the water before she knew it and managed to have her shirt and bra stay in the water. I think it was called Wild Water and know why.
Bob confirmed that Gavin is moving and a new puppy is moving in. Power point by the kids some years ago did not convince Bob to get a puppy but now the cavapooh is moving in. Zara may be some help.
Ron is enjoying his farm and has free apples. Went to Mount Pleasant to look at the murals and ended up having some brews in Mount Pleasant. Did not say if it was flights or pints of beer. Debbie S. and Iqbal volunteered to pick them for the food bank.
I was reporting direct from the parking lot at Peace Portal and gave Garth a chance to get his attendance taken.
Carolyn is getting the dues processed bit by bit. Kal says take as much time as you need.
Elena has had good lunches with friends this last week including Gordon.
Larry has been having birthday celebrations, it sounds like daily and has enjoyed his two week holiday and looking forward to returning to work.
Dick woke up today and the club cheered. He also visited with friends which I think also includes all of us.
Gordon is enjoying the weather as they say in GOT winter is coming. Enjoyed his lunch with Elena and discussions of the Mount Pleasant Philippine club where a member is an ADG.
Deb T. is getting ready for sons wedding while Drew is getting ready for surgery. Anxious about how the Delta variant may affect the return to school.
Chris B. started her report and my screen froze. It must have taken some time because she was still talking when my screen unfroze. Something about excited to be back, slept for two weeks on the couch I think because grandchildren came to visit. Unless Malcolm was sleeping on the couch.
Judy had 5 grand kids including Chris' and drank coffee instead of wine. Vowed not to make that mistake again. Kids had a great time playing together. Taking Granddaughters to high tea. Took girls shopping and modelled all the clothes they tried on which included dancing. Too cute. Ate at Grandpa's favourite, Earls at Lansdowne. Off to Oliver for the usual summer trip.
Debbie S. never got a dog until after the kids left home even though daughter wanted one. Never been forgiven for that omission. Off to the West Coast Trail.
Over to you Gordon.
Mel is experiencing the Olympic Withdrawal Syndrome but delighted to hear that a friend who is living with cancer and who had contracted COVID has survived – even without vaccination;
Marg regrets that the Paralympic games do not seem to attract the level of coverage that the summer games did;
Chris M. tells us her MGB will soon be zooming down the route to Versailles – as a French gentleman has bought it – it’ll be crated and on it’s way over there this afternoon;
Bobby G. is tackling his rat infestation by dismantling his garden…seems rather drastic!
Debbie M. went to Vernon; came back early and smoke-ridden;
Kal attended the NFL Hall of Fame unveiling;
MLM, with all the puppy stories appearing this morning, suggested that we have a puppy club party - maybe we could invite Roto?
Sam is back from Tofino after lots of surfing and eating;
Bill welcomed Kayla, Alicia and Rebecca through the border; now he and Shelley are off to Stockholm to meet up with Mya (our previous exchange student) and attend her wedding! Time flies, eh?

Our Speaker, Jeff Golby, CEO of ACTS for Water
Jeff was welcomed and introduced by Gord.
No stranger to our club, we have previously supported ACTS in their work to bring clean water to areas of Uganda. ACTS for Canada is part of a 30-year old international charitable organization and based in Steveston village. It has brought clean water, using the gravity feed method, to many areas of Uganda. Our previous donation was used to bring water to a large village, including hand washing stations and sanitation. The students are now making soap themselves – which they both use and sell in the local market – since the appearance of COVID..
The new project, which we are also now supporting, will do likewise to a large village where water is some distance away – and even then is dirty and disease-ridden. Teenage children attending the local school, often have to forego their lessons in order to trek up the mountain to a water source. It’s the only way they can provide for themselves and their families. The new system will bring that water down to a 30 minute walk instead of a 2 hour each way climb. Future enhancements hope to bring this down to 10 minutes each way.
Students’ learning suffers due to this interruption in their lessons. Jeff is mounting a fundraiser/awareness event – like the one we supported previously – at Garry Point Park next month; so book the date: September 12th 2021 at 1 p.m.
“We’ll start promoting it more heavily in August. It’ll be great to get people together like this. If anyone has a contact at McMath - particularly I thought the Interac club - it’d be great to have them promote it. We have posters available that we’ll print if they want as well.” [We should also see if we can get our Interact club in Burnett involved – Ed..]
Our donation towards this Nyambaare Primary School project is $9,000 and we will be arranging a cheque presentation and publicity shortly. We look forward to another great turnout on September 12th (we had over 100 last time!) to support this life-giving project.
Christine Marin thanked Jeff for explaining it all to us.
Thanks Again to Gordon for filling in.

How many of you knew someone who stuttered? Me too. How many thought it was because of parenting or other nurture issues? Me too. Dr. Sam already probably knew this and others more enlightened then me. Turns out it is genetic. According to Scientific American Freud labelled it an "oral-sadistic conflict". Stuttering is a disruption in the flow of speech but the physical struggle and emotional effects had led to wrongly attribute the condition to defects of the tongue, problems with cognition, emotional trauma, or nervousness, even forcing left handed children to become right handed and poor parenting. Recent research has shown that stuttering is biological in nature and is a neurodevelopmental disorder. In the 70 million people world wide it appears early in life when children are learning to talk. Those who stutter have differences in neural connectivity, changes in how their speech and motor systems are integrated and alterations in the activity of crucial neurotransmitters such as dopamine. Researchers have identified four genes that dramatically increase the likelihood of this speech problem. This is inspiring new treatments including drugs and brain stimulation. But the goal of treatment has shifted to some extent to accepting and managing the stutter. One individual interviewed for the article attributed dealing with his mental stress critical to his treatment success. There is a National Stuttering Association and the conventions are welcome because attendees are no different from anyone there - they all stutter. Stuttering affects about 5% of children of whom 80% recover completely by about 7 or 8 leaving about 1% with a stuttering issue. Famous people who overcame their stuttering include King George VI (King's Speech), Joe Biden, Samuel Jackson, Emily Blunt, Marilyn Monroe, and James Earl Jones. But also included in the article were interviews with a physicist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a Veterinarian, and Medical Doctors. The Veterinarian interviewed said he stuttered yesterday, today, and hopes he will stutter tomorrow as it will mean he is still alive. As our own Dick Wagner likes to say, "I woke up this morning."

So Christine M. is turning 70 this year and many of us have or will if we are lucky so here is a joke for 70 year olds.
A 70-year-old woman chose to remain overnight in a costly hotel as a treat for her birthday. The following morning, she was appalled when the desk clerk gave her a bill for $250.00. She requested to know why the charge was too high.
"It's a nice hotel, but the rooms certainly aren't worth $250.00 for just an overnight stay! I didn't even have breakfast," she told the clerk.
The clerk clarified that $250.00 is the standard rate. At that point, the older lady insisted on talking with the manager.
The manager showed up and explained that the hotel "has an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference center which are available for use."
"But I didn't use them," the old woman said.
"Well, they are here, and you could have," he replied.
The manager proceeded with that she could likewise have seen one of the in-hotel shows for which the hotel is famous.
"We have the best entertainers from the world over performing here," he said.
"But I didn't go to any of those shows," she said.
The manager replied, "Well, we have them, and you could have."
Regardless of what facility he recommended, the older lady would just answer, "But I didn't use it!"
The manager then countered with his standard reaction. After several minutes of contending with him, she chose to pay.
The manager was shocked when she gave the check to him. "But madam, this check is for only $50.00," he said.
"That is right. I charged you $200.00 for sleeping with me," the old lady replied.
"But I didn't!" the manager shouted.
"Well, too bad, I was here, and you could have."
