The external Paul Harris Dinner is now scheduled for June 15th and tickets will be $75 each.

The Foundation Dinner is cancelled but any donation will be matched for Paul Harris points.

Sadly Debbie S.'s Mother has passed away. The whole of the Club is sorry for Debbie's loss.

February 12th is the membership conference and Mary Lou and Debbie M. will attend.

There is no social committee meeting today. So you did not miss anything.

Peter announced that the Hanging Basket Sale will be going on line again from March 8th to 26th. Sam will be our techie and preparing a brochure. So if you have any photos of the baskets send them to Sam for consideration for the brochure.

Garth, irresponsibly, is playing golf today for the first time since October on his usual Thursday.

Joyce is ready to retire from retirement because it is nuts out there. No Kidding!

Susan's physio(for her gradual return to work) partner has had a baby so she, Susan that is, was able to join us today. Nice! Was a little late joining us as she was signing up for the coldest night of the year.

Judy had a nice week in Palm Springs with brother and will be having an early Valentine's dinner with the whole family for the first time since Christmas. Spencer and family have recovered from Covid.

Mary Lou completed 20,000 steps Sunday as Oscar's family had covid but Oscar at least got to go for a walk. Has been enjoying the stoner's sport of snow boarding and learning a new vocabulary at the same time. "Goofy" huh?

Christine M. completed 37,793 steps which included the dance steps from her dance class. Her secretaries daughter is on the Chinese Olympic Hockey team as Lin O. Eleven of the players are Chinese and the rest are imports.

Sam had 5 bananas since we last heard from him 5 paragraphs ago. Justin has had brain fog since covid but since getting his booster doing a lot better.

Ron wanted to keep listening to Unchained Melody but instead told us about reading Shatner's book about being 84. Shatner is now 91 and Ron is looking forward the Captain Kirk's next book and turning 91 - when the time comes.

Elena was happy with her 15,000 steps and impressed with Christine's 30,000+ steps. Went out for dinner and celebrated 50 years in Canada. Attended a DEI conference for 2 hours with some very interesting discussion.

Peter bought a beautiful but expensive orchard for Jane for Valentine's Day. Business had its best year ever as covid kept people at home so they spent more on gardens and plants.

I am baby sitting the four year old twins today and I will be going through the magic door which will be opened by Dottie the dinosaur. Sandy obeys her new fitbit when it says 117 more steps at 10 to the hour.

Amanda is excited about the Super Bowl and in particular the half time show.

Larry is checking into the River Rock for Valentines. Steve is glued to the Olympics day and night. Larry enjoyed watching the skaters and thought as a kid he would like to have been a figure skater. Unfortunately, you had to be able to skate.

Sandra when she was a new Rotarian, remembers Bill running with the Torch and being able to touch it. Watched snow cross until midnight and wonders how they train.(Eds note, I saw a program once that they do some of their training into a swimming pool).

Dalbir expressed his sorrow for Debbie S. and family. Followed that up by saying how dismal the hockey game was Wednesday night.

Dick watches Barb watching the Olympics. Also interested in watching two experiments. The first is the lifting of mandates in Alberta (and Saskatchewan) and the gradual lifting of restrictions in BC. The second is observing our new democracy in action where protesters can tie up our country without consequences.

Kal is disgusted with NFL collusion against Black coaches. Says WKRP Cincinnati for Super Bowl Champs. I say bet Rams.

Debbie T. says she and Drew are going to "Black Something" in Ucluelet for their Anniversary. Drew organized it so kidney stones are not invited but the dogs are. Will be signing up for Coldest Night of the Year and finding a place post walk for coffee or a pub!!!! Like Duh!🍻

Pats eyes are good with no glaucoma and the cataracts are not ready for surgery yet. She was out for dinner with friends. Unfortunately her car was rear ended. She is alright. Was turning when a pedestrian stepped out so she stopped and the car behind was following too close. Now has to attend all the inconvenient appointments.

Marg was reminded that while at university they all used to bang the pipes in the building when "You've Lost that Lovin Feelin" was played.

Sam told us about the Rotary Student Exchange Program with Bill and Dalbir in supporting roles. We have had 12 exchange students over the years from various countries including Argentina, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden and Belgium. For a few reasons we have not hosted a student for 10 years. There were no exchanges during covid. The incoming students will be required to go to RYLA, a tour of BC, and the District Conference. Bill told us about the close relationship he and his family had developed with My. Bill and Shelly had gone to her wedding in Sweden. Bill and Gordon were the emergency contacts for students stranded at the airport. One Australian student stayed at Bill's for one night and the student is still in contact regularly with Shelly. Dalbir told us about Lucas who stayed with them and kept in touch. Lucas is now a Doctor with two kids and they have been embraced like family. Additionally the students are great ambassadors for peace. Sam told us of a German student who had become a very good friend of Sam's who came to his wedding and Jake and Sam went to her wedding. Julia Ruus was our virtual exchange student from Brazil. Last October their were 8 out and inbound virtual students who had 90 minute virtual meetings for 8 weeks on different topics. Many of the students are still in contact with each other.

Our outgoing exchange student is Tylor Choy who has taken extra courses so he will graduate with his cohorts in high school. Mystery Person is the incoming student. We then all discussed ways to make a successful exchange which includes criminal record checks for those in your household. Ideas include, family dinners, cabin trips, whistler, skiing, hiking weddings, jogging, family events, arts and culture, picnics and camping. The important point is that we all should try to be involved and be creative. The challenge will be finding host families because there will need to be 4 hosting for three months each and one back up. If you have an invitation for the student it is to go through Sam. There are new contacts for getting your criminal record checks.

Black history in Canada

Black Canadians and their communities have been a part of shaping Canada’s heritage and identity since the arrival of Mathieu Da Costa, a navigator, and interpreter, whose presence in Canada dates back to the early 1600s.

The role of Black Canadians and their communities in Canada has largely been ignored as a key part of Canada’s history. There is little mention that some of the Loyalists who came here after the American Revolution and settled in the Maritimes were people of African descent, nor the fact that many soldiers of African descent made many sacrifices in wartime as far back as the War of 1812.

Few people in Canada are aware of the fact that African people were once enslaved in the territory that is now known as Canada, or of how those who fought enslavement helped to lay the foundation of Canada’s diverse and inclusive society.

Black History Month is a time to learn more about these Canadian stories and the many other important contributions that Black Canadians and their communities have made to the history and continued growth of this country.

Recognizing Black History Month in Canada

The commemoration of Black History Month in North America dates back to 1926, when Harvard-educated African American historian Carter G. Woodson proposed setting aside a time devoted to honour the accomplishments of African Americans and to heighten awareness of Black history in the United States. This led to the establishment of Negro History Week in 1926. Celebrations of Black history began in Canada shortly thereafter. During the early 1970s, the week became known as Black History Week. It was expanded into Black History Month in 1976.

In December 1995, the House of Commons officially recognized February as Black History Month in Canada following a motion introduced by the first African Canadian woman elected to Parliament, the Honourable Jean Augustine. The House of Commons carried the motion unanimously.

In February 2008, Senator Donald Oliver, the first Black man appointed to the Senate, introduced the Motion to Recognize Contributions of Black Canadians and February as Black History Month. It received unanimous approval and was adopted on March 4, 2008. The adoption of this motion completed Canada’s parliamentary position on Black History Month.

A friend of mine has two tickets for the 2022 Super Bowl, both box seats. He paid $2,500 each but he didn't realize last year when he bought them, it was going to be on the same day as his wedding.
