sergeant  At Arms Tidbits

Mary Lou went to the pumpkin patch with Oscar. Did not cook the turkey for the first time in 34 years. Somewhere out there is a turkey as grateful as you.
Dalbir went to the almost ghost town that is downtown Vancouver and had a reasonably priced client lunch at Nightingales. Then went to Whistler and danced in the rain.
Sandra told us about a thanksgiving past where a napkin caught fire and burned a hole in her beautiful Greek Table cloth. Was offered a doily to cover the hole. Taking daughter out for 30th birthday.
Kathy had steak for thanksgiving. Another grateful turkey out there. However she did not practice non - defensive responses when she swore at the pie crust. It may have been the first time in 34 years she has made a pie crust. I say leave it to Don.
Bobby celebrated his mom's 76th birthday. He is now getting home by 4 or 5 PM every day. His wife thinks it is too much of a good thing.
Judy had a great time at Qualicum Beach, went shopping with Kal Rai, hmm, unusual, perhaps not, went to Pumpkin patch with grandchildren. Then to the winery, hmm, unusual perhaps not.
Marg had a quiet thanksgiving with the recommended six people. Watching tennis at 3:00 AM from Russia. The Mueller report stated there was no Russian interference. Marg reports that the exercise she thought was impossible is possible.
Chris M. reports that some kids who have not been in school since March are back and although many staff issues the kids are happy.
Dick was happy to see Chris M. and had a nice thanksgiving.
Brian had a great bone in ham from Newman's for thanks giving. Another grateful turkey out there. Back in the gym where there was plenty of space.
Garth had thanksgiving with grand kids. More work at Whistler.
Joyce was happy her granddaughter is back in school. Transformation from monster to angel.
Sam skipped out to take moose out and I am not mentioning him in the bulletin this week.
Melinda reported that Heath cooked the Turkey this year, Makes thanksgiving easy. Willow is into costumes now. Just in time for Halloween.
Deb M. had nice weather in Penticton and good news about Manuel.
Carolyn explained how to use a power drill to carve a pumpkin. It sounded more like reaming and screwing than carving. In bad taste? Perhaps!
Elena reported that she attended the Vancouver/Fraserview club where two new members were inducted.
Deb T. was walking her dogs who decided to pull her into a stinging nettles bush. Ouch. Affected three of her extremities. I bet that tested her nettle.
Ron is eating a lot of sashimi and putting on weight. Perhaps not. He wants to give away his ping pong table. Maybe that's why the extra weight.
Chris P. I think said her behaviour is deteriorating? Is that even possible? Perhaps not. Her turkey tasted like a napkin. Maybe that is what she ate. Another happy turkey out there somewhere?
Pat's grandchildren are happy being back in school.
Bob's mother in law brought the turkey this year. Used to eat KFC for thanksgiving. Unhappy Turkeys Happy Chickens. Bought a 69 Camaro and then a competitors building. Thinking of leasing the building to a KFC Franchise?
Amanda had Melinda's ham for Thanksgiving and went hiking at Cypress. Enjoying Walktober. Also happy 🐔 think turkey.
Bill was having trouble deciding between cake and pie until daughter in law Kyla arrived with her sweet potato pie. Bill jogged into a fire requiring 9 fire trucks to deal with it.
Debbie S. could eat pies all day. She and Ron have the same kind of weight problem. Perhaps none. Had her thanksgiving bubble and planted bulbs on the Island. Oh, and don't anyone else bid on the dust buster. She signed an executive order.
And Kal - Where's Kal?

Garth, who practices primarily in the area of family law spoke to use about Alternate Dispute Resolution. He spoke about collaboration in resolving disputes in place of both litigation and mediation. It is an evolving area of law mostly in family law now but could apply to disputes in all areas of law. Garth said the first goal is to avoid disputes by putting your agreements in writing whether pre-nup agreement or loans to family members. Also keep good records because litigation lawyers make their money where there is no documentation. Dispute resolution usually starts with negotiation. If the parties need to they can hire a mediator or third party who will find common ground between the parties and will now be active in pressing the parties to find a settlement. The latest approach is the collaborative approach where the parties agree they will not go to court. Divorce counsellors, the parties and their lawyers all meet together and the parties work openly about the facts and the law. Parties can also hire an arbitrator who will expedite the resolution process and make a binding decision but the final resolution is then out of the parties control. The last alternative is to go to court where the financial costs are high, the outcome is uncertain, and a judge decides, instead of the parties what the solution should be.
The idea of the collaborative approach is to make a safe environment for the parties to interact and negotiate without fear. It encourages active listening and reframing what was said so the other party understands what was heard from the listeners perspective. Part of the process is determining what motivates people and how they learn. The parties need to perform a risk/goal analysis and monetize the issues so as to learn what is important to people. A parenting coordinator is put in place either by agreement or court order where there has been extensive litigation and the parents cannot agree on anything. The coordinators decisions in certain circumstances are binding. The process starts with mediation and then arbitration if the parties cannot agree. In resolving disputes this way it is important to use non defensive speech and react in a positive manner. Do not respond emotionally(24 hour rule, 48 if you are really pissed off) decide if you need to respond at all, determine your goal and follow BIFF. Brief, informative(factual), friendly and firm.  Act and speak with integrity. Remember it is not about you and we all have different perceptions, interact without assumptions and always try to do your best.

Meanderings

Coincidently, Scientific American had an article on how to unlearn racism. You have to be aware of your biases. You have to be concerned about the consequences of your biases and be motivated to make the effort to eliminate them. Research shows that interacting with a wide variety of racial groups makes people care more about racial justice. One important point is that racism harms white people too. As an example white people will oppose social policies represented by the Affordable Care Act because of the perception the programs are designed to help people of colour when they will also benefit white people. Although not stated in the article just think of opportunities lost because of a failure to interact with or recognize the strengths of another racial group. The book Marg mentioned, White Fragility is referenced and also Dismantling Racism: A Workbook for Social Change Groups and How to be Less Stupid About Race.

TODAYS CHUCKLEs

Coincidentally I found another joke about efficiency experts.

An efficiency expert walked up to two clerks in a Government office in Washington.  “What do you do here?” he asked the first man.

The clerk, fed up with years worth of red tape, buck-passing, meaningless forms, office politics and especially efficiency experts, snapped back “I don’t do a thing around here!”

The efficiency expert nodded and made a short notation in his notebook.  He then turned to the other clerk and asked, “And what’s your job here?”

The second clerk, just as fed up as the first clerk, also replied: “I don’t do a thing around here either!”

The efficiency expert’s eyes brightened as he made another note and said, “Aha! Duplication!”

Did you know that a raven has 17 rigid feathers called pinions, while a crow only has 16.
The difference between a raven and a crow is just a matter of a pinion.
So Debbie M., what's your opinion?
