September 30th Federal Statutory Holiday, the first National Reconciliation Day.
World Polio Day is October 24th.
There were seven members at the walk for water.
The District is still looking for District Governor and nominations close Oct 10.

sergeant At Arms Tidbits
Mary Lou is ready to vote. Had a crazy week but the highlight is Oscar starting soccer with a cute uniform. Travelling to Cortez island next week to spend quality time at Hollyhock.
Christine M. did plan to be with us in person but it was the first time puppy slept in until 6.😴 So did she apparently. If you are looking for photos of the walk for water she has posted some on our web site and face book.
Ron busy at work filling vacancies and rental rates are reasonable. The students are returning. The date to pick apples is Saturday Oct 2nd and Ron will be serving a flight of prosecco. For food bank and personal use the apples I mean. King John apples to be picked. Or did he say Kings and Jonathans?
Debbie S. found it enlightening to carry a jug filled almost full and weighed almost 50 lbs. She had to dump out out half. Not an easy life day after day. However bonus 🥳 staying at Ghirra’s in Whistler for the weekend.
Carolyn also found the water jugs very heavy. Quite busy chasing cheating and plagiarism at Kwantlen and looking at the creative ways people do it.
Joyce back from California and chased out of some places by the smoke but really enjoyed the family visit. Had fun chasing the 3 and 6 year old grandchildren. Anger in the US is palpable from the fire and covid. Just ask Governor Newsome.
Debbie T. will coordinate the apple picking with Debbie S. and Ron. Son will be married this on Sunday so full steam ahead at UBC Cecil Green. Hoping for sunshine. Don't go to Walter Gage towers though - unless you have vodka in your water melon!🍉
Dick is awake and enjoyed daughter and grandson visits. Barb’s nephew diagnosed with Covid even though double vaxxed. Yikes and for more on that story ...
Bob had 7 cousins attend weddings and even though vaccinated they all contracted covid. The phrase "lawyer up" has now been replaced with "mask up"! Had a nice dinner at salmon house with Rotarians. Bob will also help pick apples.
Susan slipped and tripped at Costco and injured arm and so on limited duties answering phones today. Nothing broken but not driving. Super excited that son Ryan’s a life guard.
Sandra says protests at the hospital effected staff morale and after the protest there was a heart flower arch for the staff as they arrived and greatly improved the mood. Next week she will attend in person - not the protests, our meeting.
Bobby last week watched tennis and Michael’s wife has joined Riverside staff. Daughter is turning 25 on the 17th or was it 17 on the 25th ❓Went to Tiffany’s to buy a gift and salesperson started with a $15,000 item and after lengthy negotiations Bobby bought something for around $500. Rumours swirled that it was the back of an earring.
I am off to Hawaii and as a result of the comments about losing weight I will be looking to buy a speedo while on Maui. Will send pictures. 🩲 Also went for the snot swab on Thursday and tested negative - Aloha. 🍍
Marg learned something about composting and coffee grounds. Do not put them down the garburator unless you want it to seize up so your sink and dishwasher back up and your kitchen floods. Don and tools turned some joint around and fixed the problem.
Judy had lunch at Van Dusen this week and had family of 19 for dinner - 10 children and 9 adults. Now adults are out numbered. Way more fun or at least noisier.
Sam youth committee chair morphing into Chris P. with pictures of Maine Island and thinking of Don. Sam needs help. No not counselling(well maybe) but he meant with the youth committee and someone to liase with Rotoract Club. His trip last week was fun and he did all the cooking but no dishes. May be the cook for our Christmas Social.
Kal was at the dinner at Salmon House and asked for a cup of coffee for the limo driver. Salmon House staff not helpful, refused to bring him a cup of coffee but put it into a small plastic container. Customer service anyone.
Bill was in Toronto and restrictions are back to the way BC was in March. Masks and Blue Jay fever everywhere but no Blue Jays bling in Kal’s size.
Danny was stuck in traffic on Alex Fraser Bridge so was late even though he left home at 5:45. I assume AM? Went with the dental team to Nanaimo and Ladysmith and hiked around the rocks on Elliot beach for an hour.
Larry is busy with families now having services that were postponed because of covid. Company now wearing orange ties for a month. Not for Halloween.
Mark moved to Nelson and will be here one week a month. Black bears and deer visit. Daughter attending Mark's old high school. Mark was ahead of zoom time as did not wear pants for school picture. Covid is hot spot in Nelson antivaxxers and conspiracy with Qanon. Mark also busy at work and has been busy through covid.
Elena had a good weekend with Danny and his wife as fitness and dance instructors in a beautiful house. Singing contest on the weekend and planning the next dental mission if allowed. Good to be out.
Micheal's older kids are back in school. Banquet hall is dealing with new rules with security guard to check vaccination status but everyone is ready with phones and no confrontation. No issues with vax status. Unsolved on Netflix has Micheal back into gang warfare.
Gordon keeps the singing standard up. Provided advice for carrying jerry cans of water. After everyone left a 6 year old asked to help and could hardly carry an empty jerry can. He saw the boy filling up the jerry can with a paper cup at the beach. Passersby were donating to the cause.
Melinda - was preoccupied but announced a projects meeting after next weeks meeting.
Pat brought up the news coverage showing that unvaccinated on the respirators. Walk for water was fun thanks to Ron for apples and pears. Zoom board meeting next Monday. Vote before you come. News cast of results in the back ground. Went out for dinner at Catch with golf group and daughter turning 50 but Pat is still young.

In many parts of the world water access is more complicated then the turn of a tap. Getting water and getting it home is a chore. Only the woman now fetch the water. The Water Hippo Project started 5 years ago. Luke thought it was going to be a one time project using $5,000. It is a simple solution and it is a gender issue. Water collection is considered woman’s work.
Girls start young to carry water and it is estimated that 750 million woman carry 40lbs water at a time and is a colossal waste of energy. Water can be collected in the hippo water roller and it carries 5 times the water. So the rollers are not just labor saving but time saving. The roller gives girls more time for school and woman more time be otherwise involved in the community. Two issues brought the point to Luke. If it was the man's job would you want a hippo roller, yes and if a man’s job there would be one in every yard. When the project first started it was all about water and helping woman. Now Luke believes the project is tapping into something larger that impacts over a billion woman and girls on earth.
The Hippo roller was developed in south Africa in 1991 only 80,000 manufactured in total. Distribution of the rollers manufactured in North America is handled by six rotary clubs in south Africa'. 200 rollers had just been delivered when covid shut it down. However this opened a new fundraising avenue because they can spend their time talking to clubs all over the world because of zoom. Recently 140 rollers have been sent from another district and the hope is for another 50 – 60 rollers from our district for the next distribution. The rollers are now sent with shovels seed and fertilizer and a local club trains the women to use them to start local gardens. Not only does the roller bring more water to create more time but also water that can be used for irrigation to increase the size of the gardens. The use of the rollers creates a cycle of demand that is currently not being filled. The expanded gardens increases productivity and generates income by allowing surplus produce to be sold at local markets and returning dignity to the local population. 125 Rotary clubs are now participating in the project and it continues to grow.
The social agencies choose who gets the rollers and charge the equivalent of $10. There is a waiting list. The cost to donate is $150 plus shipping. A Rotary Club in Winnipeg is adding the seeds and tools and more south African clubs on board. South African clubs handle the local expense. Luke wants to get the word out and hopefully ramp up production and delivery.

I want to make it mean something to you. That you are in the cosmos. That you are of the cosmos. That you are born from stardust and to stardust you will return. That you are a way for the universe to be in awe of itself.

In my history class this year I learned that in the late 19th century the first Urban Planning conference was held that brought planners together from all over the world to deal with the environmental problem of horse manure. All trade and all transportation occurred by horse and not only was horse shit piling up in the streets but dead and wounded horses would often be left where they lay. Anyway the London Times predicted that by 1950 London would be buried under 9 feet of horse manure. Another prediction was that New York would have horse manure piled up to the third stories of all the office buildings. The automobile and the internal combustion engine were considered to be the saviours of the environment. Who would have guessed.

I told my suitcase there would be no travelling this year. Now I am dealing with emotional baggage.

Everyone talks about having an inner child. I have an inner older lady who says inappropriate things judges people and has to be in bed by 9 PM.
