The flower basket fundraiser resulted in the participation of 103 customers and the sale of 217 baskets totaling gross proceeds or $15,540 of which the club will net just under $10,000 as the margin worked out to more than 50%. Great Job Peter and thanks to the committee.

Announcements

Bill advised that both the long term and short term in person exchange programs have been delayed until 2022. However if we wish to take part in the shorter summer exchange we will need to indicate by September of this year. There will however be a virtual exchange this summer for 4 - 6 youths in the same time zone. The cost is under $200 and open to everyone. This makes the program open to those who cannot travel as a result of disability or otherwise.

Debbie Murphy is requesting names for external and internal Paul Harris awards. The Club was unanimous in nominating Dave Hamilton for all he has done for Rotary and our club. He has set a courageous example of continuing to contribute  to both the Conversations for Peace and the District 5040 Conference while battling the advanced stages of cancer.

Peter reported that there are 106 orders and that delivery will be complex. 26 Rotarians have volunteered to assist with delivery.

Susan Ness from her home instead of the Costco parking lot.

sergeant  At Arms Tidbits

Mary Lou started golf lessons (my computer froze) did not have touch tone gift certificates? Moved the camper to the cabin and it was nice to have a fridge.

Kathy reported that Don hurt his back but went to the driving range anyway. She stole Joycee's plant. Her brother's pace maker apparently failed but fortunately the leads were repaired.

Peter's 11 year old grandson has learned the concept of incentive. Instead of $15 per hour for planting small seeds in 144 cells he was going to be paid piece meal for each crate of seeds. Production increased so pay went up to $25 per hour. Visions of play station and a Ferrari danced in grandson's head.

Marg reported that Ben has a job with lay back snacks scooping weighing and packing snacks for breakfast club. The phone was broken so the hiring call was missed but Ben started Tuesday. Hurray!

Kal wished everyone a happy Passover. Very sad to hear that Dave Hamilton has stage 4 cancer and moved for the external Paul Harris for Dave.

Debbie M. has been busy at work and taking on line classes and forgot what she was going to say. We never did get back to her. Oops!

Bobby's Mom has been vaccinated. Daughter had a birthday. His previous root canal migrated to the tooth beside it so he needs another one. Almost as painful as the challenge of dealing with brothers at the Ballroom. We all came from the same set of parents??? Realllly?

Michael had enjoyed his sons birthday.

Joyce is getting in lots of golf and bridge. Tight lipped about her golf mates stories. We need an investigative journalist who will get the bottom of the rumours or at least make them up.

Dick was vaccinated while being in a line with old people. His brother is getting heavy chemo.

I am having my last Anthropology exam and daughter Darcy is motivating our 2021 summer Olympics rowing team.

Judy had a great week in Sooke with walks along the beach and did manage to fill a glass of wine by herself. Car broke down so stuck at home with the car back Friday.

Melinda did not have much to report but celebrated that we have different points of view.

Elena celebrated her birthday with friends. Will be speaking at an event regarding Philippine and Canadian trade with the previous Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines.

Gordon reported that the window replacement in his complex has started and will take several months. Provided an update on Dave Hamilton's health which was not good.

Chris P. has been going downtown for work. It was good to get out although masks inside. Has booked a flight to Hamilton and will drive back with Donnie.

Pat wished Gordon a happy birthday. Her vaccination will be April 2. Her granddaughter is now a teenager. Playing tennis and taking golf lessons.

Sam has moved and gave us a virtual tour of his new home. Gave 1% credit to Moose for the move and 0% to Bill. Sam is very excited about the new condo particularly because you do not always know where the other person is in it. No tube either.

Bill wished Gordon a happy 87th birthday then sadly reported a poker buddy Rudy who was under 50 contracted Covid earlier this month and died 3 days later.

Garth who unfroze himself was having a drug induced hallucination watching Bill flash between yellow and purple like a neon sign. I will have what he is having 👹

Sandra is excited because the whole family will be together outside under heaters for pizza and wine.

Dalbir told us how much Dave Hamilton was involved in spear heading the peace talks, perservering and doing the best in can in very difficult circumstances.

Susan took this week off - hence not in Costco parking lot. Said that DG Dave was strongly motivated for peace. She found it an amazing experience to work with different groups at the conference. Mom has been vaccinated and is cautiously optimistic there will be a birthday celebration at Moxie's.

Amanda's Grandfather has now passed away peacefully and there were many wonderful stories about what a kind and gentle man he was. His saying "keep your chin up unless you're singing".

Carolyn felt embarrassed because she and daughter followed ex's advice to attend a vaccine clinic at the end of the day in case there were doses left over and unused. Ex had successfully been vaccinated this way. If there is a possibility the doses would be wasted I say Waste Not Want Not!

Debbie S. says niece has sold her first item on line.

No speaker today so Debbie led us through club business. Significant dates coming up.

April 11th District Awards
May 6th Facilitated Peace Presentation for our club. It will take the whole meeting.
May 13th RWHN AGM
June 4 - 5  Rotary District Conference. A moving presentation from Dave Hamilton for the Conference emphasizing the special theme of family and in particular Rotary Family. You can register at 2021 District Conference | Rotary District 5040 (rotary5040.org)
The best honour you can make for Dave is to register for the conference and help make it a success.

Gordon advised there is a Roast Toast and Tribute organized for Dave.

Rotary's new area of focus is the environment and these has been featured in the recent Rotary Magazine. Gordon will look through the pending global grants and see if there is one that we can contribute to.

We have supported many local projects including Feeducate, Sean's gift of sharing, Ghirra Toy Drive, Homeless connect and others. But we are looking for more local projects and members of the club should explore organizations for projects in Richmond and bring them to the Club.

Amanda and the social committee are going to organize a clean up walk around Garden City lands with the date and details to be announced.

The club in order to pursue reconciliation with our local Indigenous Bands will make the following announcement at the beginning of each meeting:
We acknowledge that the lands on which we gather, including the surrounding waters, comprise the ancestral traditional territories of the Musqueam, Tsleil-Waututh (slay-wa-tooth) and Tsawwassen peoples.”

The Club will take immediate steps to award an external Paul Harris to Dave Hamilton.

Meanderings

Seeing as how we are acknowledging First Nations there is a statue of this Canadian First Nations member in a Park in Okanagan Falls just 3 kilometres from our cabin on Skaha Lake.

Saddle Bronc Riding • Inducted 2013 into the Rodeo Hall of Fame

Considered by many to be the greatest Canadian rodeo cowboy of all time, Kenny McLean, an Okanagan Native from British Columbia, had a career distinguished by its volume, versatility and singular consistency. The PRCA Rookie of the Year in 1961, McLean won the saddle bronc riding world championship a year later and went on to qualify for the National Finals Rodeo a total of nine times (1961-65, 1967-69, 1971).

As a mark of his consistency, he never missed winning an average check at the NFR in an era when the payouts only went six deep. He won the saddle bronc riding average title three times (1964, 1968 and 1971), finished second once, fourth twice and sixth three times.

In 77 rides at the NFR, he was bucked off only five times.

McLean also qualified for the NFR in tie-down roping in 1972 – the year he won the Canadian tie-down roping, steer wrestling and all-around championships. Overall he won four Canadian titles in the all-around and five in saddle bronc riding.

That sort of versatility twice won him the Linderman Award (1967, 1969), given annually to the cowboy who displays the highest level of excellence at both ends of the arena.

McLean never lost his love of the sport and never stopped competing. He was on his team roping horse waiting to compete at a senior rodeo in Taber, Alberta, in 2002 when he suffered a fatal heart attack.

The local magazine Skaha Matters has historical pieces in it each week and speculated that Kenny McLean was such a good horse back rider partly because he rode his horse to school in Okanagan Falls from McLean Creek which flows just a walk a way from our place.

I bought my mother in law earrings that say enter on one and exit on the other. Why did you do that? Because everything I say goes in one ear and out the other.

I told my suitcase there would be no travelling this year. Now I am dealing with emotional baggage

You can never lose a homing pigeon – if your homing pigeon doesn’t come back then what you’ve lost is a pigeon.

As I sat, strapped in my seat waiting during the countdown, one thought kept crossing my mind ....every part of this rocket was supplied by the lowest bidder.
