Zian Sethi, Rocky’s son, loves being active with sports, basketball and playing with his dog, Max. In the neighbourhood, he always runs into his friends. Rotary inspires him, and at Vancouver College, his school, they share the same values as Rotary. Being a better person, service above self and helping others without expecting anything in return is inspirational to him.
Every year, students collect Christian Service hours, doing something kind, with no expectations of return.
SERGEANT At Arms Tidbits
Lawrence: Wasn’t at the meeting, but will proofread and edit anyway.
John: Also wasn’t at the meeting but on zoom for 5 minutes but had to leave for breakfast unfortunately just before Michael started talking. Back from Mexico this week.
Micheal: Settling in, new furniture yesterday, getting back on track (ED: Was it actually this short? If anyone feels Michael’s are ever too short, let me know and I’ll make them longer. Seriously. Ask me. He doesn’t even have to have been there.)
Chris M. Eleanor’s birthday was a huge success. 30 adults and 12 kids. Eleanor had a ‘smash cake’ which is part of modern parenting – you make a special small birthday cake and give it to the one-year-old and she got to dig in and smash it all over her face. We practised singing Happy Birthday for three weeks before so that she wouldn’t be scared of the song, and she loved the singing – success!
Peachy was in Whistler, overdressed as she was expecting the cold but it was warm. Lots of people, with friends who hadn’t been there so they were lying in the snow. New client in Richmond in a home, full time, so resorting caregivers. (ED: I think that’s supposed to be “re-sorting”, but will leave as-is in case the caregivers are somewhere all-inclusive.)
Larry was shopping last week in the USA, got pyjamas, Harry Potter loungers, for Heartwood. It’s busy at work, not a good thing, dealing with children, so sad. Judy’s quiche is the best, including the crust.
Maryam is happy to be here, in person. Family day weekend went to Ottawa to see her sister, big snowstorm, enough of that. Flight cancelled, right after the ‘Delta flip flight’, terrifying to get on to a flight after that, but got back at 3 a.m. and went to school, to coach basketball – a hard Tuesday! Note Maryam teaches at Grauer.
Pat was sick last week, after watching the son’s hockey game, (ED: first thought: “the hockey was that bad?”) and had a hotdog and thinks she was infected from the condiments (ED: makes more sense). Went bowling and that’s all for the week.
Susan on Zoom is resting after her operation on Feb. 5, getting better every day, and will be off work until at least her birthday on March 20. Please attend the Peace conference on March 19. Her brother Andrew will be coming to visit around that time.
Amanda forgot to charge her phone, so the alarm didn’t go off. Hard couple of weeks, deaths of friends, including a mentor stylist and one of her biggest inspirations because of a homicide. Gala meeting on March 5th at the Ballroom.
Sandra had dinner with friends. Today she was wearing her Canada cap, but was told it was like Trump. Government contract with BC, with political questions.
Joyce is not having fun purging as it takes her back throughout life, remembering the ups and downs, and spends hours reading memories.
Bob Shoker’s mom had open heart surgery and is recovering well. Saw Brian shoveling snow last week, asked if he needed anything and as he didn’t, kept driving. Wanted to buy in Palm Springs, finally bought in Scottsdale, with a low loonie, not best timing. He’ll be here next week and at the Food Bank too.
Garth had a great English concert last week at the Chan Centre. (ED: Sometimes it’s just not gonna make sense.)
Dalbir is better and out of the house, the first two months of 2025 have been rough, after intense pickle ball in Mexico, was diagnosed with pneumonia. Mother-in-law has dementia and wanted to go back home, so their house is empty. Jacob, grandson, in Keremeos, whom they get every 3 weeks will be full time now as they got a call to take him. Now they are full time parenting until the mom gets better.
Rocky loved the quiche. Congratulations to Zian for his speech. Appreciates we’re a great group of people. (ED: 100% blanked on Judy bringing breakfast and wondered who else got invited to this “quiche party”)
Zian had family day weekend, is in playoffs season for hockey, beating the other team 8-0 who forfeited. School is a little boring, but nice to hang out with friends.
Marg went to Primary Trust at Granville Island, weird, fabulous lead actor. Great celebrating birthday, then received a letter congratulating her and reminding her she’ll have to take a driver’s exam next year as she’ll be 80. How horrible.
Judy was baking at 10pm last night, got a text from her daughter at Tap n Barrel, waved in her pjs. Lindsey and Andrew had parked underneath, then were locked out of the parking, so they were at Judy’s door for her fob, then Andrew lost Lindsey, so Judy had to walk them to the parking. On the weekend twins were in a hockey tournament, Liam is refereeing some games, and did have a game when he called two boardings, and got cheeseburgers, hot dogs and donuts for the referees. Spencer was asking for handouts and got a cheeseburger. Had a couple of nice dinners on the weekend and was walking around on Valentine’s Day and was approached by a young girl to be in a video for a company, with a tall young handsome looking guy – it was for Indochino, so she had to walk across the street to accept a long-stemmed rose. Four years on Monday since Ralph passed away, so will invite all the kids.
Debbie M. admires the kindness and patience of Dalbir and Kal, especially with his grandson. She’s known Rocky’s dad in the business for a long time. She will have been in real estate for 40 years, having begun at 10 years old. Went to Laurel Point in Victoria, an easy walk to everywhere and great views. Spent time with her granddaughter, and Miles was picking her up from preschool, where she had told everyone her grandpa has a really big head (ED: Impossible to tell whether the subject of the sentence was Debbie or her granddaughter).
Blair tried to give Dalbir pointers on changing diapers. 20 years ago, Blair had a grandson who lived with him his whole life. Yesterday was his boss’ 84th birthday, and he had his own individual cake, like for the babies! Valentine’s Day for singles is a blankie and watching Bette Midler movies and crying yourself to sleep. (ED: “First Wives Club”, “Ruthless People”, or “Hocus Pocus”?)
Brian for years always went to his Ex’s cottage, so is now saving to do a surf trip in May, and found that a learn to surf in Costa Rica is the choice. He has a girlfriend, (legally blind?) (ED: beat me to it!). He just turned 50 and went to La Connor with her, where he saw old magazines and bought his buddy a Time magazine from 1975. They found an espresso hut, with a barista who was wearing a fishnet, which was very unsettling for ordering, and it cost $22 USD for two coffees. Apparently, it was the bikini barista, many of them around the US! (ED: Related: didn’t see Kal in the minutes – new job?)
Bill and Shelley went to Valentine’s on the 15th, as it’s cheaper. Jake is officially divorced as the papers are signed. Sam is playing hockey in Palm Springs. Sam’s surrogacy voyage got tripped up, due to an overdose and things are put off. Bill won’t be here next week.
Bobby welcomes Maryam. First time he met her was giving the scholarships at schools. The table with Bob, except for Garth, have done all the weddings at Riverside which offers full package services for Zian when he’s ready. He started training on Tuesday for the half marathon BMO in May and will register for the Scotia. He was chilling in Whistler, and drove back on Valentine’s Day, decided to come to the hall dressed up and it was super active, no DJ, Micheal had gone to Costco for Cesar salad, and he got into work mood, and was so busy, that he was late for Valentine’s Day dinner with his wife, and was going to pick up Italian food, but lack of time made it butter chicken and rice and he slept on the couch and she left for Toronto the next day. Someone is building a new house nearby and it’s high – a tri or 6-plex, no basement, but 3 levels plus a rooftop deck, and an eyesore on the block. So, his couch is visible from the rooftop deck. Micheal used to live on 28th Ave and had a nice back deck on his house with trees, and the townhomes couldn’t see his deck, then they trimmed the trees from 20 ft to fence height, and Micheal was very upset. That was 6 years ago, and they’re back up to 20 ft again and the neighbours want trees trimmed again for his grapevines. (ED: Are we sure this isn’t Michael? Ed: assistant – NO S%$#)
Peter got a call from one of the Sedines that his neighbour built a house big enough to look down on him, so Peter planted 20 ft trees for him as a screen. (ED: Not sure if this is a typo of Vancouver’s famous hockey twins, or just a family everyone knows but me.) His granddaughter got a call from Whitecaps Junior Ladies group to try out for their squad, so will take time off school. What a proud grandpa! They’re going to Spain in March for a soccer program.
MEANDERINGS
I noticed no one mentioned horses at the meeting this week. So I will. Did you know that all modern thoroughbreds trace there lineage to just three Arabian stallions imported to England in 1686, 1704 and 1730. Only two horse breeds, the Arabian and now extinct Turkoman, are responsible for almost all existing horses. This is from the same book that told me about the earliest evidence of the use of cannabis. No not The "Mahal Chronicles."

A Four Year Old asked me how I know so many things. I told her I went to school for a long long time. Then she said:
Four year old: “The only thing I've learned at daycare is one-on-one.”
Me: “Oh, like how to spend time one-on-one with someone?”
Four year old: “No, like when you're fighting, don't try to fight three people at once. Only fight one-on-one.”
She later clarified that this is not the *only* thing she has learned at daycare, but just the most important.
