INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE

For the first time ever there was a confrontation about who was supposed to give the inspirational quote. After a pitched battle between Debbie M.. and Joyce, with both of them on the ropes it was agreed that both would read their inspirational quotes.

"Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work." Thomas Edison via Joyce.

Debbie M.'s quote could not be found.

   VISITORS

Yuen Chen joined us in person because he needed to see us in person. Did we really exist? What really exists? He may come back? Or will he?

Speaker

Rotary Guest Speaker: Ron Benoit – The Red Cross and the Power of Volunteering
Past club member and longtime community volunteer, Ron Benoit, returned to speak about his work with the Canadian Red Cross and the urgent need for more volunteers. Ron shared that after stepping back from his hectic career over a decade ago, he wanted to do something meaningful and varied – and the Red Cross was the perfect fit.
Ron currently serves as Team Lead for the Richmond Red Cross Depot, where he coordinates volunteers and ensures smooth operations. Over the years, he’s been involved in three major areas of Red Cross service:
  • Emergency Response: Supporting communities during large-scale crises such as fires, floods, and evacuations. Ron has deployed to places like Prince George, Williams Lake, and Grand Forks, helping people through some of their hardest moments.
  • Personal Disaster Assistance: Responding to smaller events, like house or apartment fires, to provide emergency aid, temporary shelter, and essentials.
  • Health Equipment Loan Program: A cornerstone service that provides free, short-term loans of medical equipment (walkers, crutches, wheelchairs, even hospital beds) to people recovering from surgery or illness. Ron described how this program saves people from having to purchase expensive equipment they only need for a short time, and how volunteers ensure everything is sanitized, repaired, and ready for the next client.
Ron spoke passionately about the impact these programs have on individuals and families — from supporting Fort McMurray wildfire evacuees to helping local seniors return home safely after surgery.
But his biggest message was a call for volunteers. The pandemic severely reduced their volunteer base, and the depot still struggles to cover all shifts. He emphasized that volunteering requires just a few hours a week, is not physically demanding, and is incredibly rewarding. The Red Cross welcomes people from all walks of life, especially those with additional language skills to better serve a diverse community.
Ron closed by encouraging anyone interested — or anyone with family and friends looking to give back — to get in touch. “It’s meaningful work, it’s flexible, and it makes a real difference,” he said.

SERGEANT At Arms Tidbits

John M. – Apparently, Garth and John had to duck out early for golf (priorities!). John also warned us he’ll be missing the next two weeks, hiding out from home renovations. Smart move.

Amanda – Bursting with pride over her smiley nephew, “the happiest kid ever,” who crushed his first milestone. Also, we had a giant carrot cake intended for the last social but the wrong day– Amanda clearly believes this is the best news of the week because she and Graham get the whole cake (hard to argue).

Joyce – Her adventure involved the classic Air Canada experience: a cancellation in the middle of the night. The less said, the better.

Dalbir – Spent a week in smoky Kelowna, then went to a concert featuring two rockers in their 80s who played for 2.5 hours straight. “They killed it — and no, I wasn’t on stage!”

Chris P. – Spoke at an event recently and feels like it shot her to the “next level” in her business. Big energy vibes – we’re expecting world domination soon.

Debbie M. – Reflected on a conversation about pride, strength, and confidence — then forgot her point (relatable!). Her last regatta of the season is this Saturday, rain or shine (mostly rain, apparently).

Bill possibly blah blah blah. But only ChatGPT knows.

Sam Jaffe – Back from Whistler, where his cousin won a trip at auction. He loves talking, but apparently loves following the rules even more. Rule-followers unite!

Michael – Got his new passport photo, which inexplicably came in black-and-white (retro chic!). Also shared a PSA: in a two-hour blitz, police handed out 102 distracted driving tickets, including to makeup-appliers. Stay safe out there.

Garth – Golfing at Mayfair Lakes today, had a flawless Air Canada trip to Ontario (take that, Joyce!), saw old friends, and caught a play at Stratford.

Maryam – Still chasing a refund from summer flight cancellations. Air Canada claims it’s “handled,” but she hasn’t seen a cent.

Anonymous – Also went to Whistler, went mini-golfing, and ran into coworkers. Confirmed: Whistler was the place to be this weekend.

Susan (Workshop) – Reflected on last week’s peer review session — asking tough questions led to surprisingly great insights. Can’t wait to share with the club.

Lawrence – Shared that his son Remi started a new school and made quite the impression as Jack in Jack and the Beanstalk. When it came time to cut down the beanstalk, Remi went full method actor — the class roared with laughter.

Bobby – Whistler veteran (15 years going!) who had a more eventful trip this time: got stuck in traffic behind a car fire, then saw the burned-out vehicle. After that, enjoyed some quiet reflection and started rethinking the “big house” lifestyle.

Elena – Catching up with friends at the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and reconnecting with old pals — feeling nostalgic. Ron brought her into the club for breakfast but expected just the two of them. She calls Ron "brother."

Jeanette – Frustrated at work: her unit now has three “temporary” care spaces that look more permanent than temporary, and she’s not thrilled. Also discovered that new nurses are getting $15-20K signing bonuses — while longtime staff get zip.

Who knows? – Living her best life: her townhouse pool is still open, and she’s been swimming almost every night after work. Peak September relaxation.

Peachy – Had her first Rotary World Help loading experience and loved it! Promises to encourage more Richmond Rotarians to join next time.

Pat – Thanked Elena and Peachy for representing at Rotary World Help and praised Lawrence’s workshop. Her grandson is now 6 feet tall at 15 — she’s very relieved he got her husband’s genes, not hers. Also celebrated a 60-year nursing school reunion at Granville Island Hotel — a weekend full of nostalgia and joy.

Brian – Between curling with his son Adam and selling insurance, Brian is single-handedly keeping both winter sports and actuarial science alive. He’s also still the best-looking guy in the club (just ask him).

Judy – Splitting her time between spoiling the grandkids and single-handedly keeping Richmond’s retail economy afloat. If you see a shopping bag, there’s a good chance Judy’s on the other end of it.

Debbie T. – Ran a smooth meeting like the pro she is. Closed with her trademark, “If there’s nothing more for the good of Rotary, adios amigos!” and left us all smiling.
