Melinda came to roast Debbie and then to honour her! Have a wonderful day everyone.

Larry is back to the land of the living and we are very happy about that. Has had the second shot and glad to be closer to crossing the border. Steve is binging at the movie theatre. Has cancelled a dozen streaming services.

Sam went to the hospital because of seasonal allergies and is now on anti histamines.

Mary Lou is having her second jab, the conference she went to is better in person but was still excellent. Has now booked a number of trips to campsites for the next four months.

Danny took  a small hike through the Coquihalla Canyon with his daughter to teach her landscape photography.

Carolyn has continued reading Rotary Peace Fellowship applications and is very impressed with the candidates. Many applicants are from war torn countries and we are unaware of how devastated these countries are by war.

Dalbir filled us in on the conference on Trust & Estate law set for 2 days and 6 hours per day. It is an onerous task to be the executor of an estate.

Ron is Kal's wing man on the speakers committee, getting his  second shot and golfing next week. Did not say if the two were related. Toured the breweries in East Van, perhaps had more than two shots. Also talked about Ice Cream so maybe a beer float. Tiny bubbles have expanded for Ron.

Judy is sort of golfing today but will definitely have fun and the nachos will be good. two birthdays this weekend to celebrate her sisters and hers(it's not May anymore) who cares! Difficult fathers day coming up but sons will be there.

I related about my anxiety dream of having to go to court the next day with no preparation, no witnesses, no robe and two trials. Took a comedy team through south Saskatchewan instead. Politically incorrect Santa and Riley the Red Nose Reindeer.

Dick had a valve implant which was easier than cataract surgery which was successful but still lack of vision.

Pat was impressed with our Micheal Ghirra speaking on the news. No he was not arrested, it was about opening up the banquet hall soon. Pat was in touch with Belinda who said to keep in touch. 🤞

Susan was just starting her car to go to work when she told us that son Ryan got his first job.

Marg attended a zoom dinner for Chris M.'s retirement party. Loved the charcuterie and reminisced about interviewing Chris however many years(no ones counting) ago in French. The Church is opening on August 15th.

Bobby is continuing to take Mom for walks, watching all the sports, and is in a yo yo contest with the weather over his patio furniture.

Sandra who was supposed to be wine tasting in the Okanagan ending up wine tasting in Langley enjoyed the Glass House. Finally booked on the ferry to visit her sister in Victoria.

Kal wished everyone a happy father's day and can't believe the social distancing (NOT) at the arenas in the US. Can you spell D-E-L-T-A!!! Hope not.

Gordon had a word with his car to make sure it would make it to Surrey. Enjoyed the Board meeting in person.

Garth has wasted three days in Court. Did not join a comedy team. Is going fishing to Pennask Lake and staying at the lodge.

Kathy spent time with Rachel also drinking craft beer. Did not say she ran into Ron. While making spaghetti thought Don was taking notes from the Trust and Estates conference. Turned out to be considering golfing vectors. I am looking for tips.

Elena was celebrating 123 years since the independence of the Philippines. Encourage someone to join the RWHN to make a large contribution and to meet many Rotarians. Dick encouraged her in the beginning and the only woman participating at the time. Sounds like recently too.

Amanda is practicing patience and enjoying home grown lettuce. Just think serenity.

Debbie T. had a safety tip for those hauling trailers. Make sure the hitch is all the way on the ball or else the trailer may come off. Certainly sound dangerous. Rained on the camping trip and a long list of items forgotten. Deb, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Debbie M.  also is golfing, maybe using Don's vectors. getting her second shot next week.

Debbie S. believes in  serenity now. Daughter Nick is living with them after a boating accident. Hope she recovers soon. Watched "Strong" about the Boston Marathon bombing victim who  lost both lower legs.

Our own Danny Salcedo told us about the challenges in organizing an international dental mission where he and his teams have treated and assisted thousands working 10 hour days. The missions provide opportunities to meet new friends and increase cross cultural understanding. His first mission was in March 2010 with oral surgeons, dentists and nurses. Thousands received dental treatment and 844 oral cosmetic surgeries. In 2013 the dental mission provided dental treatments to elementary school children for three weeks. In 2014 Danny and Elena incorporated the non-profit Caring Hearts Dental Society whose motto is "Bringing Smiles to Life". The Society provides many dental and health services and dental supplies and machines with funding from the Board of Directors with assistance from our club.
2013 was a devastating year for the Philippines with an earthquake and a typhoon that caused and estimated $2.9 billion in damages with thousands killed, injured or missing. The Society provided dental and relief operations for 3 weeks creating an oral health network and distributing clothing, food, water and household items. There was a mass feeding project to children and assisting the abused children. Over a thousand dental services were provided. Many suffered from PTSD and there were stress management lectures to typhoon victims. In 2015 the dental mission provided over 3,200 dental procedures with the cooperation of the Philippine Military and Police. There was also a mass feeding project for children. Danny provided services to his fellow volunteers. The 2016 dental mission provided free services to and extractions as well as portable dental equipment and dental health education.  There were 4,396 treatments and Danny led early morning Tai Chi sessions. In 2017 the mission went to elementary schools in Quezon to provide oral hygiene awareness and treated 710 patients. He also went to Masai Mara in Kenya and provide oral hygiene education. In 2018 there was a dental mission to Saragon City with the distribution of medicines and 2,518 dental services and a mass feeding project. The Society also assisted after a volcano eruption that year. In 2019 the Society provided dental services to street kids in Manila as well as a mass feeding program. There were 3,530 dental services provided. In 2020 another volcano erupted and hundreds of thousands evacuated. The Society provided services to thousands following strict covid protocol. There was also a mass feeding for 200 school children. In summary it takes hard work dedication transportation logistics and team work. The volunteers work from 8 - 6 every day but at the end of the day the smiling faces provide fulfillment and inner peace. Danny is planning for next year depending on restrictions. The presentation by Danny was creative and first class. We are both proud and honoured that he is a member of our Club.

Those who want to learn more about the Philippines Independence Day read on.

The annual June 12 observance of Philippine’s Independence Day came into effect after past President Diosdado Macapagal signed the Republic Act No. 4166 regarding this matter on August 4, 1964.  This Act legalized the holiday, which is based on the Declaration of Independence on June 12, 1898 by General Emilio Aguinaldo and Filipino revolutionary forces from the Spanish colonization.  The Philippines’ flag was raised and its national anthem was played for the first time in 1898.  However, liberty was short-lived because Spain and the United States did not recognize the declaration.

The 1898 Treaty of Paris ended the war between Spain and the United States. Spain surrendered the entire archipelago comprising the Philippines to the United States.  The Philippines started a revolt against the United States in 1899(there is a good book about the horrors inflicted by the U.S. on the population during this revolt) and achieved national sovereignty on July 4, 1946, through the Treaty of Manila.  Independence Day was officially observed on July 4 until the Republic Act No. 4166, which set out to move the holiday to June 12, was approved on August 4, 1964.

Speaking of freedom days here is some information about Juneteenth that is also being celebrated. Juneteenth derives its name from June 19, 1865—the day that U.S. General Gordon Granger informed the enslaved individuals of Galveston, Texas, that they were officially free. Issued two-and-a-half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, Granger's decree marked the end of slavery in the rebellious Confederate states. “Although there were enslavers who were aware of the implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation, it wasn’t until June 19, 1865, that it was actually enforced [by] the Union Army,” writes Mary Elliot, curator of American slavery at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture “... It took the creation of the Emancipation Proclamation, the end of the Civil War, and the passage of the 13th Amendment to finally end slavery throughout the nation.”

If you google it you will see that many Southern States including Texas have been celebrating Juneteenth for over a century.

From Rodney to Zsa Zsa to George and to keep it going Bob Hope!!!

You know you're getting old when the candles cost more than the cake.

I grew up with six brothers. That's how I learned to dance - waiting for the bathroom.

My father told me all about the birds and the bees, the liar - I went steady with a woodpecker till I was twenty-one.

I don't feel old - I don't feel anything until noon. Then it's time for my nap.
