CLUB BUSINESS

There is a RYLA South this year and any participant must be registered before February 23rd. The dates are March 25th - 28th at Camp Elphinstone and the cost is $450.00. If you know someone who is interested have them register.

Marg is looking for volunteers Tuesday mornings to serve breakfasts at Gilmore starting at 7 AM. So please check your calendars and help in a hands on project.

District 5040 is seeking corporate/financial sponsorship for this years district conference from April 28 - 30 2023 to address the twin concerns of new members and membership retention. The various packages can be considered by following this link. various sponsorship packages . The financial support will go directly to subsidizing the District Conference for new Rotarians, Future Rotarians and Rotaractors as a method of gaining support and continuing to grow Rotary in our communities.

Committee Reports

Auction Committee by Eleanore, but rather than screw it up here she will be sending detailed instructions on how to register your items in Givergy. Highlights though are there will be a new password. Do not create new categories. When you are finished hit the Create button at the top of the web page. Finally attach to each item at least the item number generated by Givergy, the Rotarian donating the item, and the description. Better details will be on the form prepared by Chris M.

I apologize to all that I did not hear everything and am also somewhat jet lagged.

Pat will be sitting at the same table (Foundation Dinner) as other club members and will also be picking up Max? For the same event?

Gordon was loud enough but appeared not to be speaking the King's English. There was something about wall waffles and this Robbie Burns poem.

Sandra will be selling tickets for the Auction this year but not until after February 15th as she is off to Maui for two weeks.

Max was in PG for a weekend orientation and where it was not that cold.🥶

Susan has been having meetings on top of meetings which are tiring her out but all for a good cause - International Women's Day.

Peachy was stressed out from her ICBC case after examinations for discovery and now will be going off to see various specialists.

Jeanette needs a criminal record check. More on her later.

Marg had huge projects in December but managed to put them off by binging on several variations of on line solitaire. A new but meaningful experience. Managed to complete all the projects in short order once she got to them. Did not understand a word of the scottish spoken at a Robbie Burns day celebration. Need Gordon to translate.

Dalbir thanked Debbie T. for her wonderful and thoughtful notes to Dalbir about losing a son shortly after she lost hers. Debbie is incredible the way she has shown how something good can come from such a tragedy. Dalbir followed their culture and had an open door for 14 days where they served dinner to at least 10 and had as many as 40 one night.

Peter is now reading a good book called "The Res" by Chief Clarence Louie will provide not only a good read but a learning experience about our Indigenous population.

Debbie M. enjoyed the service for Ryan. Has disturbing news about Manuel as the tumors have grown and there will be a meeting with the oncologist on Monday.

Judy was happy to see Dalbir back. Is off to Palm Springs and a Harry Styles concert whose music makes her happy. We all should know who he is or she doesn't want to know us. Just because none of us want to lose Judy as a friend here is a link to his Wikipedia page Harry Styles - Wikipedia

Chris M. is having a wonderful time with Max, including staying at a friends condo downtown, watching the dragon parade, having dim sum. giants game, and in return Max has volunteered to make dinner on Monday. We are all invited (JK). Oh and golfing this weekend.

Joyce has been very busy and something about the high steppers? on February 25th.

Bobby is double shifting at the hall because both brothers are away.

Carolyn is golfing with Chris M. and Max on Sunday.

Kal said it is great to see everyone and have all the visitors. His news is also great as the tumor on his spine is benign. So after all these years of possible joint replacement or other treatments he did not need - the problem has been addressed.

I was sorry to have missed the services for the sons of Dalbir and Debbie T. Just back from Egypt and Jordan with a fairly bad cold so stayed home. Lots of guns in Egypt but very few women to be seen.

Chris B. has been busy going to Richmond Restaurants.

Bob knows Harry Styles and years ago tried to sneak into a Madonna concert that Karen was going to. Even distributing flyers did not get him in. Is off to an agricultural show to see most recent innovations. Likely to help him farm his acreage in Ladner.

Meanderings

January 27th is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The day in 1945 the Auschwitz - Birkenau was liberated by the Russian Army.

Jeanette was born on April 11, in a year I did not hear but assume it was in the 1990s.🤞She was born in the Philippines and is the middle child of 5 with two brothers and two sisters. She got her Batchelor of Nursing there and worked in a Military Hospital for 11 years where she met her husband. They have two boys who are now 28 and 24 and still single. She then worked in England for 7 years. While there she was recruited by Vancouver Coastal Health and came to work at Richmond General Hospital in 2008. She works in elderly care - those over 74 - because it makes her feel like she with her family. Her parents are in the Philippines and many of her patients call her daughter. Jeanette enjoys shopping and hiking. They have a dog as a new addition to their family. She travels with Elena and enjoys travelling. She heard about Rotary and liked the idea of working on something without expectation of something in return. She showed us nice pictures of her family. She explained that to get her licence in Canada she received a one year temporary work permit and then wrote the board exams. If a nursing candidate needs a longer period they will extend it. She also explained how the hospital dealt with covid. First by putting patients with covid in a separate ward with no admissions and no discharges. Later with the vaccine things began to return to normal.

Peter was the product of Norwegian immigrants in 1947 and was raised in Bella Coola. Bella Coola Valley in the Great Bear Rainforest It is on the coast west of Williams Lake. There is not a lot of flat land in the area and the original settlers lived in log cabins in the valley. If they were lucky they got flat arable land. The population was about 2,000 so everyone knew each other and although you had two parents, you also had about 200 guardians. There is a river on one side of the town and a trout stream on the other side. He grew up in a hunting community so he got his first gun at 12 and was able to go hunting on his own at 16. He started school in 1953 and a new building with 6 rooms but before that 45 kids were taught in one room. At 12 years old he worked as a grocery clerk for $1 per hour and at 16 worked as a fish packer for $750 per month. A very good wage at the time. He also bought a '64 pick up truck that would not quite make it up the logging road. (not fake news photo proof). He went to high school on the east side of Vancouver at Charles Tupper. He then went to Vancouver City College which is now Langara. His first job was Robin Hood Flour scheduling trucks and trains. He then worked for the company that made Tums. When it was bought out he got a good severance and used that money to start a sales agency that represented companies that had no sales force. When he thought the future was uncertain he sold his shares to his partners and invested the money in his already existing nursery business in 1987. His customers are mainly cities and landscapers. He showed pictures (which did not scroll on zoom but I could tell from the oohs an aahs they were great pictures). He was married in 1967, built his house in 1970 and two sons in 1972 and 1973. Peter is still big on the outdoors and had an RV for a few years which he sold to buy the Cabin on the Tulameen. Hunting was still a feature of his life using a bush plane to hunt in Tweedsmuir Park and a memorable trip to the Northwest Territories to hunt Caribou. Peter has volunteered extensively in his community and we are happy to have him in our club as the President Elect Elect. His likes to spend his down time fishing and visiting his grandchildren who are into soccer.
