Gordon taught Max how to say bon voyage in Danish – which sounds rude, apparently. Max, when you look back at the video there will be a catch in your throat.
Larry didn’t get to know Max as well as he would have liked, and hopes he’ll come back. Last weekend he was in Birch Bay having dinner and drinks with friends. Yesterday he was at Lion’s Gate Hospital, and got spots burned off his face and lips, which gets rid of early cancer. Good news - no cancer in his leg! But he has 8 fractures which weren’t caught when he broke his foot. He’s going to a specialist to figure out next steps. The cancer surgery is coming up but he doesn’t know when, and will have to do 40 dives in the hyperbaric chamber, every day for 30 before surgery and 10 after. All the radiation has done major damage and the skin is dying on the top of his head, so capillaries need to be stimulated. There is a list of potential happenings in the chamber, but they won’t happen as he’s the perfect candidate. We’re with you Larry!
Garth and John – Someone yelled “Fore” as they hurried off to play golf. (Ed. note Your bulletin editor won $4 off of Garth. It may be the reason he has not retired yet.)
Dalbir is proud of Larry’s perseverance and reminds us that it is good to say “please help me” and no one will say “no”. Max, your rotary exchange students will be your friends for life. You will forever have these peers and those connections as your class of rotary. Keep in touch as you become an ambassador for Rotary.
Judy says Larry is in our thoughts and prayers. She is so happy to see the experiences Max has had. Tonight she is going to see “Million Dollar Quartet” at the Arts Club Theatre. Riding lessons for the grandchildren are happening now.
Marg says it has been great getting to know Max. The last students from Czech Republic and Belgium have been visited, so get ready. Her Saturday Book Club read ‘As You Like It’ in preparation for Bard on the Beach with Beatles music. Yesterday she saw Beautiful, about Carol King, with all local artists. Next week, she’ll see Million Dollar Quartet.
Kal regrets not having asked Max to cut the grass at his place(ED note - wasn't Kal's ride on mower burned after the last gang land shooting). Larry we’re here for you.
Bill had a wedding last Thursday at Deer Park, with no shade, and 35 degrees. Then a car show on Sunday, the BC Lions game, an Orpheum silent movie (Charlie Chaplin with a 1927 music organ), a hockey game, and dinner with Max at Ichiro last night. Max is amazing. Larry is in our thoughts.
Sam wants us to know that Bill won MVP at hockey, (but don’t applaud him as he says it’s no big deal). But he posted it on Instagram. Max, it has been great having you here and your most valuable skill is your openness to new experiences.
Blair wishes he had sat at the fun table, not the serious one. His brother had his first chemo treatment today and hopes he will be as positive as Larry. It was great to see Max’s experiences.
Pat says it has been wonderful having Max here. She is sorry she didn’t take a photo of his tennis lesson, and hopes he plays tennis in Denmark. Best of luck to Larry. Pat is retired from nursing but busy with the family company. She fell in tennis but was lucky it was on her good knee, and just a bruise. (Ed Note did she say "bruise" or "booze"? Sometime she speaks very quietly and one does not always here things correctly.)
Amanda tells Max his adventure was amazing, so much to fit into a year, and knows that it will be a lucky Denmark. She is back from vacation with family and friends and was happy she had 3 days off to recover from the social drinking. She is starting 100-day challenge with 12 friends, being super healthy and no booze. She is finding a perfect place for the Paul Harris award, for which she thanks us again.
Micheal says it was great having Max in the club, with the sports and games and loving our food. He has grown! Hats off to Larry. He was in Playland with the children on the weekend, was sliding with 4-year-old until his son went on his own, , and then Micheal realized his son didn’t need him – yay!
Peachy remembers Max eating chicken feet. She had visitors from the UK and Boston, and has been busy driving around BC and to Portland.
Danny reminds Max that whatever he did here, it is for life. He is praying for Larry. He was hiking last weekend at a lake, with 3 levels, parking, up 2 km, and then 3 hours later to the most beautiful viewpoint. He will be going to Europe (Italy - Rome, Venice, Florence, then Greece - Athens, etc. then Turkey) for business and pleasure. He’ll be back next month.
Carolyn says Max made her day on the golf course the other day, not for his wonderful improvement, long straight drives, and ability to play two fairways at once or for his sense of humour. He made her day when she asked him what he wanted to eat when he gets home, and he replied ‘something my grandma makes’. Carolyn thought of her own cooking with her grandkids and is thinking of what a legacy Max’s grandparents have given him. Carolyn is wondering what Larry will do to occupy his time in the chamber!
Joyce expressed her best wishes for Larry. Max showed us up on the golf course, having only played for a few months. Everything is possible!
Mary Lou gave Max her business card – good plan. She thanks us for help with Dad and sends best wishes for Larry. Welcome to Nicci. They have started cleaning out her dad’s place and could open a hardware store. It is very emotional. They’re heading to the cabin tomorrow to install a new deck, which is very therapeutic, and are taking some of Dad’s stuff to hang up there. Oscar and his parents are leaving in ML’s camper to go to Quebec. Mary Lou and Alan will be flying out to drive it back.
Maddie says it was lovely getting to know Max, and thought it was funny he always wanted to order chicken strips, even from Mexican restaurant. Regrettably, she talked him into a burrito, and it was too spicy!
Chris P. says that Larry is an inspiration, showing us to never give up. She will become a rogue Rotarian again, as lots is going on. She’s going to Denver with Maddie and to Haida Gwaii with Dad. She will miss Max so much. He has been so open to everything and went flying with Mitch this week. She will be sad to see him go.
Debbie S. agrees that Larry is an inspiration even anticipating the hyperbaric chamber. Safe travels to Max. Her son and his bride are super chill for their Saturday wedding. Debbie found a hummingbird which she will tuck into a bouquet, to symbolize Mom at the wedding.
Nicci was here from Lake Chapala and Chris M. read the blurb from her club last week. Their club starts at 10 a.m. as they’re retired. Mexican politics are challenging, and the sanitation project is on indigenous land, so they had to go through all kinds of obstacles, and thought they were ready, but found out the document they had was a 2013 edition, and not official. The sister, who isn’t speaking to the family, has the official 2009 document, but will fly down and sign it off. Construction should begin soon, and the village is so excited to get going. On a personal note, she has been traveling a lot, and is going to represent Mexico in Marrakech in the world bridge championships.
Chris M. is on an emotional ride this week, with her son’s wedding this Saturday and Max’s imminent departure, which she can’t talk about without tearing up. She has been battling rodents (or something) which have been eating her sunflowers (stars at the wedding) and so paints each of the 30 plus stalks every evening with Siracha sauce and thinks she is winning the battle. Only two more days.
Bobby reminds Larry that we are his family and if he needs anything, he can phone Judy (for wine, or Micheal and Kal to socialize, or for butter chicken - any time. Max, it was great to know you, and we had fun at the games and food tasting – you were so flexible, for eating everything! Bobby had an up and down week, with a hostile business meeting which was productive based on Dalbir’s advice of five words (we didn’t quite get what they were, but maybe not printable). Bobby reminds us not to be shy about making phone calls for help as we have so much diverse expertise. Bobby’s dentist is going to do something for the gap between his teeth.

Bob is amazed at Larry’s perseverance, including confronting the hyperbaric chamber – he might he become a 6 Million Dollar Man? (or at least look like Lee Majors). Amanda’s challenge sounds wonderful. Too bad Max didn’t get to ride in the 1965 Mustang, but the plan fell through when it started raining and there were no functioning windshield wipers.
