Dalbir, looking dapper in his suit, reiterated the value of the word inclusive. He had to leave early to braid hair with the 4-year-old grandson. (Apparently a Formal Dress only event.)
Amanda thanks Vicky for her presentation. It was a good final auction wrap-up meeting last night. On her way to rotary this morning, she got 7 minutes from meeting and had to turn around to drive Graham to work. Their anniversary is this weekend on Sunday, and they’re going to Baan Lao in Steveston, as she has wanted to go since they opened.
Mary Lou thanks Amanda for last night’s auction meeting. She ran into Vicky Ryan at the Women of Distinction award event. She hadn’t heard of the Girls Club, and was amazed it was a Richmond-based charity. (one that Marylou had not heard of – and she knows everything) She was at the British car event in Van Dusen gardens this weekend. She went to Sooke and saw Georgina and stayed overnight at her place.
Chris M. thanks Amanda for the auction debrief meeting last night and thanks Eleanore for the data analysis of auction results since we started using Givergy in 2019 – results have been consistent. Her son-in-law left last night with his big buddies for a guys’ stag in Montreal. After lots of beers at the house, Olivia drove them to the airport. Chris must say that there is nothing she would rather not do than go to Montreal with 12 guys who are all over 6’ 2” and weigh well over 200 lbs each – raucous and loud and boisterous and if you stand next to them, you are sure to get stepped on or bowled over. (But she wasn’t invited, so all good). She hugged each of them and told them her usual – ‘have fun and be safe’. They’re back on Sunday.
Debbie S. brought dahlia tubers for anyone who wants to try growing some – the ones with the sprouts are guaranteed. She and John celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary this weekend, and each of them is a saint to have put up with each other that long. John M. did line dancing at Ladner with her, at the senior’s centre, which is for 50+ years old, and it’s once a week. John demonstrated – not bad. (I think that could also mean "not good"!)
John felt big and young at the line dancing. As an ex-football player, he remembers “Big Al” in 1975 and not wanting to do a ‘one on one’ with him. John will be in Toronto visiting his wife’s family and friends next week.
Blair has an autistic grandson, who is turning 13, and lives in a small town without many services, and it is difficult financially, including waiting for a year for an appointment in Calgary. They are getting more integrated with support.
Sam is happy to talk about girl autism. He is passionate about autism and about desserts. For their anniversary last Thursday, he and Justin went to Minami as Justin works for the head office. Nikki Tam does the desserts and Sam’s a big fun. The desserts there are fascinating. He wants to meet her one day.
Bill says two weeks ago Friday, Jake had to renew his TN (Trade NAFTA) USA, so took the train ride to Niagara Falls from Manhattan, should have been rubber stamped, but was rejected, had a manila folder, had the passport in it, then not in it. He called on Monday, saying he can’t find his passport, must have dropped it, then last Friday went to the Canadian consulate in New York for a temporary one, which is white, and is now getting a permanent one, hopefully he will be on the flight and get it worked out so he can continue to work in the USA.
Kal was at Seasons in the Park, for the Route 66 kickstart. Friday he is going to the Gerry Biggar church services, then to an anniversary.
Judy thanks John for the birthday dance. She has lunches and dinners coming up for her birthday. (Then cakes were delivered, and we sang happy birthday - this should happen every Thursday in May - right Judy?). Her twin grandsons are having their 9th birthday with a hockey theme and a surprise visit from Finn. She is going on the Alzheimer’s’ walk.
Marg has a niece who lost her passport 3times, went 3 times for interviews and it took year and a half to get new one. Ben has always had girls who are friends, but they get older and have children, and although he has friends at jobs, he sometimes feels lonely. They were at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel in Victoria this weekend and asked for an extra bed in the room and were told absolutely not, so Don had to hide, from room service, towels, and pool robes.(Not an easy task!) But they had fabulous whale watching. Yesterday she saw Casey and Diana at the theatre, and it was outstanding.
Micheal says the staff is calm with Bobby away and more work is getting done. It’s a busy weekend coming up. (Who's in charge - yikes? 😱
Maryam has an autistic brother, and she coached swimming for a long time. It is a spectrum. She won’t be here next week, as she is going to Halifax for a conference.
Jeannette’s sister in the Philippines is a teacher for special kids, who had a fashion show, sponsored by Singapore, and the parents were more excited than the children. We need two more members for tech support at the meetings, working with Bobby and Sam - let Jeanette know if you can help. Today she has 4 visitors, but the car won’t hold everyone because the dog gets the front seat. (Passenger or Drivers?)
Sandra had Brian’s birthday celebration in Chilliwack this weekend, with Miller. They had her sister’s 60th birthday at Joey’s in the mezzanine, just them, with kids running around, and lots of fingerprints everywhere. Friday is Kyle’s birthday and then the birthday month is done.
Melinda has an autistic cousin in California. They went to Osoyoos last week, their auction win, and it was lovely, but the weather wasn’t warm, so no pool. They had lunches and saw friends. She had the girls last night so couldn’t go the auction meeting, as she wasn’t leaving john with the three girls. (Melinda did not make it clear who she thought would survive.)
Pat was flying back from Palm Springs and the flight was delayed, so she missed the auction meeting, and thinks it was because they didn’t have enough air traffic controllers. She has about 50 people signed up for the president’s dinner and the room can hold 65, so we can invite family or friends. Let Pat know.
Debbie T. was at Birch Bay last weekend and it rained the whole time so she caught up on sleep and Netflix. They had a great school board meeting last night, with young people presenting about mental health – inspiring. Years ago, one of the school’s kids wanted to have a mental health club and were told no, so we’ve come a long way. At the Pathways dinner there was a young girl talking about depression, so things are changing.
Peter had a card group at the senior’s centre, and one player had Aspergers syndrome, high functioning, and he was unbelievable with numbers, not so much with social skills, so he fit in well.
