Meanderings

On Remembrance Day and in the days leading up to it we all contemplate it's meaning in our own way. I think of my father's brother Ed, who was wounded in July 1944 and died in August 44 while he was in his early 20s. I visited his grave when I was 19 and travelling in England in 1971. This year it has more meaning for me because I have the correspondence my father received during the war. This is taken from a letter my uncle George wrote to my Dad in October, 1944. George was stationed with the RCAF in Ireland and Dad was stationed in B.C. with the dental corps.

"Mother seems to worry too much about things and doesn't seem to be over what happened to Ed. After all Ed's worries are over and it must make Ed sad when he sees us feeling so bad about his leaving us. I wish I could do something to comfort and help mother. I'm going to write mother this afternoon and I guess I'm always afraid of making things worse instead of better."

Mother of course was my Grandma Marquardt. This is my family's Remembrance and I am sure many of you have your own. I hope you don't mind me sharing mine.
