Danny Salcedo:
The 2025 Caring Hearts Dental Mission served inhabitants from the mountainous area of Capas Tarlac, in the NE Philippines, about 100 km from Manila.  In 1942 Japanese invaded the Philippines, only 100 km away from Capas Tarlac.  Danny’s family fought side by side with the Americans, escaped from the Japanese occupation, who took thousands of prisoners of war.  Prisoners had to walk from Bataan to Capas Tarlac, but when the soldiers couldn’t walk anymore, they were shot or bayonetted by the Japanese.  Over 40 000 dead altogether.  In 1945 the Americans came back to liberate the Philippines, and made it their base, the largest outside of America.  In 1991 Mount Pinatubo erupted, and covered the American bases, and the Americans left.  In the Aeta community in the mountain areas, 47,000 families are living, mostly not helped by governments.  Last Feb 9-14 Caring Heats in cooperation with the Philippine air force, did a humanitarian mission, loading dental supplies and machines into trucks and bus, to the unloading at Papas Tarlac. Filipino soldiers helped and provided security. The dental clinic was set up, with stations and sections, providing screening and registration and vital signs collection.   Chairs, machines, a pharmacy and relaxing stations were set up, providing hygiene and scaling, oral surgery, tooth extraction, cosmetic and restorative surgery, medication, antibiotics and vitamins. The giveaways section supplied toys for children after their surgeries, hygiene kits and food.  His daughter helped treat patients.  Thousands of patients started to line up at 5 a.m., and the team worked from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and later, Danny shared anecdotal stories of a boy who was bullied because he couldn’t smile, and after having his teeth restored, was given a mirror and he started to cry.  One woman was a breast cancer patient who had teeth restored and said she could die anytime because she was now able to smile.  The 36-member team of Caring Hearts, and 40 volunteers participated in the exhausting yet gratifying dental mission for 2025.  The daily output chart showed a total of 2,499 patients, 784 surgeries, 702 cleaning, 1013 cosmetic, costing millions of dollars all together.   But the hope in the eyes of the children and the life-changing restoration for them, allow them to believe in the potential of their dreams. And the team is reward with a feeling of peace and profound happiness after the mission.   Richmond Sunrise Rotary is one of the founding partners, thanks to the connection with Elena Agala and we are proud to be a small part of this extraordinary mission.  Thank you, Danny, for all you do.

In case you missed it.

World Aquatic Animal Day

April 3, 2025
Since 2020, every April 3rd has been celebrated as World Aquatic Animal Day–a day that highlights the importance of aquatic life and the numerous threats these animals face. Aquatic animals not only from the ocean, but also from rivers and lakes are celebrated and recognized for their essential roles in the planet’s health.
These creatures ranging from fish, mammals, invertebrates, etc. all play an important role in maintaining the marine food web and ecosystems. Furthermore, they are also vital for ecosystem health, support biodiversity, and hold cultural and social significance to local communities.
However, aquatic animals are increasingly at risk due to human activities, such as overfishing, pollution, and the destruction of their natural habitats. This day serves as a reminder of the urgent need to protect these animals and their environments. Climate change, ocean acidification, and plastic pollution are among the many challenges they face. One hundred million marine animals die each year from plastic waste alone.
Well, you may wonder, what can I do? Individuals and communities can take action in the protection of these animals by reducing plastic waste, supporting sustainable fisheries, and volunteering!
At the Coastal Corridor Alliance, we recognize the critical role ecosystems play in sustaining aquatic life, and we’re dedicated to preserving these vital coastal habitats. Each month, on the 4th Saturday, we host a beach cleanup event: an opportunity for you to actively contribute to protecting both aquatic animals and their environments.
By working together, we can help ensure that these species thrive for generations to come, while also safeguarding the health of the planet for future generations. Register for the Beach Cleanup!
