Please provide Debbie M. with your nominees for Internal and External Paul Harris Awards.

Bill advised that both the long term and short term in person exchange programs have been delayed until 2022. However if we wish to take part in the shorter summer exchange we will need to indicate by September of this year. There will however be a virtual exchange this summer for 4 - 6 youths in the same time zone. The cost is under $200 and open to everyone. This makes the program open to those who cannot travel as a result of disability or otherwise.

The club in order to pursue reconciliation with our local Indigenous Bands will make the following announcement at the beginning of each meeting:

We acknowledge that the lands on which we gather, including the surrounding waters, comprise the ancestral traditional territories of the Musqueam, Tsleil-Waututh (slay-wa-tooth) and Tsawwassen peoples.”

For those of you interested in gaining a better understanding of where we are at as a nation with respect to truth and reconciliation with the Indigenous peoples of Canada,  Kathy Moir suggests dipping into Rupert Ross's book: Indigenous Healing: Exploring Traditional Paths. Ross is a retired assistant Crown Attorney for the District of Kenora, Ontario. It's the best book she's read for non-indigenous people to gain understanding into the Indigenous world view and experience.  A very helpful book.  She has a few copies to lend out to anyone interested. She will deliver. Contact:  moirkm57@yahoo.ca

Amanda had a great week. On her day off went to the Van Gogh exhibit and lunch out.

Debbie T. had a school board meeting last night and the district is currently $7 million short on their budget. Has organized an anti racism group with a consultant to introduce a program into the schools. District is bracing for the next wave of Covid infections.

Danny has been busy with on line seminars to renew his license so he can volunteer to administer injections. Sadly while jogging in New Westminster he suffered a racial slur and told that he go home to China. Told abusers he was from the Philippines.

Deb M. went with daughter Samia to Vernon to visit with Dad. They have found a condo for Samia.

Garth did not notice Bill flashing neon this week and was sad about Dave Hamilton.

Melinda wished the Jaffes a Happy Passover and invited everyone to the protein store in Seafair.

Carolyn is good waiting for the vaccine and is sorry for the racism.

Bobby's wife had a birthday and has started the garden. Is still shedding pounds but not yet Kal's 113 of them.

Dick advises everyone to remain patient for their shots that the workers at the vaccination site are doing a great job.

Chris P. entertained us with a sick covid joke. She will be getting a double magnolia tattoo from a tattoo artist who is raising funds to end Asian hate. The tattoo will be about two hand lengths and there is a promise to display it to the club.

I won the $50 million lottery. But better news yet, Sandy is scheduled for her vaccination on April 12th! Yippeee!

Brian went to his happy place camping at Cultus with the family for 10 days. No rain and a great bonfire.

Gordon is disgusted with the hate and abuse. Was vaccinated on the weekend. There was a moving celebration for Dave Hamilton which included the RI president and others from outside District 5040. Gordon is going to celebrate National Tartan Day next week. We are hoping it does not include a kilt. If so we are hoping there are no pictures.

Chris B.'s 11 year old granddaughter was exposed to Covid and is in isolation for two weeks. Fortunately she tested negative. School in Alberta is going virtual again and 10 year old grand son had a zoom birthday.

Ron had his septic tank pumped. Traces of unusual drugs found. Does the same septic tank service a certain "Man Cave"? Perhaps! Ron got in his 9,000 steps and saw that his hero William Shatner is making a movie at 90! Ron is auditioning as an extra and is hoping for a role as a senior Klingon. At least so says Lady Whistledown!

Joyce is happy to see the anti racism efforts and the community anger is very troubling.

Chris M. reported that Gordon and her son have the same birthday. But I do not think is was the same year. Had a bad weather birthday picnic. We were introduced to Max La Mouton the mask wearing lamb to encourage the elementary school students to wear a mask. Chris is working hard to keep things together at school.

Judy had a quiet week. One year since grandson's first drive by birthday. He had a cold from day care and it has spread through family. So even though not covid still isolation. Will have an Easter Celebration and a toast for Ralph's Birthday.

Susan actually was in her car on her way to Costco with no traffic when she checked in. She is finding the developing hatred disgusting and gets through all of this by focusing on the good little things and events that occur daily.

Elena is getting her vaccine in a couple weeks and her sister has been vaccinated. She is also impressed by the vaccine operation at River Rock. There were 65 guests at the trade conference. She was reminded of the Kaleidoscope project our club put on a number of years ago with 33 different countries participating.

Peter was vaccinated on Wednesday and confirmed it was well organized. He reminded us of old racist terms and saw how his children and grandchildren see people and not races and sees hope for the future.

Kathy had big hugs for Danny. She can now see her daughter and partner as they are out of isolation.

Marg is currently participating in her favourite past time Grant Application Writing. Sadly had a friend pass away from a fall and donated organs for four people. If you have not done so please indicate you will donate your organs. Don took a phone call from a bogus caller and asked for her number for contact tracing purposes. Caller called Don a bad name and hung up. Knowing Don I wonder how often that happens? You know we love him!

Sandra had a tough week as the fellow who died was Kyle's best friends father. Family is devastated. There will be a drive by funeral. On top of that Brian's birthday celebration get away will be put on hold once again.

Kal lost 113 lbs. and does not wonder why there would be a green house in a garage. Anybody check the hydro bill??

Dalbir in absentia: I wanted to express my sadness on the loss of Dave Hamilton. I was blessed that I knew Dave for so many years and that I was able to “spend time” with him during the MBBI, Rotary and Nisga’a peace training that he spear headed. As said by our other Rotarians Dave was always at our Gala and supported us fully and he was always happy and he made the evening more enjoyable.
We in Rotary and in the community at large have a lost a kind and supporting soul.

Sam showered at 6:58, made coffee and then had an "aha" moment - Rotary. Has made a pilgrimage to New Westminster where he is colonizing the indigenous population and imposing his values on them. We know they are good ones Sam I am!

Bill wished a Happy Easter and Baseball season to those who celebrate them. He is now on the District Youth Committee. Without Dave Hamilton the world is slightly worse off.

Pat was getting her vaccine on Friday and did a wonderful job chairing our Thursday morning meeting.

What are the origins of April Fool's Day? Let's GTS.

A disputed association between April 1 and foolishness is in Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales(1392). In the"Nun's Priest's Tale", a vain cock Chauntecleer is tricked by a fox on Syn March bigan thritty dayes and two. Readers apparently understood this line to mean "32 March", i.e. April 1. However, it is not clear that Chaucer was referencing April 1, since the text of the "Nun's Priest's Tale" also states that the story takes place on the day when the sun is in the signe of Taurus had y-runne Twenty degrees and one, which cannot be April 1. Modern scholars believe that there is a copying error in the extant manuscripts and that Chaucer actually wrote, Syn March was gonIf so, the passage would have originally meant 32 days after March, i.e. 2 May, the anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II to Anne of Bohemia, which took place in 1381.

In 1508, French poet Eloy d'Amerval referred to a poisson d'avril (April fool, literally "April's fish"), possibly the first reference to the celebration in France. Some writers suggest that April Fools' originated because in the Middle Ages, New Year's Day was celebrated on March 25 in most European towns, with a holiday that in some areas of France, specifically, ended on April 1, and those who celebrated New Year's Eve on January 1 made fun of those who celebrated on other dates by the invention of April Fools' Day. The use of January 1 as New Year's Day became common in France only in the mid-16th century, and the date was not adopted officially until 1564, by the Edict of Roussillon.

In 1561, Flemish poet Eduard de Dene wrote of a nobleman who sent his servants on foolish errands on April 1.

In the Netherlands, the origin of April Fools' Day is often attributed to the Dutch victory in 1572 at Brielle, where the Spanish Duke Álvarez de Toledo was defeated. Op 1 april verloor Alva zijn bril is a Dutch proverb, which can be translated as: "On the first of April, Alva lost his glasses." In this case, "bril" ("glasses" in Dutch) serves as a homonym for Brielle. This theory, however, provides no explanation for the international celebration of April Fools' Day.

In 1686, John Aubrey referred to the celebration as "Fooles holy day", the first British reference. On April 1, 1698, several people were tricked into going to the Tower of London to "see the Lions washed".

Although no Biblical scholar or historian is known to have mentioned a relationship, some have expressed the belief that the origins of April Fool's Day may go back to the Genesis flood narrative. In a 1908 edition of the Harper's Weekly, cartoonist Bertha R. McDonald wrote:

Authorities gravely date it to the time of Noah and the ark. The London Public Advertiser of March 13, 1769, printed: "The mistake of Noah sending the dove out of the ark before the water had abated, on the first day of April, and to perpetuate the memory of this deliverance it was thought proper, whoever forgot so remarkable a circumstance, to punish them by sending them upon some sleeveless errand similar to that ineffectual message upon which the bird was sent by the patriarch".

Or maybe:

One likely predecessor to the origin of April Fools’ day is the Roman tradition of Hilaria, a spring festival held around March 25 in honor of the first day of the year longer than the night (we call this the vernal equinox, which typically falls on March 20). Festivities included games, processions, and masquerades, during which disguised commoners could imitate nobility to devious ends.
