As a result of the efforts of the Rotarians of District 5040, over 5,000 eyeglasses were donated and have been shipped to Africa for children. Special thanks to Belinda for her efforts at collecting glasses from Richmond General Hospital.

Bob Shoker is channeling his membership through his daughter Zara who has offered as follows:

Meeting Rules - Suspended for now but keep in mind when out and about.
Let's all keep each other safe by following the protocols below when attending our morning meetings:
1. Use hand sanitizer upon entering and exiting the meeting
2. Maximum of 3 people per table
3. Maintain physical distancing of 2 meters at all times (including when at the buffet)
4. No singing of O'Canada
5. No passing around of sign up sheets, cards, etc
6. No money will be accepted during Sergeant at Arms
(The Board strongly encourages members to annually e-transfer a minimum of $102/Rotarian to cover S@A contributions for the year)

Sergeant At Arms Tidbits
Mary Lou drove back from the cabin on Labour Day to partake the next day in labouring.
Elena reported that her 52 skids of cleaning products had been donated to nursing homes and gratefully received. Good Job!!! Elena!
Ron walked the sea wall to the Tea House Restaurant. Achieved his 10,000 steps to wear off the calories from the meal. Did you have the New York Cheese Cake?
Bill reported on Mark Phillips who is doing well in Nelson and as harvest season is coming to a close we may see Mark. Be calm, safe and wear a Rotary Mask.
Peter is off to the Toulameen and fresh air. Cough cough!
Judy has been walking the beach, attending BBQ, and hanging out with BFF Chris B. Apparently there was an adventure in the pool. See Chris B.*
Bobby had an up and down week. There was a wedding that was not on the calendar but reminded by the couple. Rushed to Save On and performed a miracle. Sadly Banquet Halls now closed until further notice.
Debbie T. working hard on school openings and reporting that everything is ready. Fingers and eyes are crossed. Sadly daughter in law has lost her job likely permanently.
Deb M. had a nice beach BBQ and Moroccan dinner for daughters birthday. Claimed all with social distancing. I say ask the crows about that!!!!!
Gordon reported that something significant happens in every DGs year and for Dave Hamilton it is as tough as it gets with Covid. But the tough get going!
Danny took a picture of the corn harvest and hiked once more this time in Golden Ears park where he came across a movie set and offered to be an extra. It may have been about Ninja's - don't pick a fight with Danny.
Susan our sparkling angel, was up a 6 AM working on the Mid Summer Art show at Lansdown Mall and has been busy busy and wants everyone to come and see.
Garth joined others in welcoming Marg back. Also is finally now rehearsing in 1.25 hours and in groups of 50 in masks. I was a member for five years before I learned that Chor Leoni had nothing to do with the godfather.
Marg reported her hip surgery was successful and toured Ron's property and several species of fruit trees. No mention of Zucchini or Plums.
Sam was spotted chewing bubble gum and a bubble may have burst on his computer cam. All of that aside he has been looking at an app that shows the constellations.
Dick said it was nice to see Marg and Dick, it was nice to see you.
Chris P. reported that she had danced with our DG Dave at the Gala. She no longer goes to her cabin with children and diapers but alone and with the cat. Did she call her mom "Babs"? Her diaper changer - Chris P. then the diaper changee.
Carolyn thanked all of us "Old Dogs" for paying by etransfer. Woof Woof but has Kal paid?
Joyce has been playing a lot of golf with no report of GD or WTF. But expressed concern for son and family in California near the fires and smoke. Very close and very concerning.
Brian has spent a wonderful trip on a house boat with the family and claimed, without evidence, that he can still wake board. Brian related a story some years back of how good DG Dave looked after having received chemo some. Dave told Brian and "yes, thanks and I still have more hair then you." Brian, I can say, with video evidence, he still does have more hair than you.
Pat reported that she has been watching tennis and regularly golfing with Jean and Garth joined them this week. Again no report of GD or WTF but I cannot imagine Pat having these issues on the golf course.
Malinda is working a lot filling in for vacationing employees. Chris P. is apparently naughty. Like we didn't know. Tom is apparently Pat - oops! long time customer. She is loosing teeth and visiting dental office. Notes indicate hash browns and teeth - not pretty.
*See above - Chris B. was helping Judy's grand kids across the hot tub and slipped. No more working ear buds. What were you listening to? Drove 5 days to Alberta to pick up Grandchildren and had a great tour of BC. Wondered about now having to stop drinking by 10 PM. Would your ear buds like it to be earlier? He asked innocently.
Sandra went for dinner at Global - Black and Blue. Heard an alarm saw the flashing lights and three firemen came out of the elevator. Restaurant employee came out to herd them into the restaurant where they got to climb the stairs to the roof top restaurant. Sadly no offer from the firemen to carry them up.
Kathy also played a lot of golf. Not afraid of acronyms.
Debbie S. expressed her concern for the Ghirras. Welcomed back Marg. Expressed empathy like a president should. Thanked friend Amanda --------- sorry did not get what for. But did a lot of crazy hikes at Whistler uphill both ways.

Dave Hamilton from the Tsawwassen club is our District Governor this Rotary Year. He blames Garth for the position he now finds himself in as he followed Garth as ADG(who doesn't blame Garth for something). He has a love/hate relationship with Chris P and Bill(who doesn't). He has had fun at our Gala(who hasn't) and developed a life long friendships internationally through Rotary. He believes that Rotary opens many opportunities. Dave introduced his board and recommended that if we needed ideas assistance or had comments to please contact any of them. Dave then introduced our International President Holger Knaack who amongst many qualities wears cool glasses and we watched a video of his speech. IP Knaack explained how he was nervous about the responsibilities of leadership but looked forward to sharing the opportunities of growth and ongoing projects. Instead of numbers of new members he wanted Rotary to focus on growing organically and to be stronger. He said Rotary was financially strong and is recognized as one of the world's best charities. Rotary is changing and there are now more Asian Rotarians than North American and in some areas Rotary is aging and declining. He said we must use this moment of change to grow Rotary with our shared values of service above self, integrity and the four way test. Growing will require self reflection.
Dave than spoke of Rotary growing through it strengths but also to recognize that new clubs do not have to operate in the traditional way as long as the core values remain. He talked about the different forms clubs were taking such as satellite clubs and e-clubs. Rotary has come to realize that a Rotary Club should operate to fit its members. Rotary exists to enrich the lives of others and ourselves. Rotary must continue to be a pioneer or it will get left behind. We need to embrace change. Dave then told us about the upcoming District 5040 Conference in Terrace May 20 - 23 2021. There is a great list of speakers and scheduled events with the Nishga Nation. If the event cannot take place there is a Plan 1A where the event will be streamed live from Terrace with local gatherings throughout the district. There is an early bird rate of $299.00 and go to Rotary5040.0rg to see the highlights. Dave said we need to work together for our communities and ourselves to stay ahead of the change. We need to be not just evolutionary but revolutionary and creative to be change makers in this challenging time. Dave and his district board are open to ideas. Dave has been impressed with how clubs have engaged members with zoom and virtual fundraising. We can get interesting speakers on zoom from anywhere and RI has a list of available speakers. The district is putting on a fundraising seminar on October 3rd. We can encourage membership through back yard socials in small groups and we should tell prospects what Rotary has done for us. Gordon hopes we can all be in Terrace next year.
Meanderings
Think about it. Knowledge is knowing tomatoes are a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put tomatoes into a fruit salad. But it is alright to put them into Bocconcini Salad - don't believe me - google it.
The tomato is the edible, often red berry of the plant Solanum lycopersicum, commonly known as a tomato plant. The species originated in western South America and Central America. The Nahuatl (the language used by the Aztecs) word tomatl gave rise to the Spanish word tomate, from which the English word tomato derived. Tomatoes are a significant source of umami flavor.
As if that wasn't enough a tomato is a male tomato and a tomata is a female tomato - JK. You say tamato I say tomato.

TODAYS CHUCKLE
Studies show cows produce more milk when the farmer talks to them. It’s a case of in one ear and out the udder.
A butcher is working, and really busy. He notices a dog in his shop and shoos him away. Later, he notices the dog is back again. He walks over to the dog, and notices the dog has a note in his mouth. The butcher takes the note, and it reads, "Can I have 12 sausages and a leg of lamb, please."
The butcher looks, and lo and behold, in the dog's mouth, there is a ten dollar bill. So the butcher takes the money, puts the sausages and lamb in a bag, and places it in the dog's mouth. The butcher is very impressed, and since it's closing time, he decides to close up shop and follow the dog.
So, off he goes. The dog is walking down the street and comes to a crossing. The dog puts down the bag, jumps up and presses the crossing button. Then he waits patiently, bag in mouth, for the lights to change. They do, and he walks across the road, with the butcher following.
The dog then comes to a bus stop, and starts looking at the timetable. The butcher is in awe at this stage. The dog checks out the time sits on one of the seats to wait for the bus. Along comes a bus. The dog walks to the front of the bus, looks at the number, and goes back to his seat. Another bus comes. Again goes and looks at the number, notices it's the right bus, and climbs on. The butcher, by now open-mouthed, follows him onto the bus. The bus travels thru town and out to the suburbs. Eventually the dog moves to the front of the bus, and standing on his hind legs, pushes the button to stop the bus. The dog gets off, groceries still in his and the butcher still following. They walk down the road, and the dog approaches a house. He walks up the path, and drops the groceries on the step. Then he walks down the path, takes a big run, and throws himself -whap!- against the door. He goes back down the path, takes another run, and thro himself -whap!- against the door again! There's no answer at the door, so the dog goes back down the path, jumps up on a narrow wall, and walks along the perimeter of the house. He gets to a window, and bangs his head against it several times. He walks back, jumps off the wall, and waits at the door. The butcher watches as a big guy opens the door, and starts laying into the dog, really yelling at him. The butcher runs up and stops the guy. "What the heck are you doing? This dog is a genius. He could be on TV, for God's sake!"
To which the guy responds, "Clever, my ass. This is the second time this week he's forgotten his key!"
