Debbie S. spoke to us about the Bell "Let's talk day" which occurred on Thursday and since it's inception in 2011 has raised more than $113 million. On Lets  talk day Bell donates five cents to Canadian mental health programs for every applicable text, local or long distance call, tweet or TikTok video using #BellLetsTalk. This year the program raised a record of almost $8 million with almost 160,000,000 social interactions.
Debbie also told us about Coldest Night of the Year virtual community walk. You can join a team, create a team or donate to a team. Contact Joyce and you can join her team. All proceeds going to helping seniors and woman fleeing abuse. The web site is

Volunteer hours should be reported to Sandra Hass at s.hass@shaw.ca at the end of every month. July - December 2020 estimate the best you can. Everything you do for our club outside of breakfast meetings is counted, as are volunteer activities where you are representing Rotary. Non Rotary volunteering is not included.

Next we had Dr. Baby Sam present to us the Rotary Youth Engagement Standards. Chris P. reminded us that we all need criminal record checks whether we are dealing with youth or not. The most important take aways from the presentation are the rule of two - always have a second adult present on the interaction. Second, be professional and third be leaders. Sam has emailed the presentation to us all so please review it once more and if you have questions you can call Chrissie P. The next important take away is that Dr. Sam likes the green balloon best. If you would like to know what motivates Amanda Gorman the National Youth Poet Laureate listen to this:

Okay so who knows the origin of Groundhog day. Following thanks to Mr. Google and To Do Canada. Oh and belatedly Debbie S. who stole my idea.

For an almost uniquely North American celebration, Groundhog Day has its roots in Medieval Europe and the celebration of Candlemas, a festival in which candles were lit at churches to commemorate Jesus’s presentation at the temple. Candlemas also has much in common with pre-existing Pagan observances in Pagan times, when farmers would carry torches around their fields before sowing time. Candlemas falls 40 days after Christmas and in between the winter solstice and spring equinoxes.

In fact, the Christian Candlemas itself was an assimilation of the Roman rite for the goddess Februa with a procession on February 2, to honor her. The Roman calendar, in turn, had Celtic origins. Candlemas concurs with Imbolic, one of the Celtic  'cross-quarter days', the four days which marked the midpoints between solstice and equinox.

The Pennsylvania Dutch were immigrants from Germanic-speaking areas of Europe. The Germans already had a tradition of marking Candlemas (February 2) as "Badger Day" (Dachstag), where if a badger emerging found it to be a sunny day thereby casting a shadow, it foreboded the prolonging of winter by four more weeks.

The first reported news of a Groundhog Day observance was arguably made by the Punxsutawney Spirit newspaper of Punxsutawney in 1886: "up to the time of going to press, the beast has not seen its shadow". However, it was not until the following year in 1887 that the first Groundhog Day considered "official" was commemorated there, with a group making a trip to the Gobbler's Knob part of town to consult the groundhog. People have gathered annually at the spot for the event ever since.

Apparently there is a celebration of Ground Hog Day in the following provinces New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta. Not BC so on February 2, 2021 if it is sunny you won't know what's coming weather wise for the next few weeks.

Most famous Canadian ground hog is Wiarton Willie. Remember that in the movie Ground Hog Day, life gives Bill Murray the chance to become a better person and that the day finally ends with a happy ending!!!!🎆

TODAYS CHUCKLEs

Believe it or not this also came up when I googled banker jokes.

The IRS came to this mans house one day and told him to come in the next morning to talk about all the money that's been coming in and out of his bank account. So the man thought maybe I need to get a lawyer. So he and his lawyer get to the IRS’s office and sit down and the agent said there has been a large amount of money flowing in and out of your account and we wanted to know if you knew anything about it. The man says yes I do, I’m a gambler. The agent says you gamble with that much money. He man says yes, I’ll give you an example. Alright I bet you $5,000 that I can bite my left eye. Agent says alright deal. The man takes out his fake eye and bites it. Then the agents says that not fair. The man says I’ll let you get your money back or even more, I bet you $7,500 I can bite my right eye. He agents thinking I didn’t see him come in with a guide dog or a stick so the agent says deal. The man takes out his false teeth and bites his right eye. The agent then says that’s not fair. The man replies alright I have another one, your down $12,500 I’ll bet you $15,000 if you put that waste basket on the other side of the room I can stand by your desk and piss across the room into the waste basket and not get a drop anywhere. The agent says that’s impossible you’ve got a deal. The man starts peeing and pees all over his desk and the agent says I got you, he’s laughing and happy that he final beat him, but then the lawyer has his hand on his face and the agent asked what’s wrong with you and the lawyer replies the man bet me $100,000 he could piss on your desk and you’d just love it.
