Last weeks meeting
Repeat from last week: All meetings in July will be held in person at the Riverside Banquet Hall Ballroom at 14431 Knox Way at 7:00 AM. Members may also attend by Zoom. Outgoing Board was thanked.
Presidents Report
This was President Debbie's first meeting and there was no insurrection. All went well for the first meeting with attendance by zoom and in person. Debbie announced that Joyce was handing around a sign up sheet for Sgt at Arms and inspirational quote. Please sign up when you next attend in person.
Thanks to the Ghirra's for providing the venue and the continental breakfast this week.

Sergeant At Arms Tidbits
Susan and family sang the National Anthem in both official languages for Canada Day.
Gordon finally had an adjustment and seemed happier and more adjusted. He attended at the Steveston Club and inducted their new board. It is officially a hybrid club now where members can attend in person or on Uber. You do not have to own a hybrid car to join but you do have to take Uber to the meetings.
Dalbir has bought a new pick up truck in anticipation of retirement in a year. He is going to haul dirt until then. Off on a road trip with Kal. Although he did not say which "Kal". Who would you chose?
Both Dalbir and Gordon commented on the quiet Canada Day in Steveston this year. Not a soul for the Festival and BBQ.
Garth had some old friends for lunch for Canada Day, perhaps older then him. Perhaps not!
Joyce played a game with her nephews which drew a laugh(editor missed the description). The 11 year old now towers over her.
Debbie M. confirms the real estate market is picking up again. It is good to be busy.
Larry went jogging on the sea wall to get away from cranky pants.
Judy reported that Spencer turned 40. Yikes!!! Although care homes are opening up she wishes the process would go a lot faster so she could see Ralph.
Marg's hip replacement is scheduled this July(could not catch the date). lots of cheering. Marg spent Canada Day first wrapped in a blanket and then in a warm bath. She did not say if Don joined her.
Peter has bought a log cabin near Princeton. Daniel Boone is a neighbour and Abe Lincoln was born a little further down the crick.
Michael announced they held their first event for 50 people, a pre wedding ceremony where social distancing worked for every part of it until the family photo at the end. Michaels business group is presenting to Bonnie Henry in hopes of allowing gatherings larger than 50. Maybe in time for a mini gala in the fall. We certainly hope so.
Debbie S. celebrated Father's day as her dad had been diagnosed with a blood clot and a tumor from a colonoscopy. He has no symptoms. Once the blood clot is gone the Dr. can remove the tumor. Thank goodness no need for the pine box.

Marg Dixon spoke to us about the literacy projects she helped create as a result of money from an Olympic legacy fund used throughout the province. She outlined many literacy projects. The first was a family literacy project where children parents and even grandparents attend where they all read together. So not only do the children learn literacy skills but the caregivers do as well. Marg gave an example of one child who at the beginning did nothing but scream but by the end did not want to leave the sessions. Many of the participants did not want the 8 weeks to end. Marg described the refugee literacy program where a family from Syria could not believe this kind of service would be available. Also Chinese grand parents wanted to learn English so they could communicate with their English speaking grand children. We were told about the Financial Literacy Program - Budgeting, the Physical Literacy Program - Educational Walks, Gardening Literacy Program, Senior Literacy Program and a Poverty Literacy program. Who would have guessed at being so illiterate about Literacy Programs.
Marg also talked about the provision of books and a children's area at the Food Bank to keep them occupied while the parents are collecting what they need. She also mentioned the literacy program to develop writing skills at WorkSafe for injured employees who needed those skills to return to work in a job that had those requirements.
Lastly she mentioned health literacy. This involved both knowledge of medications but also drug addiction literacy. She read two moving poems about finally being free and my perfect world. Literacy allowed the two poets to express themselves and they are both still alive having faced down suicidal urges.
Pat thanked Marg for continuing to be an inspirational educator and that our club is lucky enough to have her as a member.

Committee (and other) Updates
Fundraising Committee has come up with the idea of a Mini Auction Gala and the idea is being explored. Will have a meeting on July 16th during our morning meeting so bring your ideas.
There will be a projects meeting after next weeks Thursday Breakfast meeting, July 9th 2020.

A child asks her father where we came from. He said, "Well Adam and Eve had children and they had children and so on until now" The child went and asked her mother.
