The club in order to pursue reconciliation with our local Indigenous Bands will make the following announcement at the beginning of each meeting:

We acknowledge that the lands on which we gather, including the surrounding waters, comprise the ancestral traditional territories of the Musqueam, Tsleil-Waututh (slay-wa-tooth) and Tsawwassen peoples.”

For those of you interested in gaining a better understanding of where we are at as a nation with respect to truth and reconciliation with the Indigenous peoples of Canada,  Kathy Moir suggests dipping into Rupert Ross's book: Indigenous Healing: Exploring Traditional Paths. Ross is a retired assistant Crown Attorney for the District of Kenora, Ontario. It's the best book she's read for non-indigenous people to gain understanding into the Indigenous world view and experience.  A very helpful book.  She has a few copies to lend out to anyone interested. She will deliver. Contact:  moirkm57@yahoo.ca

It was International Tartan Day so we had a bagpipe Oh Canada, which was not audible so Debbie S. has promised to play it again next week. Whether you like the sound of bagpipes or not. Think Amazing Grace.

Please direct any questions to me or a board member of your choosing and we will discuss any and all questions or concerns during our board meeting. Also please refer anyone who may be interested in attending a meeting or joining the club.

Bobby had a Birthday Party for his wife (I think he mentioned daughter too, so you choose) and showed a slide show honouring her. He thanked all of the women in his life for all the special things they do.

Kal had a nice dinner on the patio at seasons and then asked Aaron Rogers about some field goal. He should have asked Ray Finkle!!!! "The laces were out!"

Gordon has had his shot and there was no waiting for him. Although there were other old people. He claims older than him. Ron must have been there. Did not say a shot of what?????

Garth says virtual rehearsals are going to start for Chor Leone in hopes of concerts in the fall. Quiet at work.

Sandra went to Costco, no social distancing inside. Got her few things and left. Wondered how Costco can serve food inside. We need to ask our deep state agent from the parking lot.

Kathy is celebrating grand babies second birthday. Don's golf has improved incredibly and after one round in the Master's he is only a couple strokes off the pace. Gets her jab Friday or is it a shot too???

Amanda had a good week and is now up at 4:30 AM for Yoga with a friend in Saskatchewan.

Micheal celebrated sons second birthday and daughters first. Was going to celebrate at the Cactus Club but settled for take out instead. After watching all of the El Chapo series Micheal now needs to know how to launder and of course what better way then to learn from 35 episodes of Ozark. Claimed he is going to start gardening? a different euphemism for doing the laundry? Perhaps says Lady Whistledown.

Bill is running all day in purple. Whatever that means?

Peter bought a car for his Mexican workers and found that it is almost as difficult as buying a house. Negotiations led to a wash in the price. What house isn't complete without a vintage Rolls Royce care of Dalbir. Let the bidding war begin.

Ron claimed he had nothing profound to say but had managed to straighten out his credit card fraud problems.

I am half Scottish and now am scheduled for a shot on April 20, I intend to have a shot of Scotch afterwards to celebrate. I come from a long line of Dewars on the maternal side.

Chris B.'s puppy had surgery and Sophie needs to learn to stop jumping on people. It is what they like to do.

Judy has enjoyed the weather. Was able to meet with family outdoors at a park where she accidentally had brought a bottle of wine to celebrate Ralph's birthday. She has enjoyed watching three seasons of something on Brit Box??? I think.

Dick reported that it was 19 degrees in Saskatchewan, his golf game is improving. Even though he has not played in two years. Barb had her shot - not clear whether vaccine or whiskey. Dick is no longer president of the strata council but still on it - the council that is.

Pat enjoyed the beautiful sunrise and has had her shot. This time I am guessing vaccine for sure.

Debbie T. had her shot at the pharmacy got a terrible headache and pain all over the next day. Fortunately by day two she was okay. 26 ounce flu? 2nd Birthday for family dog who got a cake. Deb cooked for the rest of the family who came to pick up their share for Easter. Debbie T. is also a Scot.

Danny has been travelling around the Vancouver area taking what I am sure are beautiful photos of the blossoms and thought the spring is amazing - as are Danny's photos.

Dalbir thought the idea of allowing restaurants to open patios may need to be rethought as the patios are packed. He went for quite awhile without knowing anyone with Covid now knows 2 people. Pharmacies apparently have a good supply of vaccine and the one at the airport is not busy if you can get an appointment and fall in the correct age bracket. Rolls is apparently up for bids.

Elena went for a walk in the wind. Got her vaccine on Sunday. She is picking up furniture for donations and has sanitizer for donation in Mexico.

Debbie M. is looking forward to traversing the virtual El Camino and others as Debbie S. disclosed in an undisclosable conversation before the meeting began which may have also included the Iceland Ring Road. But no one is saying. Debbie is taking an online Salsa course so maybe she can dance with Manuel while daughter Samia is delivering new grandchild next October. Miles will be busy eating black forest cake. Apparently a birthday favourite. Don't get in his way. Remember the Ghirra's only delivered one meal to Deb and Miles, or at least Miles thought so.

Marg is doing yoga once a week. Had her shot on Wednesday - no explanation needed here. Has empirically tested that it takes a week for three people to eat a Christmas turkey. The same amount of time to eat an Easter Ham. Isolation rules! Someone had to take one for the team.

Melinda managed to survive an awesome Easter Egg hunt with Willow where the eggs were rehidden 4 times. What madness. Speaking of madness, John is either the ultimate beast or is riding one. He apparently is the battery powered energizer bunny, beast or not.

Mary Lou was in isolation at her cabin. She also had never ending Ham for Easter. Has started golfing weekly at Musqueam. Oscar came for a quick zoom visit.

Debbie S. was going to go to Whistler but shut down so made some day trips. Sat outside with friends and had cheesecake. Although her dog Juno turned 2 and he/she might have eaten the cheesecake. (No reference to actor Page intended). Just don't know the dogs gender.

From this weeks guest journalist Gordon Dalglish:

This morning's speaker was Moonyeen (Moonie) King. Moonie was born in London, England and is of Irish/English descent. She spent lots of time in Europe and Ireland in the fashion industry. After marrying Perry, an American, they spent time in Hong Kong and the Far East including a 2 year stint in Vietnam, during the war.

20 Years ago, they relocated to the Lake Chapala area of Mexico where Moonie became involved with the local Rotary Club - and Perry with the Shriners. For the last 13 years, Mloonie has been the face of the Tepehua Barrio (village). She founded the Tepehua Community Centre and remains today as its President. When Gord met Moonie at the Ajijic Rotary Club, he soon saw  that Moonie was a driving force in this village. She saw the poverty and the lack of any sort of support that villagers got - especially young mothers and their children - and decided to do something about it.

Starting off as a weekly "food kitchen" with a handful of very suspicious villagers, it has grown into a thriving community centre - serving over 200 Friday lunches (Comida - kind of Brunch) to the mothers and children of Tepehua.. But the Centre is not limited to that. It now teaches sewing and needlework (the ladies sell their work at local markets and events), offers education subsidies for school children and more recently, has been able to sponsor and support students from the village to college/university. It runs a thriving Bazaar/consignment store which supports many of the centre's initiatives. The motto of the Centre has been "Helping a village to help itself".  Now most of the activities are self-supporting and that includes the Maternal Health Centre - which received a major donation from the Sunrise club.. The club also funded several homes to be renovated by replacing tarps for roofs with bricks and mortar and supplying Mosquito nets when Dengue Fever broke out in the area.

The medical centre has remained open during the COVID restrictions and is, literally, a life-saver for the many needs of the villagers. Clean Water and Sanitation is now the primary goal of the Centre. Though bottled water is available, it is completely outside the ability of the villagers to pay retail prices. So a Reverse Osmosis unit has been set up, enabling villagers to buy clean water at a fraction of the cost. Rotary clubs in the Lake Chapa area, as well as in the US and Canada have been strong supporters of the Centre - and that continues today.

Moonie's current task is to develop a sanitation plan for the village. Open defecation is common and part of her plan is to enable the construction of sanitary communal latrines; as the provision of in-house toilets is still a very long way off. Every initiative that Moonie has commenced in Tepehua started off as a spark of an idea in Moonies mind - but thanks to the generosity of donors - especially Rotary - these sparks have brought amazing results and enabled the villagers, particularly the women and mothers, to hold their heads high and become contributing members of their community.

Moonie and Perry had aimed to settle in Lake Chapala and enjoy a peaceful retirement. But that is one spark that has yet to come to be achieved!

To see more of the amazing work done at the Tepehua Centro Comunitario - see:  www.tepehua.org

Thankyou Gordon for filling in.

Meanderings

Because nobody asked me:

Tartan Day is a North American celebration of Scottish heritage on April 6, the date on which the Declaration of Arbroath was signed in 1320. It originated in Canada in the mid-1980s. It spread to other communities of the Scottish diaspora in the 1990s. In Australia the similar International Tartan Day is held on July 1, the anniversary of the repeal of the 1747 Act of Proscription that banned the wearing of tartan.

On March 9, 1986, a 'Tartan Day' to promote Scottish heritage in Canada was proposed at a meeting of the Federation of Scottish Clans in Nova Scotia. Jean Watson, President of Clan Lamont, petitioned provincial legislatures to recognize April 6 as Tartan Day. The first such proclamation was by Nova Scotia in April 1987. On December 19, 1991, in response to action initiated by the Clans & Scottish Societies of Canada, the Ontario Legislature passed a resolution proclaiming April 6 as Tartan Day, following the example of other Canadian provinces.

Following the Canadian example, Tartan day is now celebrated in four other countries, USA (1998), Australia (1989), Argentina (2006), and Scotland (2004).

And because we need to know what the Declaration of Arbroath was your editor GTSed it and came up with this:

The Declaration of Arbroath  is the name usually given to a letter, dated 6 April 1320 at Arbroath, written by Scottish barons and addressed to Pope John XXII. It constituted King Roberts I's response to his excommunication for disobeying the pope's demand in 1317 for a truce in the First War of Scottish Independence. The letter asserted the antiquity of the independence of the Kingdom of Scotland, denouncing English attempts to subjugate it.

Or simply put, the Scottish Declaration of Independence. Maybe coming soon to a United Kingdom near you.

RIP Prince Phillip 1921 - 2021. Best line from Prince I have read that he made on his 50th wedding anniversary. "I think the main lesson we have learnt is that tolerance is the one essential ingredient in any happy marriage ..... You can take it from me, the Queen has the quality of tolerance in abundance."

As Covid is on the uptick along with hospitalizations it is maybe time for some nurse levity.

A nursing assistant, a floor nurse and a charge nurse from a small nursing home were taking a lunch break in the break room. In walks, a lady dressed in silk scarves and wearing large polished-stone jewelry. “I am Gina the Great,” stated the lady. “I am so pleased with the way you have taken care of my aunt that I will now grant the next three wishes!” With a wave of her hand and a puff of smoke, the room was filled with flowers, fruit, and bottles of drink, proving that she did have the power to grant wishes before any of the nurses could think otherwise.
The nurses quickly argued among themselves as to which one would ask for the first wish. Speaking up, the nursing assistant wished first. “I wish I were on a tropical island beach, with single, well-built men feeding me fruit and tending to my every need.” With a puff of smoke, the nursing assistant was gone.
The floor nurse went next. “I wish I were rich and retired, and spending my days in my own warm cabin at a ski resort with well-groomed men feeding me cocoa and doughnuts.” With a puff of smoke, she too was gone.
“Now, what is the last wish?” asked the lady.
The charge nurse said, “I want those two ambitious nurses back on the floor at the end of the lunch break!”

You should always be kind to nurses. Remember they choose your catheter size.
