Speaker

Peter Update: We had last night’s gala meeting.  The Fireside meeting on Monday was led by Brian Cole, a round table, where everyone introduced themselves citing their joining date, why they joined and a memorable highlight.  We may do this more often and invite guests to entice them to join.
District 5040 Convention is at the River Rock, room rate is only $149/night.  April 25-27.
World Conference is in Calgary, closest ever to us.  Several are going.
PETS is now gone from the Seattle site.  The new acronym is PELS, just for our district, but we could invite members from outside the district.

Amanda Gala Update:
  • Get your basket items in.  You can either contribute small individual items or put together a full basket yourself.  Give the completed baskets to Amanda, but the items to Marg.
  • Bring two bottles of wine to a morning meeting.
  • Amanda will send out another email about the best basket items.
  • We need someone to lead the volunteers for the 2026 Auction.
  • We need sponsors for some remaining categories.
  • Gift certificates go to Debbie S. when she returns.
  • April 7 is basket making at the Funeral Home at 6 p.m.  A signup sheet will be coming.
  • Cutoff for all entries into the Givergy database is April 3.  Get your items in as soon as possible.
  • Let Sandra know about your tables/ticket sales and let Debbie M. know if you need a table for 12.
  • Live Auction Items – we currently have 8, but need 10, so if you have another idea, please let Amanda know.  Experiences are very attractive.
  • Hours are the same for the gala as in previous years – 6 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.
  • Menu will be slightly changed, with appetizers: tempura prawns, chicken bites, bruschetta, caprese salad skewers – all being served before sitting.  Dinner is: salads green and pasta, prime rib, mushroom pasta, cilantro fish, a chicken dish? roasted vegetables, assortment of breads and balsamic on the table, mini cannoli and cheesecakes for dessert.
  • Games will be 50/50, Heads and Tails, and a Balloon Game.
  • If you don’t have time to buy items for the auction, you can let Chris know, and she’ll shop for you.

SERGEANT At Arms Tidbits

Mary Lou had her 70th birthday on the weekend, and Lindsey flew in as a surprise, during Oscar’s birthday and made Mary Lou scream and cry.  The evening at Chambar was wonderful including a fundraiser for the Binner’s project.   Lindsey stayed until Tuesday.  As per Judy, it’s a birthday day, week, month and year.  Thanks for dinner at the gala meeting last night.  Soon Oscar is in Kindergarten and Mary Lou will be attending Rotary in person.

Bill is on Zoom because Shelley has an appointment, and he will be back in person next week.

Amanda says this is the 5th consecutive rotary meeting.  She is leaving Saturday for Saskatchewan to take care of her godsons, 6 (the wild animal) and 8 (who loves playing chess, is thoughtful and quiet) – quite a pair.

Dalbir got to train people, hired 40-100 people each year, and hired Jill in 1998, who came to work with him after a cold call, had a great career and made partner.  About 2002 she was a world expert in security firms and travels the world training tax, and they are having dinner together today as she’s in town.

Jeannette arrived Saturday from the Philippines, was in Thailand, stayed in Korea for 15 hours, but it took 2 hours to get to the town, and only had time for shopping, needed more check-in luggage.  Thailand is known for the red district night life and they took 86-year-old mom and several gay relatives, with her and her husband.  The last night husband really wants to go the red district, but Jeanette wanted to go to the spa and the gays didn’t want to go, so in the end they all went, but only on the streets, so he could take a video.  Concerts and street food all night long.  Street workers are there, but you can’t take a video of them.  They rode on the single motor vehicle - tuktuk, with loud music, so fast.  Last night Peachy was in emergency, with high blood pressure, and is flying to the Philippines for 3 months and will give cash as she can’t be at the gala.

Joyce says her youngest son is coming Saturday, first time for a while.  Her oldest son (victim of California fires) just moved into a condo, with nothing, it’s good news and so grateful for the people who have surrounded him, he’s learned about gratitude, and the corps of army engineers have been in to clear his house of toxins, but he still has green grass, an oak tree and mailbox.

Micheal says both brothers are in England, so holding down the fort.  4th night of rotary this week, so having second thoughts about being president elect-elect.  Having a banquet for 400 soccer girls this week for their annual awards fundraiser.  Going to Whistler next week.

Chris M.  Rod’s house is on the market – 6415 London Road if you know anyone who’s looking.  We’ve already had 10 viewings and some seconds.  Fingers crossed it sells soon.  So, with that on hold, she has time to get back to the gym.

Debbie T. says Spring Break on her calendar is empty which is exciting.  Lots of rotary stuff being done, has lots of new stuff from her friend in the storage locker still.  It has been 3 years cleaning out the house of the stuff and the children have finally moved into a new home, so this is the last leg and we have benefited from all the items they have donated.   Busy at school board, meeting with ministry of infrastructure and new minister of education, working hard on city centre schools, with not much land left, let alone the money as purse strings are held by the province – it’s been a 10–15-year journey.

Chewy was at the Fireside meeting, hearing stories that you don’t get to hear at the meetings.  Loves hearing the stories each week, but hearing the rotary stories are more in depth.  Mother-in-law is visiting since Sunday, came for his daughter’s choral fest which was last night, elementary school choirs singing, including Fix You by Cold Play, but then grandma was sick, but happy to be there.  She was going home today, lives in Port Alberni, but there was a slide on the only road so she will be with them a little while longer.

Moe did Food Bank on Friday.  Monday did Fireside, a great event, and thanks to Brian for facilitating and Mike for hosting.  Son was coaching last night, a nail biter.  Ramadan has started, two dinners this weekend, basically you wait for the dinners.

John says for lawyers professional mentoring is more one on one, and he still keeps in touch with his mentor and partner.  As an articling student, he was invited to the trial, to takes notes, while his mentor was cross examining, but he was so engaged, he forgot to take notes, so was yelled at to “take notes”.  Mary Lou turned 70 and his youngest granddaughter turns 3 in April and John turns 73 in April.  His granddaughter guessed he was turning 4.  So, he’s 7 decades to the month older than her.

Peter was thinking about his experience in the sex trade.  Amsterdam is famous for the red door district, but no photos are allowed but Peter took a couple of photos, especially of a large of a lady behind the glass who became foul, so they got out of there fast.  That’s his sex trade story.  They adopted a new dog from Korea, 4 years old, big attitude, but small dog, so full of life, Jane took him to the vet who also thought he was active – looking for puppy Prozac.  The dog loves to watch TV, barks at anything, including yellow cars, they as they are colour blind, he is just barking at anything flashy.  But he’s filling their lives with excitement, God love us to have animals. His granddaughter will be at the ballroom with the soccer association, and is trying out for the White Caps, has had a meeting, but for a 13-year-old you basically lose your family for travelling all over North America so she’s not sure she wants to make that commitment, although may not be chosen anyways.  It would be a big deal to give up family and friends for soccer.

MEANDERINGS

From Wikipedia

International Women's Day (IWD) commemorates women's fight for equality and liberation along with the women's rights movement. International Women's Day gives focus to issues such as gender equalityreproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.[3][4] Spurred by the universal female suffrage movement, International Women's Day originated from labor movements in Europe and North America during the early 20th century.[5][6][7]

The earliest version reported was a "Woman's Day" organized by the Socialist Party of America in New York City on February 28, 1909. In solidarity with them, communist activist and politician Clara Zetkin proposed the celebration of "Working Women's Day", approved at the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference in Copenhagen, albeit with no set date;[8] the following year saw the first demonstrations and commemorations of International Women's Day across Europe. Vladimir Lenin declared March 8 as International Women's Day in 1922 to honour the women's role in the 1917 Russian Revolution;[9] it was subsequently celebrated on that date by the socialist movement and communist countries. The holiday became a mainstream global holiday following its promotion by the United Nations in 1977.[10]
International Women's Day is a public holiday in several countries. The UN observes the holiday in connection with a particular issue, campaign, or theme in women's rights.
