Gloria expressed her gratitude to Dave Hamilton for his efforts in establishing the Peace Conversations and all the contributors and supporters. The goal is to have Rotary Clubs become hubs of Peace Conversations. We were asked to listen to each other without judgment. We are to come to the conversation with open minds, reflection, acceptance, curiosity, discovery, authenticity, generosity, and levity. The approach is to listen, learn, and appreciate differences.
In the break out rooms we were asked to ponder the following questions.
Can polio be eradicated? The consensus was that it can be and we are so close that we should carry on with eradication polio but transition to something that resonates with younger members and potential members who have no experience with polio.
Everyone agreed we should continue to donate to the Foundation because of it's projects, international reach and high profile supporters. However, there was an expressed preference that the balance of projects should tend toward more local as opposed to international.
The Clubs suggestions for new projects were clean water, climate change, malaria, covid 19, or other health project. The club overwhelming thought it should be a project that appeals to younger people.

Meanderings

The Vancouver Sun Run, which occurred this month, has been Canada’s largest 10k road race since its inception in 1985, and is currently the third largest timed 10k in North America. Founded by former Canadian Olympians Dr. Doug and Diane Clement along with Dr. Jack Taunton. The run’s purpose was to promote the benefits of running, to improve health and fitness, as well as support elite amateur athletics. The first run attracted 3,200 participants.

Through the years the run captured the imagination and hearts of individuals wanting to improve their health and wellbeing. The event morphed into the phenomenon it is today with thousands upon thousands descending upon the streets of Vancouver each year in celebration of  Vancouver Sun Run Sunday! The run is supported by its loyal host committee and an army of over 1,500 volunteers.

The Sun Run mission is to be Canada’s leading and most influential 10k race, inspiring healthy, active lifestyles for people of all ages and at any fitness level year-over-year by offering fun and accessible community-based running/walking event and programs in B.C.

There were four Samsons who ran in the race this year but not one of them was our Debbie! Unless she was on a team.

Speaking of Polio Eradication here is an update.

CDC and its international partners have made significant progress toward polio eradication over the past 33 years.

  • The annual number of wild poliovirus cases has declined by more than 99.9% worldwide from an estimated 350,000 in 1988 when the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched.
  • Of the three serotypes of wild poliovirus, type 2 was certified as eradicated in 2015 and type 3 was certified as eradicated in 2018.
  • The last evidence of wild poliovirus type 1 transmission in Nigeria was in September 2018, leaving only two polio-endemic countries (having never interrupted the transmission of indigenous wild poliovirus type 1), which are Afghanistan and Pakistan.
  • Five out of six World Health Organization regions are now certified wild poliovirus free—the African Region, the Americas, Europe, South East Asia and the Western Pacific.
  • Without our polio eradication efforts, more than 18 million people who are currently healthy would have been paralyzed by the virus.
  • Global polio eradication efforts stopped 14 of 29 circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPVs) outbreaks active in 2019. Setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic and polio outbreak response campaign quality must be addressed to regain progress and end every form of polio.
For the latest polio reports, visit the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). It shows the number of cases in most recently affected countries.

TODAYS CHUCKLEs

              🤪

Okay so in honour of the Vancouver Sun Run and our members who are runners or joggers ie. Debbie S., Bill, and others here are some jogging jokes.

Every morning I tell my wife I’m going jogging.  It's a running joke.

For the past three weeks, I've been jogging a mile a day.  Now I don't know where I am.

Jogging in the forest

A man is taking a jog in the forest. He realizes he is lost after a while and soon sees another man jogging in the forest. The first man asks the second man for directions, and the second man says, "Sure! I have a truck we can take into the city."
The first man agrees, thinking that the second man is camping nearby with his truck. The second man then squats a little and looks over at the first man. "Are you getting in?" he asks the first man.
The first man realizes that this guy is crazy, but before he can refuse, the second man waives a gun at him, saying he will harm him if he doesn't "get into the truck."
The second man squats with the first man and they begin running through the forest in a squat. They reach a security cabin in the forest where a police officer is standing outside.
The officer approaches the two men and asks what's going on. The first man immediately tells the officer how he's being forced to ride in "the truck" and that the second man is insane. The officer nods, arrests the second guy, and tells the first man to come with him, and they'll drive into the city.
"We'll take my motorcycle. It has a sidecar you can ride in," the officer tells the first man. The first man agrees.
The police officer squats and looks at the first man. "Get in! You can't stay out here, people just escaped from the psychiatric hospital at the edge of the forest and they'll find you," the officer tells the first man.
The first man squats next to the officer, and they begin to run together.
"Damn," the first man exclaims, squatting and running low to the ground. "I should have stayed in the truck!"
