Act of kindness week is April 17^th – 23^rd. Rotary wants to record over 1 million acts of kindness. Report you act of kindness next week during Sgt At Arms.

Rotary International President Jennifer Jones is visiting in Richmond July 10^th. Our club has been asked if we are interested in organizing an event for her possibly in coordination with the other Richmond Clubs.

The AGM is May 5^th for RWHN.

Elena and Danny took part in loading the container that was going to Poland for the Ukrainian refugees with surgical equipment, microscopes, other medical equipment and beds.

The Board voted against organizing an event to host the visit of the RI president but would consider assisting another club if asked.

April 24th to 30th is the world immunization week.

We have filled 27 tables for the auction with 285 guests and 250 silent auction items and 9 live items.

sergeant At Arms Tidbits

Mary Lou had a wonderful easter weekend at the cabin with a bunch of under 7 year olds having an easter egg hunt.

Dick made his first trip to Saskatchewan since the beginning of covid and although a blizzard threatened there was no effect on his trip. He also proved that he can travel in an airplane with a mask.

Joyce was welcomed back by all and managed to survive living with a 4 and 7 year old.

Danny went to the Chilliwack tulip festival and also a 2k hike with his daughter.

Christine M. is now living with some who have tested positive so attended by zoom. Is still doing her walking 30,000 plus steps. Was supposed to be going to Osoyoos but that was cancelled. She worked all day Saturday with Eleanore cleaning up the silent auction items and the program. The auction will be going live April 27th.

Larry went to Birch Bay. His hot water tank blew up(don't know if Birch Bay or home) and as we all know it happens in threes. Larry fell and hurt his hand and fortunately not broken. Went to his sons for easter and going to see his mom whom he has finally convinced to move into a retirement home. Gets to empty the house which is going going gone on sale tomorrow.

Susan's recovery from her fall is going well. She made an easter basket and provided some art supplies for her mom who was thrilled with the gift.

I am also now in a household better but still symptomatic from covid. Hence zoom this week. Doing the cooking for the two of us seems to be working to reduce the covid symptoms.

Gordon explained our fundraising auction to our guests. Good job Gord. Unfortunately or fortunately he just fell short of the number of words needed for the prolix award.

Debbie S. spent easter with John's sister and a bunch of daughter Nicole's international friends from her job as an adventure guide. Her English boyfriend went to TNT to buy easter eggs. Managed to find someone with whom he could communicate and was directed to the cooler with eggs. No chocolate easter eggs at TNT.

Debbie T. was on kitten watch after the kitten had received some shots. Will be spending the weekend at the Bayshore for the Trustees annual general meeting with all the politics involved. The focus will be on First Nations Education.

Dalbir was beside Belinda Boyd at a lunch and she had recently settled a refugee family from Ukraine. Dalbir hosted 25 people over for easter.

Melinda is back from Palm Springs. Grandchildren were great fun easter egg hunting and hoovering up the gummy bears. House is a mess but oh what fun.

Bobby has been busy at the hall and celebrating his birthday tomorrow.

Bob has friends????😮I'm sure he mentioned who they were but also something about going to the Dave Chapelle show.

Marg attends an outdoor service at Garry Point at sunrise every easter. Apparently the church that organized it did not show up on time. So one hymn, one prayer, and off for coffee. Also Don never falls while skiing but last weekend a ski got stuck in the powder leading to a face plant, gashes, and broken glasses.

Judy was at Birch Bay for the family easter egg hunt with nice weather. Granddaughter also face planted but unfortunately had two cracked teeth and another pushed up into the gum. Surgery in her future.

Kal had a great weekend with a 4 hour wait for the border, 4 sailing wait for the island and Sunwing was cancelled so he has an appointment with a specialist instead - finally. Were they both in line for the ferry?🤔

Bill was hard to hear but passover was great, New York is back to normal, and getting guests ready to blah blah blah and blah.

Garth had the best ham yet for Easter care of Seafair Gourmet meats. He is still finding Easter eggs but did not say if that was at home or at the office. 🤔

Pat almost T-boned another "woman" driver who had been stopped somewhere along Ryan Road then suddenly pulled out in front of Pat. Pat honked her horn actually!!!!! How nice. 🤬Pat also asks that if you have gift certificates please bring them to her next week as she has to put them into the envelopes.

Samantha from the Arusha club told us about the clubs many incredible projects and the clubs history. It is the second oldest Rotary Club in Tanzania beginning in 1958, there are 24 members with 7 different nationalities and 50% men and woman. It is the only club in Tanzania able to qualify for global grants. The club decided to focus on projects it was good at and chose water, sanitation, and hygiene as well as focusing on the girl child. Through their project of "Goodbye Thirsty" water collection and supply they have helped over 150,000 people. The club has built toilets at six schools and hopes to do so at 25 schools. They have provided delivery and recovery beds for a maternity dispensary. Supporting a clinic and school promoting maternal and children's health. Other projects include bicycles so girls can ride home safely from school, a vaccine drive and a walk for polio. The next big goal is to create a blood bank for Arusha. Winnie then talked to us about the progress of the Inherit your rights project. The purpose is to have women's rights known, respected and protected. This is achieved through the awareness of rights by training counsellors, advocates, local leaders, teachers, and children. The project has reached 10,000 citizens and have trained over 150. In Arusha 40% of girls are forced to marry, 44% suffer physical or sexual abuse, 60% of women believe violence is part of marriage, and 70% of children suffer some form of physical abuse. Additionally female genital mutilation is still widely practiced although illegal. Winnie is aware that men need to be included in the training and there are 70 men, including local leaders, and 75 women enrolled in the training who are taught 16 legal rights over 6 sessions. The local leaders are the first responders in family disputes and they accordingly need to understand and know women's legal rights. A community assessments showed a need to address the issues of spousal and child abuse, child abandonment and traditional customs that heavily favored men in that all property was considered to belong to men. Woman work including child care but have no rights. If spouses separate the children go with the men and the women return to their clan. Meanderings

Okay so I could not think of anything to put in this section this week so I searched "the most obscure facts". Some are pretty interesting if you are feeling bored. Here is a sample.

Oranges may be an iconic fruit, but they are not a naturally occurring one, as The Telegraph points out. In fact, oranges are a hybrid of tangerines and pomelos, also known as "Chinese grapefruit," and they were originally green—not, well, orange. Oranges are a subtropical fruit, but now that they exist in more temperate climates, they lose their chlorophyll-induced green and become their more familiar color when the weather warms up.

One of the earliest uses—perhaps the earliest use—of "OMG" appeared in a letter to the then-member of Parliament, as The Atlantic reports. In 1917, British Navy Admiral John Arbuthnot Fisher wrote to Winston Churchill about rumors of new titles that would soon be bestowed. "I hear that a new order of Knighthood is on the tapis," he wrote. "O.M.G. (Oh! My God!)—Shower it on the Admiralty!" OMG, indeed. And finally one I hope never comes back. High heels were originally worn by men.

In the 10th century, men in Europe adopted the now-gendered fashion choice of heels to make it easier to ride their horses: Adding heels to their boots made it easier to stay in their stirrups. As Slate explains, "The Persian cavalry wore inch-high heels, and the trend spread to Europe. Since they showed that the wearer owned and maintained horses, high heels became associated with the upper class."
