Speaker

Alex, Julia and Parm and other volunteers put in an incredible effort, and shared with us results of last years Firemen's Fundraiser Golf Tournament.
Last year, this tournament raised an impressive $66,000 for youth mental health. As part of the event, we showed a video highlighting the impact of the fundraiser and the importance of proactive mental health care. One key takeaway? We all need to be proactive when it comes to mental health—having a counselor or someone to reach out to can make all the difference.
A huge thank you to Susan Ness, Chris Pugh, and Melinda Newman for their support in making this event a success!
Initially, there was an attempt to partner with the school district, but unfortunately, we hit a roadblock. However, that didn’t stop us! We turned to the Foundry Foundation, which provides counseling services for youth, and they proposed a much-needed Step-Up and Step-Down program—a follow-up initiative for youth discharged from the hospital who still need continued support. After discussion and consideration of alternative support we decided to assist them with hiring another counsellor.

Of the funds raised:
  • $50,000 was allocated to hiring a full-time counselor for two years. With this, the Richmond Hospital Foundation and other partners helped fund 0.6 of a counselor position.
  • $10,000 was set aside for day trips.
With this additional support, there are now three full-time counselors working with youth, plus one counselor handling triage. This expansion ensures more kids can receive the care they need.
Now, looking ahead:
  • This year’s event is set for May 29, 2025, and will follow the same setup as last year.
  • We’re expecting 40–50 firefighter volunteers to help make the day a success.
  • We’re currently following up with sponsors, and we have a long list of generous supporters.
  • And most importantly—we’re asking for your help in sponsoring lunch for the event.
This tournament is making a real difference in the lives of youth in our community, and we are incredibly grateful for everyone who has contributed. Let’s keep the momentum going and continue supporting this vital cause!

SERGEANT At Arms Tidbits

John missed the Gala meeting last night because of multiple trips through the tunnel already that day.

Blair’s brother has been visiting and watching football. They also went to the Continental Restaurant.

Mary Lou was stuck in a frozen car in the dark but made it to the meeting on Zoom. She is sick and on her way to Arts Umbrella meeting.

Carolyn cannot figure out how to use the video feature on zoom. She is at home because she takes her grandchild to school. She is still fighting with the insurance company over the damage to her house.

Amanda had a fun meeting last night. She went to NARV for Persian food and also dined at Gordon Ramsay Steakhouse.

Chris P. is going to a conference in Whistler called the "Be the Better Broker" conference. The Turning Point House for women is almost complete. After digging through the water pipe, workers also accidentally damaged the hydro power transformer.

Joyce is catching up on all the things she should have done in November. She plans to put her overwhelming to-do list "in the freezer" for now.

Chewy’s daughter wants to join the basketball team. They played basketball together, but neither of them is a great shooter, so Chewy taught her about rebounding instead.

Marg not up early in front of the TV as the tennis season had ended. She recently finished Dine Out Vancouver with an excellent meal. Asked for help with the pancake breakfast at Gilmore on Tuesday.

Debbie M. has been enjoying Dine Out Vancouver but has also been busy exercising and eating fewer carbs. She has been doing chair yoga all month and has made great progress. Marg demonstrated some moves.

Judy has been out every night enjoying fun activities, including dining out, book club, and watching a wide range of kids' sports.

Kal gave kudos to a young kid who organized defibrillators in all schools and really stirred the pot with the initiative.

Bill has two small dogs that he walks all the time. One of his neighbours dogs is a troublemaker. When Bill was getting on the elevator to walk his dogs, the neighbour’s dog also got on the elevator by itself – leading to chaos. Bill got off with his dogs and sent the neighbour back up the elevator on its own.

Sam went to Seymour and had a lot of fun skiing instead of snowboarding. He wore two pairs of socks and struggled to take them off afterward. He also took photos that looked like action shots but were actually still images, with friends throwing snow to make it look live.

Chris B. drove in the dark on fast-moving streets with no visible sunrise. She is scheduled for cataract surgery next week.

Pat’s granddaughter is turning 16 and is looking forward to taking her driving test. Her grandson has a virus, so there has been no hockey to watch. Pat went bowling yesterday, and her shoulder is getting better.

Brian coaches the high school curling team and has signed the team up for regional curling competitions. His son Adam is also playing. Meredith was in town to renew her nose piercing.

Melinda had the granddaughters over for the entire weekend, and they completely wore her out. She was exhausted. Willow wants to be a famous singer but is too shy to perform in front of people.

Sandra shared that Brittany once dreamed of being an Olympic figure skater but not in the competitive Olympics. Sandra recently went to Archer for Dine Out Vancouver and had an excellent meal.

Peachy is happy to be back after a long trip to Egypt. She spent months traveling by train and cruising to Aswan and Luxor. She admired the ancient history written on the walls and also visited the Red Sea. She traveled to the Israel-Palestine border and noted that the tourists were very safe. She felt beautiful as the only Filipina in the group.

Jeanette is going to Thailand for a week. She recently completed district training for grants.

Elena is leaving in two days for a dental mission. She has been busy organizing the new consulate for the Philippines.

Larry has been busy getting a dental implant adjusted and handing out envelopes for Chinese New Year. He also had a lovely dinner at Eleanor’s.

Gordon bumped into Bob Blacker and was invited to Steveston to induct a new member. Membership in the organization has fluctuated a lot over the years.

Bobby was in Toronto last week, where it was -15 degrees. He helped his daughter with renovations. He also thanked Eleanor for an amazing dinner and attended the Richmond Cares breakfast.

Peter shared that his friend owns a tree moving company and was moving and transplanting trees for the City of Richmond. Although he was told everything had been checked out, they accidentally took out the fiber optic system between Richmond and Vancouver.

MEANDERINGS

Sorry coffee drinkers, tea is the most consumed beverage on the planet after water. We drink an estimated 45 billion gallons of tea a year. One type of tea can wholesale at $330 for a 12 ounce cake. Some teas will be fermented for decades before being sold. (National Geographic, January 2025).
