Speaker

Rotary is a family.  Dean Crain was Bill’s ‘brother’, charming, thoughtful and energetic.  Although Dean knew early on in life that he was susceptible to Huntington’s, he never changed his style.  This award came about years ago to honour him.  Chris P. met Dean, who was going to run a half marathon and as she had the same intention, the synergy set the events in motion.

Four criteria for the Dean Crain Award are honesty, courage, integrity and determination.  This year’s recipient is honest, states their ideas clearly without fear of speaking out and apologizes for any ill will.  With courage, they don’t share their challenges with anyone and deal with them privately and courageously find the best way forward for all concerned.

This person has integrity more than most, sticks to the four-way test in every aspect of their life, upholding the values of rotary by offering assistance in many ways.  Their determination is seen in the many volunteer opportunities they undertake and stick with, even when some might think it’s a lost cause, and has done this consistently throughout the years.  Every recipient says they’re stunned, and ask why me?  But this year we truly believe that this award will make a difference in this person’s life.

Congratulations to Susan Ness!

SERGEANT At Arms Tidbits

Chris B. just returned from California after spending four weeks there for Christmas.

Amanda congratulates Susan, Pat, and Chris P. She had a great holiday, super chill, and went to Harrison Hot Springs with the cat. Busy now that she’s back at work. Came to the meeting last week by mistake, so didn’t come in person this week.

Chris P. hasn’t been around lately. Struggling with and recovering from a broken heart over the loss of her dad. Thanksgiving was hard, but Christmas was easierShe’s paid her dues and is working in the background, so she’s not going anywhere.

Lawrence Good Christmas. Christmas featured four families of four staying together over a few days. It felt like Home Alone—except no one got to go to Paris, and no one was home alone. He hopes Chris B’s family is okay after the California fires. His brother lives in LA.

Chris M. Dismantled her piano and avoided losing an eye by loosening the wires before cutting themShe now has a box full of piano keys just waiting for a project.

Mary Lou noted how special Christmas is with a four-year-old. Going virtual until March, as Oscar has arts umbrella on Thursday mornings and off to Science World today.

John Spent Christmas in the Okanagan with four of their kids, eight grandchildren, three spouses, Sandy, and a partridge in a pear tree. Watched Home Alone and made pancakes on Christmas morning. Grandkids all won MVPs with special belts, but John got “Look what you did, you stupid jerk!” (Probably from Sandy, could have been anyone.)

Dalbir congratulated Chris P. on receiving a professional award, which was posted on Instagram.

Chris P Pt 2 She was surprised but said it summed her up well. Chris was asked to appear on a podcast next Friday and was talked into it.

Dalbir cont’d had a smaller Christmas this year with 27 people, down from 50. His grandchildren are growing up; the oldest carried a book and was promoted to big sister again, bringing the total to eight grandchildren.

Blair enjoyed quiet time and attended Oliver Twist. It was his first live theatre experience since his own starring role as Simba in The Lion King, off-broadway, in his living room – but he had amazing homemade costumes. (search words on youtube "inebriated lion.")

Marg hosted Ruth’s 90th birthday party, which was a cozy, intimate 32 people.  Dinner featured Yorkshire pudding and the wrong kind of T-Bone (thankfully everyone is ok). Ben went on strike at the airport but told the manager he didn’t need more money.

Judy had the Cruikshank dinner before Christmas with 42 people and a small gift exchange. On Christmas Day, Spencer hosted 26 people. She went to Palm Springs for a week at her sister’s place. Hosted Pat Quinn’s wife and daughter for New Year’s Eve. Pat’s wife’s hockey stories were the highlight.

Chris P pt 3.  Judy notes Chris P. helped Warren, who bought out his ex-wife. Chris P. was patient and calming throughout the process. (Which no one in the club believes).

Kal wore a Christmas gift shirt which Chris M. had admired, and thanked Brian for joining Rotary. Kal will now be the second-last to pay dues.

Bill congratulated Susan and admired Chris M.’s use of "gobsmacked. Reminisced about Sam not being named MVP (#itsokreallydoesnteventmatter) despite being the best player while the captain awarded himself. Went to PWHL where an arena full of 8–12-year-old girls singing Taylor Swift songs. The game was sold out.

Susan thanked everyone again for the award. She had a nice Christmas and went to Gateway Theatre to see Oliver Twist. Sang at a Christmas concert at church. Enjoyed Christmas dinner at 75 West Coast Grill—a fabulous buffet, so no cooking was needed – and saw Larry and Steve walk through the door for the later seating.

Michael experienced a big change as he moved to a new house on December 27th. Spent Christmas at their old home, where they’d lived for over seven years. Told the kids about the move but didn’t explain much. Christmas dinner was normal, but on Boxing Day, the older kids took the younger ones out, and they packed in one day. The move on the 27th included new furniture at the new house. The kids cried for an hour upon seeing the mess but settled down. They had a slumber party on the floor for the last night. Movers completed the process on the 27th, and they’re now settled. New Year’s included events at the hall. His resolution is to lose the 12 pounds gained last year. (ED: not edited to reflect power of full speech)

Jeannette congratulated Susan, her mentor. On January 2nd, she came early for the meeting, was surprised to find no cars parked at either venue.  Was about to leave and saw Amanda also in her car with no meeting to go to. Noted that Brian’s application is proof she’s doing her job.

Elena shares a birthday with Susan and is proud of her. Thanks everyone for the Christmas breakfast at the Marriott. Had a quiet Christmas as her three sons are married and all over the place.

Danny had a peaceful and solemn holiday. He meditated and exercised in preparation for an upcoming dental mission. Contacting all his volunteers and upgraded security in his house with sound alarms and a dog that barks at intruders. Will be away for more than two months. Refused to give us the address or the security code.

Brian shared that this was his third Christmas post-divorce and the first that felt good again. Enjoyed heartwarming chats and moments with uni aged daughter

Debbie T. had a happy but bittersweet Christmas. Bought her granddaughter a bike, but her feet were too short to reach the pedals - not Debbie's the granddaughters. Had a quiet New Year’s, trying to keep her dogs calm during fireworks with thundershirts and medication. Both Debbie and her dog have good hearts after her dog underwent a $1,300 examination following a neutering operation during which his heart stopped. He may need to be neutered again.  Debbie passed her test. (ED: I have no thoughts on how to best edit the last two sentences.)
