Our Speakers are from the Heart of Richmond Aids Society and provided us with an update of their operations particularly in this time of Covid 19. Carl reminded us of the beginnings of the society in the 1980s with a small group of volunteers and currently how covid has had a big impact their delivery of services.
Manisha explained her role as a one on one and group counsellor and how she assists their members through applications for government services and navigating the regulations. She explained two of their services. GAP which is a grocery assistance program providing grocery cards for their members given out at the time they receive their welfare cheques. Because of the current pandemic there has been an influx in the need for support. Manisha mentioned that Aids Vancouver had provided them with a generous donation of grocery bags. She has been involved in home delivery. She also talked about the Supplementary Health Fund that was intended for big ticket items such as Christmas or Medications. Members would receive a $150 allocation per year which is down from $300. She was finding that members were having to use their cards early and for groceries instead.
Carl then spoke again about how many of their members are aging and their requirements are changing all in the face of other sources of funding drying up. He also explained how because of covid they are unable to attend the schools to provide educational and information services to students.
Belinda encouraged them to apply to our club for assistance in her thankyou.
