Jennifer Jones July 10 – Malcom Brodie will be speaking at Rotary Peace Day in Richmond from 9 – 10 a.m. at Garden City Community Arboretum. We need to get our tents there. Susan Ness will take photos. Chris M. is unable to attend.
A list of projects was passed around, summarizing 2021 through 2022 to date – these will be added to our website as a summary and reference.
sergeant At Arms Tidbits
Mary Lou had a great time at Feed U Cate golf tournament and also recently presented two scholarships at the Chan Centre. The weekend at the cabin enjoyed good weather and there were not too many mosquitoes. She’ll be here in person next Thursday.
Dick almost missed this morning as last week was the worst since covid. Both he and Barb tested positive on the weekend, proof that you can still get it despite the vaccinations. Rising covid numbers may be in the picture. But he’s with us!
Susan is sorry to hear about Dick’s covid and tells us to watch out for the summer flu, too! She will miss next week as she starts at 7 a.m. She will be going to Jennifer Jones, hoping to have our tents and will take photos. She had a great holiday and thinks that Ryan is all set up for SFU in the fall.
Amanda thanks everyone for the hair competition votes, she’s now in second place and it finishes at 8 p.m. Her heart rate is increasing every time she looks at the stats. Graham is coming back at the end of the month. She’s happy to be 5 years in Rotary!
Bobby ran on the seawall but lost his fob and had left his phone in the car, so had to rerun the 5km back looking for it. Called BCAA. Mother Nature is watering his garden. His wife is visiting their daughter in Toronto.
Chris M. asks for help setting up the rotary tents on July 10 and thanks Susan for taking photos of the Jennifer Jones event. Her daughter, Olivia has a new position as Science and Sustainability consultant for the school district. They celebrated the event by going to Riley’s Fish and Steak Restaurant at the foot of Burrard.
Pat read about dismantling the barge at Sunset Beach, so she drove down to see it, but there was a crowd looking at it and the traffic was horrendous, so she just drove by.
Larry had a great holiday in NY and Toronto – 33º plus weather, the wedding was fabulous with sisters and his mother is in a retirement centre and kind of accepting it. As Larry broke bones in his foot months ago, he has now further damaged it so is hobbling with a cane. Bad news from the biopsy, the cancer is back and he is seeing surgeon this morning and is confident it will go well. We are with you, Larry!
Debbie M. celebrated her anniversary in Penticton last week. Miles had bought her an e-bike for her birthday, so she was happily riding it, moved out of the way for people and hit a rut, her bike fell over on her, and she hit her back and side on a beam on the bridge! She has a sore side and soft tissue damage but is healing. Ebikes are heavy!!
Judy spent 4 days on her sister’s boat at Otter Bay, Ganges and Telegraph Harbour which brought back lots of childhood memories. It poured rain on Sunday when they were supposed to fly out on a small plane which was cancelled. As she had to get home to babysit there was lots of reorganizing with Randy booking a Harbour Air plane which flew very close to the water. The two busy days with the boys were tiring so she made up for it by going to Provence Marinaside with the girls.
Garth thinks ebikes should be licensed. He was in Whistler last week with visitors, and golfing but today won’t see Mr. Green for the meeting.
Gord is used to the rain and happy he won’t have to wash the car (thanks to a big swoosh). He is sympathetic to Larry as he still has his own cancer, but under control and fluctuating.
Peter is still thinking about his fishing trip in May when his boat bounced upside down after the trailer hitting a rut (not a rat) – thankfully there was no traffic around. Getting a tow was interesting – Mario’s – but because he was a non-member, Mario wanted insurance info and the towing cost was $1600 from Yale to Hope. In the end, his insurance was good for replacement and he now has his new boat waiting for initial voyage.
Marg went to an exciting Canadians baseball game, complete with fireworks. They had a Sunday family dinner outside, with rats (not ruts) running along the fence. Kinky Boots was fabulous. She has gift certificates for Bombay Kitchen and is watching Wimbledon.
Kal loved Pat’s loud voice today. He also loves Gord and Garth’s matching sweaters. He thinks there will be a Man Cave meeting coming up for Larry.
Bill ran 16 km and didn’t lose his keys.
Sam spent Canada Day in Tsawwassen with Moose trying to play spike ball. He went to Weird Al and loved his original hits. He won’t be here next week as will be doing a Cognitive Behaviour Training Session – looking for guinea pigs to practise with – any takers?
Sandra enjoyed the Butchart Gardens and Elvis the movie and introduced Elvis to Britney who didn’t really know his story. When ties were needed for the wedding, they went shopping at the Bay but there were no ties to be found, very few formal suits then they found one tie at Nordstrom’s for $270. Even Harry Rosen didn’t have any. Moore’s had ties for Brian, but nothing for the boys. The tie shopping is done, though, as they went back to the Bay.
Michael is back, had friends from London and was playing tourist. They noticed how clean the city is. Netflix is on for tonight after two months and they are going to start Ozark, then Who Killed Sarah? He is thinking of the shooting on July 4th in the States, sad that it’s getting more common and close to normal events. “Thanks” for the responsibility to be the tech person.
Chris B. is in the act of putting on makeup for another 8 hour class, so no video. She loves our table arrangement. She has had great teaching days and is happy it’s in person, and also happy that it will be finished at the end of next week.
Debbie T. says the chaos has left her home as Charlie the retriever has left and the cats are moving back in. It was a good time, but the carpet machine is doing its work. Larry is on her shirt every year as she does Tour de Cure or ride for cancer and needs to do the fundraising for this year.
Melinda says Larry is a fighter and is in our thoughts and prayers. Thanks to Sandra for the waffles. She went to Victoria but left her wallet and tried to pay with nothing, then got ‘the wallet’ app on her phone. She is heading to the States on Friday to see family for the first time in 3 years, for a wedding and the grandchildren will be coming to meet family. John had melanoma under his eye a few years ago and the spot came back and he had it removed again – no complaining, and is binging TV and has to go to the office on Tuesday for an assessment. She put echo paving on the back patio so that the grandkids can fall without hurting themselves and it will be good for John too!

Did you know this about waffles?
Waffles trace all the way back to ancient Greece where they were flat cakes called obleios, cooked between two hot metal plates, the earliest waffle irons. By the middle ages, these cakes, made form flour, milk or water, and sometimes eggs became known as wafers and continued in their popularity.
By the 13th century, the craftsmen started embellishing the metal cooking places with designs ranging from family crests, to landscapes to religious imagery rather than the classic grid pattern we know today. When crusaders returned with spices like cinnamon and ginger, these flavors made their way into wafer batter. So too did cream, honey, butter and leavening agents that resulted in thicker, doughier products that much more closely resembled the modern waffle.
Wafers were sold by street vendors in 14th century England. These waferers (or gaufriers as they were known in France) would gather at church doors on holy days to sell their wares in such numbers, chaos often ensued as they set up stalls to bake their wares fresh and sell them piping hot. France’s Charles IX went so far as to pass a law that waferers had to stand at least eight feet apart to sell their wares. (Early social distancing, anyone?)
