Winnifreda L. Manyanga a Lawyer with Inherit Your Rights in Arusha Tanzania is an advocate in the high court in Tanzania and dedicates herself to gender equality. She is a voice for women's rights in Tanzania in regards to inheritance, property rights and human rights. The goal is to fight injustice through training women in groups and schools and they also broadcast on radio and TV. Some courts do not allow lawyers so women are trained to represent themselves. Legal aid is provided free for women and children. The organizations provides gender equality training and health training for women, men and children. One of the big issues is that through custom when the husband dies the property passes to the son and not the wife. Many do not know that the law protects them and wives are actually entitled to the inheritance. Wives also will accept the violence in the home because they are afraid to lose everything. In 2020 they trained 3,000 people, 30 community advisors and took 37 cases to court. Educating women is not enough as men need to be trained too and learning about human rights will improve the lives of the whole family. They have trained many community leaders who provide safe houses for women in small rural villages. In these areas women are often reluctant to go to the police. The organization provides 8 weeks of training regarding land rights, inheritance, human rights and children's rights. After 6 months they return for a refresher course and to assess how well the program is working. They also will provide free legal advice to draft wills. The training is to make both men and women understand gender violence and it is not just up to the Government to protect human rights. The training occurs at ground level to protect human rights. This will strengthen the economy, create sustainable communities and transform society. For better detail you can review the presentation sent by Kathy yesterday.

Meanderings

The oldest known wild bird in the world is a female Laysan albatross named Wisdom that was banded in 1956. It was last seen on Midway Atoll incubating an egg. Banding of birds was started by Paul Bartsch of the Smithsonian Institute in 1902 when he banded 23 black crowned night herons. Only one was found 55 miles from where it was banded. Since then there have been 77 million banded birds with 5 million records of encounters. The banding of birds has not only helped with our knowledge of their habits but also assisted with saving species and their habitats. The known record for long distance travel is a South Polar skua that was banded in Antarctica in January 1975 and shot in Greenland in July 1975 - a distance of 8,929 miles. (Scientific American)

Human migration is also increasing as a result of war, famine, and a search for opportunities. In the past two decades women have increasingly been travelling independent of other family members usually for education or work. In destination countries, women migrants' participation in the work force exceeds that of non-migrant woman by 15 percent. Travelling compounds the risk of exploitation and gender based violence. There are 26.4 million migrant women in the U.S. (National Geographic).

I often get asked how my wife and I have remained married for over 40 years. We go out twice a week for a nice dinner and a glass of wine. She goes out Tuesday and I go Friday.

Here’s the problem, there doesn’t seem to be a limit to the number of times you can make the same mistake twice.

In Honour of St. Patrick's Day:

Why did the leprechaun go outside? To sit on his paddy-o.

Why shouldn’t you iron a four-leaf clover? You might press your luck!
